Lowering his head slightly, averting his face just a little so Minerva couldn't see, Sterling smiled, trying not to laugh when she kicked the ground in frustration, showing her age somewhat despite her trying to act all grown up. Lifting his head after a second, Sterling met her rather impassioned gaze.

“I don’t see you as hating the world,” Sterling remarked as his warm blue stare moved to her amazing artwork once more and then back to her as he smiled, “Much the opposite. I think you want to bring beauty to it,” he told her very truthfully, admiring that she was seemed so passionate about what she believed in.

“And you are right. The world is full of selfish people who only care for themselves. It has always been that way, and will always be that way, unfortunately. Envy is, I’m afraid, a very powerful emotion.” He said with a somewhat resigned sigh. Envy was worse than hate in his mind. Hate was often related to fear and you could assuage a fear, but you could rarely calm someone’s envy to the point that it completely disappears… it was an emotion that once embedded was hard to remove or change.

“Handsome people are assholes?” Sterling remarked in surprise, half shocked by her remark, before he burst out laughing. “I am glad you think so…” he chuckled, “Angels are supposed to be pretty. Be a shame if you thought I was ugly… “he grinned teasingly at her, “Though, I guess, you could say some of us angels are assholes too,” he chuckled, thinking Minerva was a very outspoken, yet interesting and funny person to be around.

Minerva snorted and moved to lean against the wall opposite of the warehouse she'd been working on. "Isn't my job to hate the world?" she said, rolling her lip ring around again. She smiled a little, playfully, "You can't just expose me like this and not expect any repercussions, Sterling."

"It's easy to see all the awful, isn't it? And it's not like it's ever going to go away, you're right about that. It's easy to get stuck on it too--it's what the media does, anyways. No one remembers good news quite like they do the bad news." She tilted her head and eyed the almost-stranger a little. There was that talk again--he spoke as if he were much older than he looked. This time, she got the impression that he'd lived on the earth longer than she could've guessed--and then she got her answer. Sort of.

"You're an angel?" she said, her brows quirking up in curiosity and surprise. She looked him up and down, almost expecting to see something that would make her think 'duh, of course he is'. So far...just the looks. "Do angels have egos? I feel like I'm feeding it somehow," she laughed, making a scrunched-up face back at him for his teasing look. "A lot of handsome people seem to think they can get away with a lot of stuff just because they're good-looking. But I guess now I have to ask...are you one of those asshole angels?"

Sterling grinned at Minerva's reaction - it was too funny, "Angels do, in fact, have egos, big, massive ones actually..." he said with a playful wink. "It's all that blind adoration, people throwing themselves at our feet, saying we are beautiful, so divine. It all just goes to our heads..." he added jokingly.

"No, afraid not, really hate to ruin your generous opinion of all us angels," Sterling replied humorously, "But I am not one of those avenging assholes angels that start holy wars and pass judgment on mortals. I'm just an angel angel now..." he said putting his hands in his front jean pockets as he looked at her, "Although, before I became a simple angel, I was a protector, guardian, angel." he said with a shrug, not sure if she considered that good or bad.

"And you,... are you one of those mean antisocial girl types that passes judgment based on appearances alone?" he asked Minerva innocently but with a small, somewhat, impish grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.

"Ohhh, I see! Those sure do sound like some delinquents," she said with a small grin. "Devoted followers should know that angels are not to be worshipped, but the Creator himself!" Sometimes Minerva wondered if she sounded like a lunatic when she recounted the things she'd been taught about her religion. It was bad back in her hometown, where the atheists and other non-believers seemed to be in majority, but it was worse on an island filled with demons and hundreds of other religions to boot. She hadn't heard a positive word about Christianity from anyone other than an angel themselves.

"Definitely not a crusader, I see, I see," she said as she jokingly mimed taking down notes. At Sterling's admission, her expression changed to small but genuine pleasant surprise. "You were a guardian angel, really? I don't know whether to say I'm surprised or what. What was it like? Did you have to do like a lot of crime-fighting, or did you just go for the silent protector who wards away misfortune? Guardian angels were always kind of a mystery to me."

At his question, she tilted her head this way and that and smirked. "I look like one of those types, don't I? Are we sure you're not the mean antisocial girl here?" She laughed and straightened up again, her blue-grey eyes twinkling mischievously. "I dunno; why don't you find out? But I'll give you a hint--appearances don't matter to me so much as personalities do."

Sterling shrugged, "There's technically more than one divine creator out there. Depends who you ask, who you believe in or what you believe in. Religion and belief are two different things. People believe in angels, gods, demons... so I guess we exist because of those very beliefs - or those very beliefs exist because we do." Sterling said with a wink, he had actually no idea where angels or gods came from, but it was fun to pretend that he did. He just knew he appeared one day with his consciousness and body intact. He had always been exactly as he was.

Smiling at Minerva's questions, "Crime fighting would certainly be cool, and while guardian angels can channel divine powers to save a charge, we normally just guide. We are that voice that guides you through life, keeps you safe - you know that feeling of suddenly being aware of an oncoming car or danger? Normally, that's us..." he said with a smile.

"Well, that's good to know..." Sterling laughed, "I was afraid you thought I was an asshole because I'm good-looking. Obviously, you must think I'm one for different reasons then?" he retorted teasingly.

"I feel like if I said I disagreed about multiple creators, I'd be immediately accosted by several of the gods living on this island, and it wouldn't be pretty. Maintaining a Christian faith gets me enough dirty looks as is," she snorted and shook her head. It was one of the first times in a long time that she'd mentioned to someone that she actually believed in God, because it was true--having mentioned God in front of demons and half-demons and other gods before, she swore she'd nearly been lynched. Someone had even tried to sit her down to explain to her why she was wrong, which she wasn't going to have any of.

"Some people here are just a bunch of hypocrites... 'Don't force your faith on me, wah wah! What, you believe in GOD? That's horrible and you are too!'" She scoffed with a small wrinkle of her nose. She wasn't even entirely sure that Sterling took her seriously, and he was an angel himself!

"Huh...So guardian angels are kind of like a gut feeling, then? I get a lot of those. I've always wondered if I had a guardian angel, and if so...what would they look like? I know they don't normally look like you. Angels are usually pretty...horrific without a glamour. No offense." Just thinking about the amount of eyes they had made her want to shudder. At least Sterling only had two, even if it might've been some sort of illusion.

Minerva laughed as well. "Maybe it was the way you sauntered up and so boldly asked if I made this piece of art," she said with a snicker and a gesture to the blooming moss tree. "Don't you know all the guys these days approach females strictly through text messaging? Then again, it actually makes them more bold: I'd be afraid of what you had in store for me if I gave you that medium."

She pulled out her phone and lightly tossed it in the air. When she caught it, she wiggled it at Sterling in an obvious display. "What do you say?"

"Yeah, unfortunately, there is a lot of that kind thing. Everyone wants to be the top god. And be the one everyone worships, the one true god..." Sterling said with a grimace at that. He felt bad for Minerva to had to have to endure that kind of treatment. The Christian religion was one of the younger and more popular religions, and so it often got picked on by other older gods... It was just petty rivalry in his opinion.

"Oh, you have a guardian angel, no fear there..." Sterling chuckled and smiled as he looked directly past Minerva to a tall female figure behind her. He could still see other angels that much hadn't changed when he stepped down as a guardian. He guessed all angels must be able to see or sense others if they wanted to.

"I sauntered up so boldly? Really?" that actually surprised him, "Well, I apologise then. And I didn't know that about guys today..." he confessed thinking how times had changed, and how impersonal that was. Eyeing the phone when she offered it to him teasingly, Sterling shook his head,

"Nah, keep your phone, who knows what I might text? ... And to be honest, I don't want you to think any worse of me than you already do?!" he replied jokingly.

"No, you didn't actually boldly saunter up; I was joking about that. I wasn't joking about guys these days though--most dudes are too socially awkward nowadays to actually confront the opposite sex, even if it's just to say hi. The internet's kind of like an invisible wall for people to hide behind that way; makes them feel more confident since they don't have to look anyone in the eye."

She glanced behind her as she spoke, just for a split second, as if there was actually going to be something there that Sterling was looking at. Was she supposed to be creeped out at the thought of someone watching her every move, including the embarrassing ones like trying to offer a cute guy her number?

Minerva couldn't help but roll her eyes at Sterling's total cluelessness when she turned back. That was probably on her--she guessed she couldn't expect a guardian angel to be able to pick up on her vague suggestions without being a mind-reader. "Still a bit out of touch these days, aren't you? I'll rephrase and be a little more straightforward, then. I want your number so we can text each other after we leave. I won't be offended if you say no."

It took Sterling a moment or two to really understand what Minerva had just said. He hadn't got her joke at first, or perhaps just hadn't clued into the fact she was being so direct. He had actually thought she was not at all interested in him, at least not in that way.

"I have to admit that, maybe, just maybe, I am a little tiny bit out of touch," Sterling chuckled good-naturedly as he took Minerva's phone and input his number in it, then he handed her his own cell phone so that she could exchange numbers with him.

"It's not every day that an angel meets a very interesting girl, gets called good looking, an asshole and for their number all in the space of less than an hour," he teased.
