The point was, there was a little of everything. Tents had been set up, and they were near a river deep enough to swim in. There was a barbecue and even a table of pancakes. Shay felt that was some inside joke or something, but really, who knew.
It was all pretty open, with games and chairs set up. Blankets on the ground to stargaze (though night had yet to fall) and balls for spots. Kickball was among Shay's favorite of those sports. It was a kids game for sure, but did it ever really grow old? No. No, it did not.

Waiting for her was not just an assault on the senses - it was sensory overload, just a blitzkrieg. The smell of the meat and the prawn on the barbecue, as well as the oh-so-familiar smell of maple syrup with the pancakes. Alongside a barbecue, though? They usually didn't belong anywhere near each other unless it was some island-based meme. She did miss the internet memes, though.
The baked potatoes were an alright starter for the main course from the barbecue, but she definitely wasn't anywhere near full from the potatoes. The games were an alright distraction, but what was the most interesting was that they had actually brought out a portable TV set just because. They had only just finished the last few episodes of Friends, and they were now watching the best episodes from the first few seasons of Game of Thrones. This thing could last for weeks on end, not the one day or so that Sarah had come to assume. Shit, we're going down that road, aren't we?
Sarah had made a beeline for the biggest tent that wasn't reserved for the teachers and other faculty members and immediately marked her spot with her own belongings, stocked full of stuff like towels, swimwear and clean sets of clothes. She had also strategically placed some of her own skincare products in an easily visible corner of the tent so it basically easily screamed 'FOR GIRLS ONLY'.
Looking over at the river and the activity going on in the water Sarah's expression was tinged with wistfulness. She had a particular fondness for frolicking in the water and that day was no exception, but it served her better that she had her fill and some rest first before going in, not on an empty stomach. Some of the boys were out playing kickball, while the rest of the girls were changing into their swimwear. She'd probably come out of the water early, get changed and spend the rest of the time catching up with Game of Thrones. She needed to get her fix. This was shaping up to be quite the good time, though.

Shay rubbed her face. Okay, first thing was first. She had to look for a tent. Naturally, being a child of twelve, Shay was quick to search one of the larger tents out. It was evident a girl had moved in here. That or...
Eroshay looked around, spotting a nearby girl whom she assumed had claimed the tent. "This yours? Mind if I room with you?" While Shay wasn't big on rooming with anyone, she knew she would have to.

Today was a perfect day to have a camp-out. Though the summer sun was beating down on the island, the trees deep within the woods provided enough shaded areas to escape to. A light breeze blew through the leaves as well. Lucia breathed in the fresh, woodsy air of the forest. Ever since she came to the island, she had been waiting for a chance like this to get out and have some fun with the rest of the community, and what better way to do this than at a camp-out?
There was something for everyone here. A variety of lawn games were set up--horseshoes, ladder toss, cornhole. Some of the more athletic types had even started playing some more organized sports games. If traditional outdoor activities didn’t interest you, a television was set up to stream episodes of some human shows. It seemed a bit out of place at a camp-out, but Lucia didn’t read into it. Thankfully, whoever organized the trip also provided food, lots of food. Next to a grill, there was a long table filled with freshly-barbecued meats. Anything you could think of, it was there. Some pancakes even managed to snag a spot on the buffet table.
But Lucia didn’t come for the games or the food (though they were both gladly received), she came for the people. Looking around, she could see a variety of people who she was just itching to meet. She wondered what sort of personalities they had, what they liked or disliked, or why they had decided to come today, among other things. Lucia was definitely going to strike up a conversation with some of these people later...but first, she grabbed a paper plate and piled onto it as many hamburgers and pancakes as it would fit. Then, taking a seat at a nearby picnic table, she dug in.

Nia wasn't new to the island since she had already been around for a year a now but she still felt pretty out of the loop. She hadn't really interacted with anyone yet besides her dorm parent, Makara, and while he was one of her favorite people, he had been encouraging her to make friends her own age. However, she wasn't really sure how to do that.
When the camping trip came up, Nia had been interested. She had read recently read a book about how good being outside and getting sun was for health, and with her migraines getting worse and worse, she was ready try anything. It took about all the courage she had to get herself to sign up but she did it. She just hoped she wouldn't regret it.
Nia wasn't really sure what to do at first. She looked around and felt a bit overwhelmed by everything going on. When she spotted the food though, she felt that would be a good place to start. She grabbed herself a plate (all she got was a pancake and a small salad) and then looked for a place to sit. She saw a table with one girl at it. She looked to a bit older than Nia but she was smaller which made Nia feel a bit more comfortable. She walked over to the table, trying to keep herself from getting any shakes and gave a small, timid smile to the girl.
"Uh.. Hi. Can I sit here?" Her voice was barely audible over the noise of the camp ground.

Lucia had just shoved half of a hamburger in her mouth when the girl approached her. “Mmf, mmhmm!” Lucia nodded eagerly in response to her question, scooting over to make room. She quickly swallowed the rest of the hamburger before reaching her hand out in front of the girl. “I’m Lucia! It’s good to meet you!” she chirped happily.
Lucia was a bit too excited. Her shaky hands and cheerful grin were a dead giveaway of that fact. She was excited to be making friends, but she hoped that didn’t scare the girl away. The girl did seem quiet, but then again, it was very loud at the campsite, so it was hard to tell. Lucia didn’t dwell on those facts too much, though, instead focusing on how the girl actually reacted.

Initially Nia was going to sit across from the girl, but when she moved over to make room next to her, she felt obliged to take the spot. She sat with about a foot of space between them though. She was horribly uncomfortable with people but this was suppose to be a stretch.
"I'm Nia." She said taking the girls hand. Her handshake was, well, weak to say the least. Even though the girl had put on some much needed weight since arriving on the island, she was still mostly skin and bones.
"It is good to meet you too." The words sounded a bit forced and awkward, which they were. She really was terrible at this socializing thing.
Her eyes wandered to Lucia's plate and she suddenly felt like she had done something wrong. The other girl's plate was nearly overflowing with food and Nia's was nearly empty. However, she doubted she would even finish all that was on her plate as is. Her appetite was pretty terrible. She grabbed her fork, poking at her salad self-consciously.

After the short exchange, Lucia turned back to her plate. She managed to down another hamburger and then began to poke the pile of pancakes on her dish. You couldn’t even call it a pile, really. Lucia didn’t want to run the risk of her pancakes toppling to the ground, so she stacked them strategically, creating a pancake fortress. The sticky maple syrup also helped hold things together. In the end, the pancakes couldn’t possibly tip over, and Lucia could eat them in peace.
Too bad that she wasn’t hungry anymore. What a waste of good pancakes.
Instead, she wanted to talk with Nia more. The girl was obviously shy, but Lucia didn’t mind being the one to start a conversation. Almost immediately, she thought of something that would solve both of her problems.
Turning to face Nia, Lucia leaned in an inch closer. With plate of pancakes in hand, she spoke up, “It doesn't look like you're enjoying that salad. Want some pancakes?"

"Oh uh..." Nia wasn't quite sure how to answer the question. The pancakes did look better than her salad but it wasn't that she wasn't enjoying her salad. She actually found that she really liked salads and vegetables and such. She was just feeling really anxious, as usually, and not very hungry.
But, she didn't want to seem rude by turning down the girls offer so she gave a small nod, "Um, yeah. Sure." She moved her small salad off to the side more to make room for whatever amount of pancakes the girl decided to serve her.

Lucia breathed an overly dramatic sigh of relief. “Whew, that’s great! Wouldn’t want these to go to waste,” she said, scraping all of her pancakes onto the small girl’s plate. As she did, the tower slid ever so slightly out of place, drooping over Nia’s salad. A dollop of syrup slowly rolled off the top pancake and plopped onto the lettuce. Lucia leaned back with a smile, blissfully unaware of any internal strife she might be causing the girl sitting next to her.
After a short pause, she blurted, “So why did you decide to come out here today?” She was interested in getting to know Nia a bit more.
