"Oh," Kaz said, and the other boy wrapped his arms around himself and now Kaz could feel the familiar warmth of misery. He told himself that's what he'd been feeling all along, even though this was significantly different from the sensation he felt right in the beginning, when he'd first laid eyes on Luke.

Kaz had no idea what this feeling was, but misery? Misery he knew how to handle.

"Hey, it's okay, I haven't been here that much longer myself," he said.

What the hell was he doing? Why was he trying to make the other boy feel better? That was literally the opposite of what he should be doing?

It's so you can spend more time and it's not so suspicious, he told himself. Right, good job Kaz, plan for the future.

"Things get easier to find, I promise. I'll show you one of the places I like to eat, would that be okay?" he asked. Kaz was thinking of a little sandwich shop right outside of the campus.

"Y-yeah, that sounds nice!" Luke stuttered, mentally cursing himself as his accent bled through during his lapse of composure. "Erm..lead the way and I'll..follow?" He said quietly.

It was more of a question than a statement, however his uncertainty soon turned to embarrassment as Luke realized how awkward the wording sounded. He blushed and then found the floor mildly interesting as he attempted to hide behind his bangs. Luke self consciously tapped a foot against the ground as he waited for the inevitable rejection he was sure would follow. He readied himself to dull the keen sting of yet another person walking out on him.

"I'm not sure why I'm preparing myself for this when it's inevitable anyway. It's not like I'll ever be anything useful." His subconscious told him in a matter of fact tone. Derogatory intent void along with any malice. His mind was simply stating something it perceived to be a fact.

It sounded nice, Luke had said, and Kaz was fascinated by the tint of the accent in his voice.

For one unexpected moment, Kaz was filled with a rush of warmth for this stupid island. They'd come from all around the world and here they were, standing in the same library, going for lunch, with a boy whose voice sounded like he might have only lived a few hundred kilometers from Kaz's home country.

He wasn't sure why that should strike him as fascinating, but it did. At least, that's what Kaz told himself--what other reason was there for him to pay so much attention to the other boy's accent? It couldn't simply be because Kaz enjoyed the sound of his voice?

"Sure, it's not too far off," Kaz said, and he led the way for the other boy, holding the door on the way out. Kaz found he was brimming with questions. He ran a hand through his short hair and finally threw one out there. "So you said you haven't been here too long, right? Where did you come from before the academy?"

It was just small talk, Kaz told himself. It had nothing to do with how much he wanted to hear the other boy's voice again.

Luke was thoroughly perplexed by the kindness displayed by Kaz. He continuously asked himself "Why is he being so nice..it's not like I matter..". His subconscious played this question over and over again. He shook his head in a futile attempt to cleanse the thought from his psyche, although it lurked at the back of his mind.

He blindly followed the other boy lost in his thoughts. He nearly missed the question about the whereabouts of his home country. Luke blushed as he realized he had nearly ignored the other boy and spoke quickly to make up for his blunder. "I'm from Norway." He said in a quiet tone, inwardly cringing as his accent once again made an appearance due to his uncertainty.

"I-I'm sorry about my accent..I know it's hard for some people to understand me when I talk.." He mumbled, feeling ever more embarrassed at the state of his social ability and lack thereof. As he walked he absentmindedly picked at the bracelet that was currently restraining his abilities in Empathy in order to avoid any unwanted blackouts with the number of people he would be coming into contact with.

Luke simply didn't understand. What was so special about him that caused someone to be unconditionally nice?

"Oh!" Kaz said, realizing the other boy misunderstood. Although, that wasn't entirely fair, because Kaz himself was misunderstanding his reasoning for asking. "No, it's perfectly fine. I don't find you difficult to understand at all."

Kaz led the other boy to the edge of the school grounds to a tiny restaurant that was basically a shack with a ktichen, counter and a handful of tables and chairs crammed into the small area.

"It's that, ah, I was from Poland before I came here," Kaz explained. "And it's not always easy to tell where people are from. But your voice kind of reminded me of home a little bit."

He opened the door and then hesitated, holding it for him as he asked a question, "Do you miss Norway?"

Thinking about food made Kaz realize again that he did, in fact, miss home.

"I kind of miss it..It's too warm here sometimes." He said quietly, although his voice was more controlled. Although it was a minor improvement, Luke was slowly lowering his barriers as he began to entertain the thought that maybe, just maybe. Kaz wasn't going to take him into the woods and then murder him. "Of course, the trees would be inconvenienced at my body being left in front of them.." Luke said to himself within the confines of his consciousness.

"Um..if you don't mind me asking..What's Poland like..?" He asked in an attempt to change the subject from such a touchy subject. Home seemed so cold a distant it might as well be on another planet entirely. All the better in order to ignore the shattered remains of his family. Or so he thought.

He shifted uncomfortably. His mind already dissecting the question he had just asked and the possible disregard for the other person in the event that thinking of home brought about similar emotions. Luke nervously pushed his bangs out of his face while focusing his gaze at anything other than the person he had just possibly reminded of bad things.

"Yeah, it is," Kaz agreed easily. It was too warm here in the summer. At first, Kaz enjoyed the heat, but with heat came sweating and damp clothes and it was generally uncomfortable. Kaz was a person who liked to be clean.

At least there was air conditioning in most of these buildings.

When the other boy asked about Poland, Kaz figured it was only fair, given that he'd just asked about Norway. He considered it for a moment and then he laughed, giving the other boy a surprisingly warm smile.

"Much colder than it is here," he said. Kaz glanced at the menu board for a moment, trying to decide what it was that he wanted. He settled on a ruebon, looking forward to the taste of sour kraut.

"It doesn't smell the same as it did at home," Kaz finally said. "The humidity is different here, I guess."

He glanced towards Luke for a moment, convincing himself that the look was just to assess the other boy's reactions to things, but Kaz couldn't help but admire the other boy's features in a way that he was having trouble justifying.

"Please, let me pay for your lunch," Kaz said, and he flashed the boy another warm smile. "I still feel bad about crashing into you like that. And I could use some company. I've been here for months and I mostly just study."

Luke blinked and was taken aback for a moment. Never before had someone offered to pay for something for him. Even the desk chair fiasco had come out of his own pocket. His eyes widened in slight shock as he was still back on the subject of Poland and the temperature differences. "He..wants to do WHAT?!" Luke internally screamed. His mind was slowly overloading itself with reasons and motives Kaz could have for asking to buy him lunch. Among those ideas were ways he could politely decline. "Damn it..Say something you useless fool!" Luke berated himself in his mind and spoke up.

Although when he did, the exact words he was looking for twisted themselves around in his mouth and he spoke in Norwegian. He took a moment and calmed himself down, and then tried again. "N-no it's alright..I..I have enough money..You don't need to spend anything on me.." He said quietly and in an uncertain tone, his accent ever present once again.

Internally, Luke was a mess. Normally he could navigate social situations with relative ease, and either not say much. Or just disappear after a while. Dealing with someone else paying for things wasn't something he was used to, and the appropriate response woefully eluded him.

Luke responded to him in Norwegian and something strange happened.

Kaz felt his face go hot. He touched his cheeks with his fingertips, then the edge of his nose, wondering how the hell could this happen. How could he end up with a nosebleed when he'd just fed. What he'd done to Jake should sustain him for weeks.

Only it wasn't a nosebleed. Kaz was blushing. Because Luke talking in Norwegian was hot. But he wouldn't admit that to himself, so he shook it away.

"Please, I don't need to pay for you," Kaz agreed. "But I want to. There's a difference."

He reached out for Luke's hand despite himself, tugging at it. "This whole situation will be much easier if you let me do what I want, I promise. Here, if it would work...would you like to pay for our drinks?"

It was a compromise of sorts, because Kaz was looking for any excuse he could to get Luke to stay. he's just a potential target, Kaz said. Come on strong in the beginning, it makes it less suspicious later.

That's what he kept telling himself.

Luke jumped slightly when Kaz tugged on his hand. "Why is he being so nice.." He asked himself the same question over and over again in his head. At least he was being given an option, a compromise. He thought over what had been proposed and finally made a decision. With his eyes still hidden behind his bangs he nodded slowly. "Y-yeah, that works.." He said quietly. Luke was still stuck on trying to puzzle out the reason for someone being so unconditionally nice.

"He has to want something..everyone wants something..Unless he doesn't..but then why!" Luke thoroughly stuck in his head, talking in circles in a vain attempt to understand his reasoning. In his puzzled state, he unconsciously slid the bracelet restraining his abilities off his wrist. Thankfully, the amount of people in the immediately area didn't cause Luke to go into sensory overload. However he immediately picked up on the strange emotions coming from Kaz.

What puzzled Luke even more, was that he didn't understand them. He'd felt something similar to them when Liz and Soren were around each other. However even then he still didn't get it. Luke shook his head as if to clear the sensory feedback he was getting. He awkwardly glanced at Kaz from behind his bangs before staring at the bracelet in his hands.

"S-so..what were you doing in the library.." He asked in an attempt to make things a little less awkward.
