The Halloween Masquerade was an annual event that Sabriel had ignored through most of his time at Starlight Academy. He had been a teenager, then, and prone to skipping social events in favor of getting some work done or going for a walk. Back then, the crowds were off-putting enough that he wouldn’t even try—and though crowds still made him weary, he was old enough now to see the value in at least going.
Though some people were wearing such expensive, extravagant clothes that they almost matched the decorations, Sabe’s suit was more simple—a white dress shirt with a black vest, a black tie with small white polka dots tucked inside it, and a gray suit jacket with a pocket square. The mask he had made himself: it covered the top half of his face, with feathers rising out of the top, so that it resembled a raven.
In an effort to avoid being asked to dance with someone, Sabriel kept close to the sides of the ballroom. His camera was strapped around his neck, and though he looked like a wallflower, what he was really doing was snapping pictures—the costumes were too grand to pass up.
