Masquerade Ball: Event Thread

The Halloween Masquerade was an annual event that Sabriel had ignored through most of his time at Starlight Academy. He had been a teenager, then, and prone to skipping social events in favor of getting some work done or going for a walk. Back then, the crowds were off-putting enough that he wouldn’t even try—and though crowds still made him weary, he was old enough now to see the value in at least going.

Though some people were wearing such expensive, extravagant clothes that they almost matched the decorations, Sabe’s suit was more simple—a white dress shirt with a black vest, a black tie with small white polka dots tucked inside it, and a gray suit jacket with a pocket square. The mask he had made himself: it covered the top half of his face, with feathers rising out of the top, so that it resembled a raven.

In an effort to avoid being asked to dance with someone, Sabriel kept close to the sides of the ballroom. His camera was strapped around his neck, and though he looked like a wallflower, what he was really doing was snapping pictures—the costumes were too grand to pass up.

Tesa Agapi (Dress, Pale White Pearl Greek Tragedy Mask)

Though Tesa didn't usually go to parties anymore, this was apparently one of the biggest social events on the island and a LOT of people were going to be there. She didn't know if Aedan was going but she felt like she needed at least a few nights out on her own. She couldn't just keep herself locked up in the dorms whenever Aedan wasn't around. So she had pulled out a dress that her mother Aphrodite had picked out for her...back when she still went to parties. Those memories she was going to have to bury and the only way to do that was to make some new ones....or attempt to continue drowning them in wine.

So here she was...taking a deep breath she walked into the ball room. Something seeing all of it...made her heart beat stronger, she felt the energy in the room and it coursed through her. Behind her mask she smiled under the frown of tragedy. But standing in the door just absorbing the atmosphere of the room was going to get awkward for everyone so like the Greek Goddess that was in her blood she walked into the room confidently. She wasn't looking for a one night stand, or a date or anything. She had Aedan, this was just for fun and to enjoy herself.

"Indeed," he said, an amused smile lingering on his lips. Liked to lead? It was an understatement, really. He was a man that emphasized power and control above all else.

He led them into the dance floor gracefully, moving in time with the other dancers. He took a few moments to get used to the dance and the steps before carrying on with the conversation. "You're quite the head turner, my dear. Many eyes are looking upon us with envy. Tell me, do you have any wishes for tonight?"

The man was having a grand of a time dancing with others. He bowed to his last partner in farewell, a pretty girl with a yellow dressed that glowed in the sun. He scanned the crowd for more interesting people to dance with. A lovely lamia lady caught his eye.

He'd never danced with a lamia before! He wondered what it would be like? They would never worry about footing, that was for sure. The man was no prince, but even in his enthusiasm, he held the demeanor of a man raised in wealth. Perhaps it would be close enough.

He smiled at her, offering her his hand. "I'm hoping you're not meeting with a date, because you're one of the most stunning people I've laid eyes on tonight. Dance with me?"

Dancing expertly with his partner, the domino masked man let himself be lost in the music of the moment, drifting along as his partner led their movements.

At his partner's comment he couldn't help but let a fiendish grin creep across his face. He did, in fact, notice the looks they were getting. He could practically taste the envy and desire, faint as they were, wafting their direction.
"Oh I notice. I would be a liar if I said I disliked the attention."

To the other man's question about his own intentions for the evening, the domino masked man hummed for a moment, as if considering the question. In truth, he knew exactly what he wanted and was merely playing the game to get it.
"Oh my. Forward and to the point then. I have many wishes. The most pressing one would be to finish this dance. Then a drink, and more conversation. After that, who knows?"

All I know is when the night is over, I don't plan on falling asleep alone. He let the stray thought go unsaid, not wanting to potentially spoil the mood.
Letting a hand fall lightly on his dance partner's chest, his grin lowered into a simmering smile. Not too quickly, he reminded himself. The dance was just the first step of the game. Can't go skipping bases before running home.
"What about you? Surely you must have some idea of what tonight will hold."

Narraine couldn't help but feel envious of the other couples now moving gracefully around. Some were simply walking chatting up other couples, while a majority had hit the floor and were looking like they belonged in a fairy tale. She even sat back wondering how many had paired off randomly versus how many had arrived together. With all of the masks and costumes and glamours that were in place it was hard to guess who was who. Maybe that made things more fun, encouraged people to mingle and be social. Regardless she assumed that everyone knew who she was and that the air of mystery was gone.

The Lamia had even contemplated leaving early when out of nowhere a stranger approached her. He sported a white tuxedo and a rather handsome metallic looking mask. There was no doubt that he was very handsome. Given his looks, and rather smooth approach Narraine was all the more shocked when he extended a hand to her and asked her to dance. He even caused her to blush furiously by stating that she was stunning.

It took her a moment to collect her words. She was entirely caught off guard, but luckily she managed a smile and and enthusiastic "Yes!" As she took his hand allowing him to lead her out onto the dance floor. She had taken a few lessons on how to dance in the weeks before the Ball to prepare for the occasion, though she was by no means a pro. She would however be able to hold her own.

The ball was absolutely beautiful as it had been in the years prior to this. It truly was one of the most celebrated events of the year. There was always a good time to be had, Be it with the guests, the food or even the music. The music in particular was always a live band comprised of the top students that the academy had to offer, and this year, taking up the cello was Aylin.

Her eyes were closed as she sat positioned on her tail, with her cello nestled safely against her front. Her and the rest of the band had been playing a rather upbeat classical piece that allowed many of the guests to dance rather easily. Aylin and the other students performing tonight had been given a set list of songs they must play, but had also been granted the freedom to play a few of their own choosing so long as they met certain criteria, to help ensure that the entire evening would be covered musically.

Aylin herself was dressed in a sleek black form fitting dress that highlighted her ever growing baby bump. She was also wearing a simple black Venetian mask, not that it allowed her any sort of mystery. It was after all no secret who she was.

She didn't like dressing up, not even a little. She had been the type of girl who wore trousers when it was anything but acceptable. Still, she did dress up well, if she said so herself.

That night when she arrived at the ball, the French woman scanned the crowd for a source of entertainment. In the back of her mind, she wondered if tonight would be one in which she could receive a good drink, but she swiftly dispelled the thought. A ball was no place for victims.

What caught her eye, of all the dancer's, all the servants, and all the band members was a Lamia playing the cello. The music was exquisite, and the woman found herself drawn to its source. She stood nearby, strangely not awkward despite having nothing to do. When the Lamia looked up at a brief recess, the woman bowed her head and gave a quick curtsy.

"I must admit, I've rarely heard a tune so fine. Tell me, mademoiselle, what may I call you?"

Everyone was so focused on clothing and flashy colors, but she had never been a flashy person, not how she would consider herself, at least. Her dress was simple: black and beaded, something more appropriate for a funeral rather than a ball. No, the truly impressive part of her outfit was an imposing horned mask. She felt like Magnificent.

For extra anonymity and because it reminded her of Autumn, she had glamoured herself to have light auburn hair and piercing golden eyes. She felt pretty damn complete when she entered the hall. She'd never been to a ball before, and this one didn't disappoint her expectations.

Who knew what the night held in store?
