The ballroom is decorated ornately, colored with a rich Autumn palette. Enchantingly haunting wreaths of twigs, crow feathers, and what seems to be living crows adorn the walls. Set in place of flowers are uncarved pumpkins which further add to the aroma of delicious foods and the colorful variety of scented candles lining the tables.

Further adding to the air of mystery, the lights have been dimmed, and the room radiates a reddish-orange light, that seems to create a pleasant lightheaded effect.

If all of that wasn't overwhelming enough, the people look as though they came right out of fantasy books. Dressed to impress and moving with near impossible grace to harmonious music playing from a live band toward the back of the room.

Well, this is it, the Masquerade Ball. Maybe you've come in search of a good time, good food, or exquisite company. What you will find is as mysterious and elusive as the people gracing this hall.

Dr. Aiden Hart had lost his colleagues.

They'd convinced him to go to the masquerade and the doctor had donned his best suit and a simple cat mask. He wore gloves, too, and he was glad they were black to he didn't stain them when he rested his palm on a table that happened to have spilled wine on it.

Aiden frowned.

On top of losing his colleagues, he had also lost his drink, so he returned to the table and began looking at the punch.

"Do you think it's spiked?" he asked the person nearest to him.

"I don't think so dear. It would be a complete faux pas for someone to try to drug anyone at an event so highly regarded by the community."

The woman who spoke to Dr. Hart wore a simple black evening dress with a wide brimmed hat with her hair put up to hide it's entirety underneath it. No mask adorned her face, but instead a silk veil, black as the rest of her outfit but adorned with a pattern that gave the illusion of dozens of white eyes across the fabric.

She took a sip of her own drink underneath her veil, scanning the crowd for the person she was waiting on.

"Penelope Pernicious. A pleasure."

He wasn't as keen on formal events as the rest of his family. He was the casual son, no obligations or expectations about where he was supposed to fit into the machine that was their economic empire. But he was here because it was a break from the mundane. And because he had missed the last big formal event and hadn't been able to help when the whole thing went to shit.

Like much of the rest of his family, he was dressed in a princely uniform reminiscent of a military officer's regalia and a domino mask plated in precious metal. But where his siblings wore gold, he opted for silver. It was less gaudy, he felt, and more in line with his place. It also helped him stand out against the crowd of black suits and red hair of his kin.

She held her breath as she walked into the hall. She had spent the last month preparing for this moment, this night, this chance to share a real dance. She was dressed up rather elegantly, more than she had ever been since coming here. He hair was done up in a thick braid that hung over her shoulder. Her dress was virginal white and nearly too short in the front, but full length in the back. Her legs long and slender, her feet were small and bare. Around her neck, a long slender ribbon made several loops before extending out along her arms. Her face was hidden behind a simple light purple lace mask. Finally, just barely visible under her dress, a light purple ribbon, tied neatly like a garter around her upper thigh.

She walked swiftly and smoothly towards the center of the hall, spinning to the music, and making sure to hold the front of her dress down. She was excited and happy to be here like this. If anyone were to recognize her they might figure out why things were so different tonight. But so far no one had.

She became lost in the music and simply moved, swaying and spinning, dancing with nobody but herself. She was a princess in her own fairy tale.

"It would be a faux pas, though that does not decrease my worry that I'll come home and discover I'm too inebriated to finish my reports," Aiden admitted. Though he agreed with the woman's assessment, he was generally not as trusting that other folks would be so quick to follow laws or rules, let alone social nicety.

He sighed and asked the woman in the veil, "Have you tried any of it yet?"

Although Aiden assumed he was going to be making himself into a guinea pig one way or another. As the mysterious woman introduced himself, he gave a smile and a small bow.

"Aiden Hart," he introduced himself. "Charmed."

He sighed and fished himself out a cup of the punch after all.

"is this your first ball?" he asked.

For him formal events always seemed to go rather sour but this one seemed to be of his liking. He somewhat disliked him self at this point in time and to keep himself hidden behind a mask was something that he enjoyed. Not having to care about who he was for even a few hours seemed like a dream to him.

He was wearing a navy blue suit and a formal white undershirt with some rather nice looking navy jeans to match. His mask was extremely simple it had a joyful expression and it covered his whole face letting his reddish hair stick out. He Silently walked into the ballroom and looked around it was as nice as he expected it, as long as his time had been on Manta Carlos and all the events he had been to they had all been presented very nicely. He glanced over to the girl in the center and tilted his head before chuckling to him self, he always enjoyed others enjoying them self. He gave a little clap before moving to a wall where he would lean up against it and watch silently from his spot.

She wore a large rabbit mask that covered most of her face and hair. Her gown had a large crinoline that made it flounce out like a Princess dress…but she was no princess.

The truth was that her crinoline was lined with many, many pockets for all the things she intended to steal from this little soirée. She had no interest in the pleasantries.

Ah, but she had to be patient. She couldn’t just start shoving things under her dress and expect to get out unnoticed. So she mingled in the crowd, just like any other person at this…fancy party whatever shit.

She noticed a man drop a cufflink, which he did not realize. She stepped over the cufflink, covering it in her big poofy princess gown. Shit, what she would give to have feet with toes again so she could pick it up like a monkey and just slide it right into a pocket in her skirt lining.

But it was fine. Instead, she dropped a handkerchief she had with her. When she bent to pick it up, she also shifted just enough to reveal and quickly snatch up the cufflink. She had no idea if the item had any real value or not but nonetheless, she stuffed it in her bra when no one was looking. Well, it was a start.

Oh my god this place looks so amazing, the pumpkin spice aroma, the way the lights just whirly dim like that, and the way the crows on the wall look so alive, gives me the urge to up to one and poke it, I am sure I could coax it to move if I dangled something shiny in front of it, inanimate or not, who can resist am I right?!
.

It was obviously her first time ever at a ball. It was also her first time in a while to be in such an extravagantly decorated area, with such extravagantly decorated people, the combination of new with the old lit the girl's curiosity even more, and took another step further towards the center of the room.

Not knowing where to start, she decides to head towards one of the gigantic mirrors, pretending to be giving a "touch-up" on her make-up, whilst also making sure the dress her aunt practically forced her to wear was still covering up the most important parts of her body. To be honest, however, this entire thing just felt so good. Even though she managed to get her aunt to agree for a more "simple" design, she still was able to feel that rare yet so sweet feeling of "Wow, I look nice in this", which made her smile, and even the mask managed to fit so well, geez, she managed to make herself blush!

Deciding to stop staring at her own reflection that hard, and before her mind convinced her it would be a great idea to spend the rest of her time there staring at the golden layers of encrusted jewels on this mirror sounded like a great idea, she puffed her cheeks for one more time, before turning her back to that minuscule over frothing attention to her ego, and decided to step back into the brand new, autumn based world of wonder laying before her.

After hearing someone say
Gosh, the buffet over there looks amazing
, she just basically tried to elegantly tiptoe her way towards it, which made it pretty hard to be elegant when you are drooling like that.

"My first ball? No, I've been to a few in my time. They're usually so dull. Hopefully this one gives me some decent entertainment."

She took another sip of her drink and gestured to Aiden with it. "Of course I've been sampling the drinks since this started. They aren't spiked. Just don't drink any of mine. I put my own booze in my cup."

Penelope let out a laugh, pausing to adjust her veil so it continued to cover her face entirely.

I presume you are a teacher then, perhaps?"
