William's palm faced the sun, absorbing its heat through a single point on his skin. The sunlight was especially warming from his spot on the tower. He was leaning against the railing, absorbing sunlight while simultaneously watching over all that was below him.

The tower had quickly become one of his favorite spots to relax. Even when there were other people up there—which, fortunately, wasn't the case now—it was still quite close to the sun. There weren't many things to block it, either. Will's new room would have been a better option for him if it was bigger than the tower and if sunlight shined through the window regularly. He was sure his roommate wouldn't like that, though.

Will put his hand down, feeling refreshed. He sighed contently and leaned over the railing, giving himself a view of the courtyard below. His eyes scanned everything little thing. Eventually, he found a friend of his, Elizabeth, leaning over something near a bench. He watched her curiously for a few seconds before deciding to find out what she was doing. Feathery wings formed on his back and he made his way to the ground, similar to how he had done it days ago.

Will walked up to the girl slowly, as to not startle her. He sat down on the bench and placed his hands on his lap. "Hey, Elizabeth," he said. "What are you doing?"

Yet again, Lizzy was outside taking care of the plants. She might as well become part of the maintenance staff of the academy for the gardens with how often she took it upon herself to water, groom, and even fertilize many of the plants around the campus.

She was walking along the courtyard when a loud thud from behind startled her. She jumped and even let out a quiet squeak. She really hated being shocked like such, but she decided after the immediate emotion to look for the cause and settle the mystery that scared her once and for all. She turned around and bent forward by a bush. There, she saw that a little squirrel has fallen and wounded himself. There was no way Elizabeth was going to leave it like that.

She sat down on the ground and laid the wounded squirrel on her lap. Then, she touched the ground beneath her with one hand, the other hand on the squirrel, and started saying enchantments to begin transferring the energy of the ground into the squirrel's body.

That was when she heard a familiar voice call out.

"William!" she smiled. Unfortunately, she couldn't go near him because of the squirrel. She was still in the middle of healing it, and William would see how the air around the it glows, but the soil Elizabeth was taking the energy from was turning rotten-black.

"This little creature seems to have had a bad fall off the tree. But perhaps he had already been weak before that, since squirrels don't usually fall so easily. I'm trying to heal him. Do you want to get a closer look? Come!"

William walked over to Elizabeth with his hands behind his head. Sure enough, there was a small creature lying down on her lap. Although it didn't seem it, he could tell the squirrel was definitely injured. They usually never got too close to humans.

As Will got closer, he realized that the area around the squirrel was glowing. It was definitely mana. He almost smiled as he remembered the feeling of mana warming his soul, but suppressed the urge. This certainly wasn't the time to smile.

"Poor thing," Will said as he dropped to his knees. He wanted to help it in some way, but didn't know what would be best. He decided that Elizabeth was a better person at this than he was, and didn't interfere.

It was only after getting so close to the ground that he realized that the soil had gotten dark. Like, much darker than it was before. He frowned, and almost placed his palm into it before deciding against it. Instead, he turned to Elizabeth. "What happened here? The soil isn't supposed to be like this, is it?"

A small frown formed on Elizabeth's lips. The dying land was ugly, and she didn't like it at all. "It's my doing," she explained and almost sounded venomed with rueful loathing. "I can't heal someone on my own. I must take the mana from something else to give to another, and since earth always heals itself in time, it's where I usually borrow mana from. I do wish I didn't have to, though."

The squirrel got up as she finished and pulled back her hands. Still an untamed creature of nature, the little thing immediately ran away, back to the trees. Elizabeth's eyes and lips were softened by a smile that was both warm and sad at the same time, as she watched it leave.

The small traces of sadness soon left, and Elizabeth turned to her friend with her usual energetic expression. "So, this is why I joined the gardening club! I want to help invigorate the land more than I kill it. By the way, what brings you here, William?"

William stood back up as the squirrel scampered off, and it disappeared from sight after a few seconds. He couldn't help but wonder what was going through the little animal's head at the time. Was it appreciative?

Such thoughts left his head as he let this new information sink in. It made a lot of sense to him. To give mana to something, you must take mana from something. It made him wonder if everyone who had healing powers did it the same way Elizabeth did, but he quickly doubted that. It was immediately obvious that people were very different on this island.

However, Will could tell that Elizabeth didn't like doing it, so he moved to reassure her. "Well, I think it's fine as long as you're doing it for a good reason," he said. "Like helping hurt animals, for instance."

Will pointed to the tower behind. "I was standing up there, just absorbing some sunlight and enjoying the view. I jumped down when I noticed you were down here." And then: "It's nice that you're giving back to the earth. I didn't know there was a gardening club."

"Thank you, William. You always say things that make me feel better. I guess I shouldn't wonder, considering you're very much like the sun." Elizabeth wobbled a little when she stood up, but she managed to keep her balance. Whether she healed something small or big, using her magic still took its toll from her. She absentmindedly stroked the silver cuff around her right wrist. Ignoring the sensation as it faded, she chuckled. "Perhaps you want to join the club? I would love to see you in a gardening outfit! With the straw hat and the gloves and work boots!"

She turned to where William pointed. "Ah. You've grown fond of that spot, haven't you? Well, did you get enough-- sunlight, I mean?"

Where they stood wasn't particularly shaded, but the sun must have been better on the tower rather than here on the ground. In any case, Elizabeth tugged at William's arm and pulled him to the bench so they can sit down. After doing so, Elizabeth looked up at the sky. It was mostly blue save for some cotton like white clouds, and the sun was not at all hidden.

She giggled. "Supposedly, it's the plants that photosynthesize, right?"

Will saw Elizabeth shake slightly as she stood up and stepped forward to help her, but she quickly righted herself. The boy didn't worry about it too much. He figured that it might have just been a side effect of using her healing ability. However, if it seemed she was having difficulty moving later on, he would definitely bring it up.

Will didn't even halve to think about his answer. "Sure, I'll give the club a try," he said. "I've never done much with gardening, so I think it'd be fun. I'll check it out some other time."

He looked back up at the tower, blocking his eyes from the sun's rays. It was quite ironic that he gained energy from the sun, but had to shield his eyes from it. "I think I got a sufficient amount."

Once they were on the bench, Will chuckled as Elizabeth mentioned photosynthesis. "I never really thought of it that way," he said, "but yes, it is kinda like photosynthesis. Except I don't grow because of it. Sunlight just gives me a little more energy."

The idea of William photosynthesizing made his friend giggle some more, but she decided not to hold onto it too much. For a joke material, William was agreeing to it too easily.

Elizabeth leaned back into a more relaxed position against the bench. The sun was indeed warm and even Elizabeth felt herself getting re-energized being showered with its rays. And then, she held up her hand with the cuff to show it to him. "This is my source for energy. It automatically sucks mana from the air for me so I can move around like a normal person. I'm... I'm actually very sick. So without this, I won't be able to do anything, especially mana usage."

She grinned at William in hopes to show him that she was alright and it was nothing big. She even offered the cuff for a closer look. "Isn't it beautiful? My late parents made it for me."

Will intertwined his hands on his lap and leaned back a bit. He found that this place was suitable for sunlight as well, even though it wasn't as close to the sun as the tower. Maybe it was just because a friend was in his presence, but still, it was quite relaxing. At this point, he wasn't sure if there was a place that wouldn't be relaxing.

Upon mentioning it, Will looked at the silver cuff that was around Elizabeth's wrist. He simply stared at it for a few seconds. That cuff was enabling her to talk to him right now. It was basically her life face. He was sure if he liked the fact that she was dependent on such a simple thing. It even slightly saddened him.

Will new what she was trying to do with that smile. It was one of reassurance. He had shown it to many people many times, including her. However, it didn't quite convince him in this instance. He leaned in to see it closer.

"Yes, it is quite beautiful, but...." Will tried to find the right words. "Don't you think you should hide it a bit? Like, under your sleeve or something? I just don't think it should be exposed like that. If I was someone with bad intentions, I could've slipped it right off. Of course, I would never dream of doing something like that, but, you know. As an example."

"Do you really think so?" Elizabeth had quite a puzzled look on, and she stared at her cuff for a good few seconds while taking into consideration what William said about hiding it. She pulled her dress' long sleeve over it, as if she's only become conscious of it now. "Well, I guess I do understand it's safer hidden like this," she replied, nodding, and putting back on her smile. She turned to William again. "But nobody else here knows about it. It's just you, and I know I'm safe around you, William. You're a very good friend!"

Elizabeth did think about William a lot. She's relied on him more than a few times now, each time needing to put her complete trust and safety in him and he always managed to keep them both safe. She told him about her cuff because she thought telling him a secret like this would get them closer. It was because she trusted him.

She was too embarrassed to say all that out loud.

"Anyway," she cleared her throat, "Would you like another mana treatment like the last time? I mean... I understand you said you've just gotten some energy from the sunlight but... I don't know." She shrugged. It was the only offer she managed to think of giving, as a return favor for all those times William has taken care of her.
