Elizabeth made a good point. Her usage of mana could go both ways, which is why Will thought it was very useful. It made you relaxed when there was nothing going on, and gave you energy when the situation arose. Will didn't even know if those were mana's only capabilities, which gave him more faith in her.

Will's attention was now fully on his friend when she mentioned getting pranked. He frowned and crossed his arms. "Someone tried to pull a prank on you?" he asked. "I've never seen the appeal of pranking. My best friend used to do them all the time, but I always disapproved. When did this happen? What did they do?"

The thought of someone pulling a prank on Elizabeth confused Will greatly. Why would someone pull a prank on her, of all people? She was probably the least deserving of a prank, unless she did something bad that he didn't know about, but he doubted it. She didn't seem like the type.

Elizabeth was quite surprised at William's reaction, to be honest, and she blinked at him as it sank into her. "Yes, someone pulled a prank on me," she nodded, before humming as she tried to recall what had happened.

"It really wasn't much though, Will. It was a few days ago, if I remember this right. I was wondering around past curfew time, it was dark, and I wasn't minding my surroundings very well since I was watering the plants." Then again, it sounded ridiculous now that she's thought about it. She made a confused frown as she mentally asked herself why she even did that. "It was a harmless joke. They had this... this way of poking at people from afar, and they tapped my shoulder multiple times. The fact that nobody was around me was quite frightening, and I panicked."

She sighed, reflecting on the happenings of that night. She'd look at William, and she'd look at him with worry on how he might find her story. "I'm not proud of that moment. It's true, I broke the rules that time, too. And I killed precious plants."

Will listened intently to Elizabeth's story. He was waiting to hear that the person had hurt her or something, but fortunately, she said nothing of the sort. It truly was a harmless joke.

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Well, it is kind of your fault that you were out past curfew," he said, "but your reaction was fair. The fact that they sneaked up on you caused that reaction, though. So, uh, in a way, you're both at fault." Realizing that Elizabeth might get upset by his wording, Will added: "But it's not really that big a deal."

As he said these words, a thought came to him. "Hey, what did you mean when you threw raw mana at him?" he asked. "Is it just the type of mana you usually give me?"

"I know..." Elizabeth shrank and blushed, completely embarrassed by the incident. William's reactions didn't help at all; he was right, and for the things that happened, she had already gotten in trouble that night. She sighed.

When William asked about her mana, it was a chance to change the subject and Elizabeth almost too willingly turned to him and responded. "No. Not exactly." She looked around, wondering if she could show him how she had done it that night. She wasn't sure it was a smart move to do it.

"I usually convert mana into healing energy before using it on a person the way I gave it to you. If I don't do that, I can also use it to hurt people-- which I won't be doing today," she said with a slight shrug and a sheepish grin. "I wouldn't want to accidentally hurt you, William."

The sight of Elizabeth being embarrassed placed some guilt in Will's heart. He turned away in case that guilt was showing on his face. "Like I said, it's not that big a deal," he said again. "There's no need to be embarrassed. You were just going to water some flowers, but did so at a time you weren't supposed to. You didn't break any major laws, or anything. At least, I don't think so...."

Will shrugged after Elizabeth finished explaining raw mana. "It's fine," he said. "I don't really wanna get hurt either." However, this brought upon another question. "You seem to able to do a lot of things with mana. What else can you do? Of course, you don't have to show me—you've done enough already—but you could explain it."

In the meantime, Will played around with his flames. He created flames around his fists and shot a few fireballs into the air. Each of them dissipated after a few seconds. He did that a few more times, practicing his aim by making some fireballs crash into others.

Elizabeth was as amazed at William's magic as he was curious about her mana, and before answering, she found herself watching him quietly, motionlessly, until she realized a few seconds later that William had asked her another question. She tapped a finger over her cheek in thought.

"I can only do four things, to be honest. You know three of them already-- healing, draining, destruction. You've seen me use it to heal and give energy, what happened that night was 'destruction'. And, I've already mentioned that I have to take energy from somewhere in order to give it to someone, yes? I can drain others' mana to steal their strength, too. And I can kill soulless creatures with it. The fourth one is this."

Elizabeth stepped away and then bent forward to harvest some mana from the ground she was standing on, and stretched herself and her arms up, a translucent wall forming in the space where her hand had traveled-- from the ground and up into the air, stopping one feet higher than her. It looked like glass that reflected swirling colors, like spilled oil on cement after the rain. Through it, she grinned at William and said, "Throw some flames at me."

Since the wall was quite thick, Elizabeth was confident her shield wasn't going to break so easily with just one fireball.

Will watched with wonder as a wall formed in front of Elizabeth. It was like nothing he had ever seen before, and he assumed that it acted like a shield. He had already known that her mana had many uses, but the fact that it could be made into a physical substance still surprised him nonetheless.

However, despite how impressed he was, Will nearly did a double take when she asked him to throw a fireball at her. He almost immediately refused, but decided to think about it. She seemed confident in her ability to protect herself with that shield, and she didn't seem too tired after giving Will some mana. She was obviously very proud about her skills as a mana user, so refusing would simply make her upset.

With a sigh, Will formed a fireball on his hand. He hesitated for a few seconds before swinging his arm in an arc and sending a fireball her way.

Elizabeth flinched a little upon impact, but the solid shield didn't even crack. She grinned proudly, completely oblivious of how William might be worrying about her at the moment, even missing his sigh. She let her hands fall to her sides, and the shield instantly vanished.

She also didn't notice herself stagger a little, yet again. This must have been more tiring than she thought it was, but her silver cuff kept her standing. After finding back her balance, she quickly shortened her and William's distance from one another. She smiled at him brightly. "Now you know. You're the only one I've showed it to, and as far as I know only you and my cousin would know about this. We're not going to be enemies ever, are we, William? I hope that never happens."

The fireball smacked into Elizabeth's shield and dispersed as a result. William sighed, finding himself not only relieved, but also impressed. That mana was really useful, and she seemed to know how to use it well. Will decided that he would put more trust in his friend.

He squinted his eyes slightly at her strange question. "Of course, there's no way for me to know whether or not we will become enemies," he said, "but I can't think of any reason as to why we would. I'd like to think that we're really good friends."

Deciding that he wanted to change the subject, Will said, "I didn't know you had a cousin. What's their name? What are they like?"

That, Elizabeth noticed: William's reaction to her indeed strange question. Most people wouldn't even ask something like that, but on that note Elizabeth wasn't most people because she was sent in the island in the first place because there were people who wanted her dead. It's a fact that always hung over her head, despite the cheeriness, despite the smiles.

"Thank you, William. Let's keep it that way." She needed to hear him say it, and she was glad to hear from him that there was no reason for them to be enemies. After all, she just told him everything she could do. She probably shouldn't have, but she was glad she did.

"Yes, I have a cousin here," she replied. "His name is Roland, and he's a mage just like me. If he weren't here, my family probably wouldn't have sent me here on this island. Although... we haven't been meeting often so it doesn't really matter, I suppose? I'm on my own either way."

Humming thoughtfully, Elizabeth decided to throw her friend back the question. "How about you? Do you have a family here?"
