"Something like that. I don't mean like human sacrifice, although I imagine really strong stuff might go that way. I just mean... well, you use your power, you feel tired. You have to replenish your strength. Things like that." It wasn't exactly the most complex theory, but his area of expertise was history, not science or anything to do with magic. It was simply idle musings, and what he'd picked up from the other students.

As for his own powers? Well, personally he found his own powers a bit boring. He supposed most people found their powers to be a bit boring, but... ah, well, his powers couldn't even be considered powers by everyone.

"I'm not actually a human with powers - I'm just a half. So, natural abilities in tune with my species, as opposed to shooting fireballs or things like that." The only real demonstration he could make was his flexibility, and he did so with ease, twisting around in his seat until he was facing more or less directly behind him. Possible for a human, but out of reach for the majority.

He rested there for a moment before turning back with a shrug. "That, and a good sense of taste-smell, but I'd rather not taste the BO of every person in the room." He made a face for emphasis. No matter how well people washed, he could still taste-smell it if he tried.

"I don't mean literal sacrifice, I mean whatever works though." He'd give a bit of a shrug, he was very interested in powers and such but not wanting to get more into it he decided to drop it. Maybe there were classes for learning them and the philosophies on them.

"A half?" Mal wasn't familiar with what he meant using that terminology but he didn't ponder it for long because of the spine snapping feat Ophion just demonstrated without a sweat.

A smile spreading across his face, "Oh man! Don't sell yourself short, that's crazy cool, I mean sure you don't walk through walls or shoot lasers from your finger tips but flexibility like that is wicked. You should be a secret agent, so you can slip through laser fields with ease. I bet you're great at twister.. or limbo!" Mal was obviously more excited about this than Ophion himself was.

"Taste-smell huh? I bet with practice you'd be able to track people down, like distinguish scents, I suppose like a bloodhound without the whole dog thing."

"Halfling, half, cross, whatever term you want to use. Someone who's half human, half something else." He explained with a shrug. "Or if you want to get really technical, I guess I'd be a quarter, since my mom was one of those half-human half-animal species." But really, he was just a half - half naga, not quarter snake.

"I could track someone down if I had more control over it. As it is, if someone's farted the room in the last half hour I might as well just keel over before I even start. Humans are, honestly, pretty gross." He had a hard time using his taste-smell anywhere near humans. Using it in nature? No problem. Humans? Too many strong smells. Heaven help him if someone had used perfume near him. "I guess it's the sort of thing that seems really impressive until you've been like that forever, and then it just seems normal."

"Well, first off, talk about a cool family tree. Second, halfling just makes me think of hobbits because that's the other name for them. Third, interesting, I won't pry or anything about details if that's too personal but you know, you got what nature gave ya. Make the best of it no matter what it is." Mal was basically citing their talk about powers, it still applied even if it was a natural thing he got from a parent. He was rather curious about the specific species though, it sounded really interesting to Mal, considering that he was interested in the other part of the world.

"Yikes, like I said though lots of practice. I can understand that, well not to your degree but I get the human disgust thing." Humans were rather gross, it's what kept him to a hygiene regimen more than anything, just seeing and smelling people that don't have them.

"I don't think you should see it like that, getting used to something doesn't make it more fantastic. We have all had our powers and that's why we're here, I developed mine at a young age, like 5, so being able to pull things from existence is normal for me." He'd lay his hands on the table, palms up, looking at them. "It's your viewpoint I suppose, in the grand scheme of things we're all just a microcosm of a microcosm of life in the universe. But life is marvelous besides that fact, of all the atoms in the universe there was a few that created life instead of inanimate objects. Even less that turned into animals instead of plants, and even less still were turned into sentient species."

He'd sigh, obviously getting lost in his own thought processes again, he'd look back up at Ophion. "Sorry about that, I suppose the idea is viewpoint, just gotta change your perspective."

"Nah, it's not a secret." In truth, he thought it was kind of obvious. That said, he was completely ignorant to what it was like to be new to the island. He'd been born and raised there, and he had no real perspective on what it was like to be from the mainland. When someone said 'taste-smell', he just assumed some kind of snake connection. When someone said they could fly, he immediately asked if it was with wings, or if they could manipulate the wind. It was things like that which made all the difference. "Wanna take a guess, based on what you know?"

Malvoes hummed for a few moments, thinking back to his mythology researching hobbies.
"Well, given the flexibility, I'd first say some sort of cephalopod, but I don't know a lot of squid-men through mythology."

He'd give a chuckle, this was supposed to be an obvious joke but who knows if there are squid men or not. "If I'm understanding the taste-smell thing to be what I think it means, then I'm going to have to guess a species of snake-like beings. I'm assuming that not many dragons that are snakelike also interbreed with humans, considering how in stories they're usually more about eating, but you know that could be a misconstrued detail."

He'd narrow his eyes a bit, looking at Ophion, he really enjoyed this, using his knowledge to figure things out. If he was so inclined he'd probably enjoy detective work. "So what comes to mind when I think snake beings. Either gorgons, like Medusa and her sisters were, but I don't recall her having offspring or heirs. So my second thought are Nagas or Lamias. Though I don't know if they really have the lower body be the serpentine tail, and the torso be human, I haven't met one."

Mal would smile, "How'd I do?"

Ophion just barely restrained a laugh at the idea of him being some kind of octopus man. They did sort of exist (some said scylla's were half octopus), but they were nowhere near as common as many other species.

"Yep, you're dead on. Mom's a naga. Or a lamia. Really, two words for the same thing. Lamia are greek, Naga are asian. There's also the Melusine, which is general european, mostly in france." He had put a lot of effort into researching the history of naga. It was like researching his own family history. "Technically, half-naga can sometimes end up with the tail, and sometimes not. They've always got something going on - I've got scales." Not that it was appropriate to show them off, because peeling your shirt off in the middle of a school sanctioned social event was inappropriate, to say the least.

"Puts me in the other half of the school population from you. Half are here because of what they can do, and half are here because of what they were." He was lucky enough to be able to pass as mostly human, assuming you didn't get him shirtless. That said, he wasn't actually that much more strong or powerful than a human. All he really had was an affinity with snakes, some scales, and his taste-smell.

Oh, and a complete inability to warm himself up in the winter. That too.

"Technically, there's no real limits. Anything else could still show up here, even if they don't appear in folklore. Folklore just shows the common ones, the ones populous enough to be known to local human villages back in the day."

Mal would nod intently as he listen to Ophion, this stuff was his bread and butter and he loved hearing this. Which probably showed in the pure interest in his face as he looked on at Ophion. "I suppose some scales aren't the worse thing to get in genetics, I mean I almost had a uni-brow thanks to one of my relatives."

"I guess I never thought about it like that, abilities for one group and the other it's genetic. Something a bit off about that in my head, not sure though." There was a nagging feeling in his mind when he thought about it, like this was in some way a bit wrong.

He thought on it for a moment but shook it out of his head, too much for his mind at the moment. "I suppose that'll be interesting, the day I run into somebody I can't figure out."

He let out a little chuckle at the mention of a unibrow. It could have indeed been worse. His scales were pretty mild, he had none on obvious places, and for the most part he'd gotten his mother's looks (which was a good thing, because his dad wasn't much of a looker).

"Eh, not quite so cut and dry, but for the most part. There's some genetics that also got powers, but for the most part people are one or the other. Sometimes you get abilities that mimic species, which make things really weird." There was a fine line to be drawn between someone who was a werewolf, and someone who was a wolf shapeshifter for example.

"Will probably be sooner rather than later. We've got actual aliens running around, which obviously don't show up in earth folklore." There weren't a ton of aliens, but they did exist. Some passed for human (whether due to shapeshifting or something else), and others... well, others couldn't pass as anything but alien. "Biggest thing is to remember not to stare. Even if they're staring at you."

"I suppose that makes sense, not everything is as it seems, all that glitters and what not." Not the correct analogy but he understood what Ophion meant. Of all people Mal knew that looks were deceiving, reality just one big illusion after another.

He'd nod, internally a small cheer about his faith in there being life on other planets and the possibilities of aliens being real all along. "Right, don't stare, staring is rude, even if I'm being sized up myself. That's why peripheral vision is such a wonderful thing, oops, maybe that was supposed to be an inside thought." Mal smiled a bit, he knew he was too excited for all this, but learning about all of this was his favorite past time ever since his formative years.
