That... actually gave him a lot to work with. Probably a bit too much to work with. Ah, well, it was still better than having to go in completely blind, wasn't it? Too many people couldn't even come up with one thing they really liked, or they came up with something that basically had no practical applications. Something like 'playing video games' really didn't have any possible way to be brought into a job context.

"Alright, well - I can work with that. Cooking's a neat job, but honestly it's pretty thankless, so I can't say I'd recommend it as a profession unless you've got a real passion for it. Writing's hard to get into..." He paused, and then decided to just recommend the first thing that jumped to his mind. "Have you considered working with the park services? The island has tons of forest that needs people to patrol through. Lots of long walks through nature and all that." It was pretty mellow as far as professions went.

Mal would place his chin on one of his hands, considering it. "I do enjoy nature, that would be a good way to get some revenue, but I'm not particularly interested in pursuing it in college."

Malvoes enjoyed doing a lot of things, maybe that was the issue actually. He could see himself going down so many possible routes that deciding one was such an impossible task.

"You have a passion for history?" Mal would ask out of the blue.

Ophion was quick to mirror Malvoes's posture, resting his chin on his palm. "I was talking park work more as a job, as opposed to a degree. I imagine they probably want me to help you find a degree that you'd be interested in, but... well, if you're more interested in working, there's no issue with that." And there was nothing wrong with doing a job and then coming back to get a degree later, when he'd decided.

"Yep." He admitted, grinning at Malvoes. "Always been interested in it. It was my favorite subject, and I spent a good amount of time reading about it even before I picked a degree." He gestured to the book in front of them. "First hand accounts of history are always interesting."

"You know Ophion, that does sound nice to me actually, I'd really enjoy that kind of job. But don't get me wrong I do want to go to college and get a degree, I'm really interested in actually getting schooling now that I have a chance, just...decisions" A soft sigh would emit from his lips, it was from slight frustration at himself. Mal loved to learn, loved to know things, but tell him to choose a field and he'd flounder about.

He'd grin back at Ophion, a well, not really a flaw but a nuance that Mal has is he gets caught up in the emotions of others. "See, I love that passion! I've only had that about just learning in general to be honest. New things fascinate me, and old things and just things I don't even know." Mal's voice would start getting faster, and his hands would start joining the conversation. "I guess to really peg it all down, I've loved learning about the fictitious. Lores and myths that have intertwined with human history. Be it stories of creatures and magical artifacts or gods and curse and lost civilizations and other realms. But that may sounds a little odd, or even offensive here because this place is where all of those things I've only read about live, I mean look at me for instance I bend the very fabric of reality and create items and creatures out of nothing." Slowly running out of air in his tangent of all tangents. "Which is against so many laws of physics, but I just want to learn more about this stuff and I can't place that into any degree or job as far as I know."

Taking a deep breath he realized he just talked Ophion's ear off, "I'm really sorry about that, I get caught up in things sometimes and I can't stop."

"You could always do both. There's nothing stopping you from taking a year off to explore the great outdoors and consider what you want to do." Even if there was no monetary need, there was also no rush to get a degree. Degrees, he found, mattered a lot less on the island. The knowledge mattered, yeah, but the piece of paper? Less so. They were a smaller and more personal community, which made contacts more important.

Ahh, if only there was a degree for that. A degree for... weird myth stuff. He grinned at Malvoes's enthusiasm, waving off his apology. "Enthusiasm is good. Nothing wrong with that. Your idea isn't far off what my degree is, basically. My specialization is specifically a focus on the histories of... well, all those fictional things as far as the rest of the world knows. Mermaids and sirens and naga and all that. Dragons too - ones that don't look humanoid at all. My thesis is still getting hammered out, but basically it'll be an analysis and comparison of the parallels between the human lore for these species, and their own actual lore for themselves." There were some interesting parallels, but he wasn't quite at the writing stage yet. He still had plenty of information to gather if he wanted it to be good.

Malvoes would give a hearty laugh, "Man I love this place, if you don't know there's a lot of stigma to not going to college right after school in the US. That does sound like a great option but I will have to consider it more thoroughly." The freedom here was almost too much for Mal to bear, no pressures from his peers or acquaintances to dictate what he does with his life. And the monetary help with schooling eases everything almost completely.

Mal would enthusiastically slam his hand down, a handful of blue rose petals descending from his swipes. "That is almost exactly what I've been wanting to do! There's so much that the rest of the world doesn't know due to either other species hiding themselves or the governments hiding them or history forgetting them. I want to know about all of the cultures and the people and their history and how it has coincided with human events." Mal was starting to like Ophion, even though he was a bit older than him they seemed to share a similar interest in how the proverbial worlds of the other species have meshed with what the humans know.

Ion shook his head. "Nope, nothing like that here. We've got tons of people who have first hand experience with stuff but no degree, simply because they're so old that degrees weren't a thing when they were young." Hell, his next door neighbour back when he'd live with his parents was pushing three hundred.

Ophion jumped in surprise at the... at the roses? The roses. Suddenly there were rose petals falling from Malvoes's hands, as if he was some kind of giant shedding plant creature. The confusion no doubt showed on his face as he tried to focus his attention on what he was saying.

"Okay, sorry, that was - did you just shed rose petals?" What the hell was he looking at? He couldn't even focus on history, and that was saying something. Was he some kind of half breed mandragora? That would be nice, although he had a feeling he was getting his hopes up too high.

"I find that really nice, no real pressure, makes this process a whole lot smoother." Somewhere in Mal's mind a lot of pressure was released, being here may have more positives than it first seemed.

Mal looked at the table, after seeing and hearing the confusion from his acquaintance, to see the blue rose petals that had accumulated around his hands, some already evaporating but slowly.

"Oh yeah, I did. Sorry, it's a kind of side effect of my powers, they appear when my emotions get a bit out of hand." He'd make a small gesture over them with his right hand. As his hand combed past the petals they disappeared without a trace, when he went over the last of it a blue rose formed from a bit of light. He'd pick it up and present it to Orphion to demonstrate what he was talking about.

That was... alright, it wasn't really weird, because he'd seen a lot weirder, but surprising. He supposed he'd just gotten used to people who had literal years of power training, who didn't randomly leak blue rose petals. Or maybe it was just that the rose petals were so specific a side effect.

He had to admit he was kind of disappointed that he wasn't actually a half mandragora. He was always on the lookout for other halfs.

He reached out, taking the rose and giving it a look. "Neat. I'm guessing your power isn't actually 'makes magic blue roses' though. What can you actually do?" He paused, realizing he was probably coming off a bit strong, and settled back in his chair. "Mostly asking for work reasons. Some people are really against it, but there's honestly no shame in using your powers for job related stuff. Like, people will complain if a probability manipulator is trying to gamble, but no one's going to complain if a water wizard works for the fire department." His powers, unfortunately, were a bust. His powers were mediocre at best - nothing that was going to get him a job.

Mal would give a mischievous smirk, always enjoying the ability to show off his powers. "Of course for work reasons only. Well it goes something like this." He'd move his thumb across his hand as if he was fanning out a hand of cards, as he did so he materialized an ace for each suit of a regular deck of cards.

"I can create items almost at will, small items are easy, larger items take more time and require a bit of focus. I'm not one-hundred percent sure whether I'm manipulating atoms or just summoning them, but I can dispel them, always with the blue rose petals, which evaporate like water would." He would lay the cards out on the table, face up. "Oh I can also manipulate them, like telekinesis almost." And with a minor flourish he'd have the cards lift off the table and do somersaults and spin after each other in a circle near his head.

"On top of that I can also do some animals, with some size restrictions, and I've also got some bodily improvements, nothing too special but pretty nice in certain situations." Mal smiles, looking at the circling cards as they twirl in the air.
