Ophion spent a good amount of his time as a tour guide, but that wasn't all he did for the school. Really, he'd do pretty much anything for the school. They paid fairly well (even if it wasn't always in cash), and because they were a school, they were accommodating of the fact that he had to have time to study.

The event he was attending at the moment was a neat little thing that one of the faculty advisors had put together. It paired up undergrads with undecided majors and graduate students for some one on one advice-giving from someone who had already gotten their undergraduate degree. In return, Ophion was getting dinner at a nice restaurant with the rest of the graduate student participants. It wasn't the best paying job, but it was the sort of thing that he kind of enjoyed doing. If he got to pick his siblings, he'd probably have settled for a nice even dozen younger siblings.

He was just that kind of guy.

Ophion had grabbed a seat at one of the tables set out for the event, and was midway through a book - an old, dusty looking journal that was clearly handwritten - as he waited for an undergrad student to be assigned to him.

Well, Malvoes had a lot of good faux charisma, he found it easy to talk to people through a sort of persona that he had developed over the years, a way to make it and fake it while gaining friends, in a way. There weren't a lot of times where this charisma failed him, except large gathers and public events. What's that you say? He's at a public event with a large gathering of undecided students and graduates? Oh...fun.

Other than awkwardly shuffling about, avoiding contact with people and all around being rather miserable in a way he was glad to be here. He had a large amount of trouble deciding his major and his minor and the career he wanted, and why he was here at the college in any sense. So here's to hoping that whoever he meets is nice, he'd go to the directory table, was given a name tag and after some book shuffling they found out he was paired with a guy by the name of Ophion.

He'd walk around, not aimlessly but he was moving at a sort of a cross between a wander and an amble as he was starting to adjust to the atmosphere, his cool returning to him slowly. Walking past a few table he noticed blue eyed gentleman with a very stylish hat and blonde hair peeking out from it, he was also wearing a name tag that said Ophion. Well, now or never.

Mal would walk up to Ophion, approaching from the opposite side of the table that he was sitting. Stopping there he'd lightly clear his throat, politely getting his attention if he was too in depth with the book he was reading.

"Hello, my name is Malvoes, Malvoes Boran, I've been assigned to you." He'd say this with a light voice, extending his right hand to shake with him.

On the mainland (so he'd been told, since he'd never actually been), people often held off on going to school at all. Schools on the mainland were expensive, and it was a profoundly silly thing to spend large amounts of money to get a degree in something you weren't even sure you liked. The issue was essentially a non-issue on the island, where more or less anyone was capable of getting free tuition. It took a lot to not qualify. Realistically speaking, Manta Carlos suffered from the opposite problem. There were tons of people in university that had absolutely no idea what they wanted to do with themselves, who were attending because it was easier than getting a job. Plenty would drop out before their second year, having decided to go into the workforce instead.

His student arrived not long after the event started, grabbing a seat and offering his hand for Ophion to take. He did, reaching out and giving it a firm shake. He ran a bit cooler than average, but nothing particularly unusual or noteworthy.

"And I'm Ophion Hughes." He offered, introducing himself properly. "I've finished up my undergraduate in History, and now I'm a graduate student... also in history." He had a passion for history, so what? "So, I suppose I should start by asking how long you've been on the island - you a more recent arrival?" The truth of the matter was that his advice would vary depending on if someone was a mainlander or not.

Mal would smile politely, returning the same amount of firmness in the handshake as he made himself comfortable in the chair. Listening intently of course, he liked learning about people, where they've been, where they're going, and where they are now.

"Ah, a historian, those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it, or so they say." This was more of an idle thought but there was pure interest in Mal's eyes, he was very curious about whether history here on the islands included things people in the rest of the world wouldn't learn.

"Honestly, I've only been here a few weeks. My class administrator gave me a list of general classes that would be useful in practically any career but I was told to consider what to do." He mentally scolded himself for adding unneeded information, that was almost obvious due to him being there. Ah well, he'd glance at the book Ophion was reading, it looked old.

"More like, those who ignore history are likely to wonder why they just got bitten in half by an angry dragon because they brought up a sensitive issue." He said with a small laugh. History mattered a whole hell of a lot when you were dealing with species that had memories that lasted so much longer than humans.

"New arrivals always have a tough time on the island. There's a lot to adapt to. Parts of it are pretty much the same as the mainland, but other parts... well, there's nothing like it."

The book in front of him had no title on the cover. It appeared to be hand written, and looked a whole lot like someone's old journal. "What were you thinking of doing before you got here? That's always a good place to start."

Mal would chuckle along with Ophion, not entirely sure whether or not he was joking. Or whether or not he knew that the mainlands don't know about the existence of dragons. Also, dragons.

"Like, powers and magic, species of sentient beings other than human, private schooling which isn't all that hard to cope with but it's new, and so on." Giving examples of things he has had to handle since he arrived here.

He'd chuckle a small bitter laugh, "I was gonna work and help my mother, eventually get a house for the both of us and work some more. This-" Motioning a bit to the entire area "-was a bit of a left turn for me. And I don't mean just the increase in supernatural life hazards."

He was only half kidding. The idea of someone getting eaten over that kind of argument wasn't unheard of, even if he'd never heard of it directly happening before. People got upset over old historical things all the time, and those were just humans, many of which didn't directly recall the things they were getting angry about.

"Yep." He agreed. "It's all pretty weird, so I've been told." He had no direct experience himself, however. He'd been born and raised on the island, and what was unusual to so many people was totally normal to him.

"Well, what kind of work were you hoping to pick up? I'm obviously not familiar with your family situation, but the island's got pretty good... man, forgetting what it's called. Backups, basically, for people who are poor or sick or whatever. So at least there's not really a risk of becoming homeless or anything." The idea that people could just not have a home was so baffling to him.

Odd sentence, maybe he was a local, that didn't sound impossible, plenty of people here. He found it interesting though, Mal was rather curious about his thoughts on the...mainlanders and their customs and such but perhaps another time.

"Well, I never put much thought into it honestly. I never really considered my own wants just was happy with anything I got as long as I got payed." He pondered this, it was never really a concern to him what he wanted to do. Of course his mother was always telling Malvoes that he should follow his dreams but he never really cared to think of what he wanted. He was just happy to make it by with his mom.

Ahh, there were a lot of those. People who didn't give much thought to what they wanted to do, because until their arrival on the island, the only thing that mattered was what they needed to do. There was a lot of that. People who were weird and unusual on the mainland often spend a lot of their time trying to appear normal, and didn't have time for other stuff.

"Alright, probably better to work off hobbies then. You have any hobbies? Or - how about this, what's your favorite class in school?" Everyone had a favorite class. Well, a favorite class that wasn't lunch.

"Well, I like to read, fiction, lore, legends stuff like that, I like to know about mythology and the like...well I guess not all myths were legends now. Other than that I like to cook, and write, and play video games, and go on walks through just about anywhere. Most of my classes are just basic ones, nothing I really enjoy." Mal would say this all with a bit of regret in his voice. He was a fairly average person, nothing too peculiar and no interests too extraordinary, he had almost no strong passions.

Indecision was an all too prominent flaw for him, he had terrible trouble with choices, especially large ones like this. He'd give a sigh, a bit of a defeated frown growing on his face.
