"Only child too," Jude confirmed. "And really just the one parent. My mom left before I - well, I mean, when I was born, so it was always just me and my dad. I used to wonder about that a lot. About what, uh, normal family relationships were like."

He couldn't help but smile a bit when Gabe looked down at his phone.

"I think she's got a pretty good reason to worry, considering what happened to Halcyon. Did she even knew you did the villain thing?"

"I told her once we made it here. She was beyond pissed."

Gabriel laughed, remembering the night after when they had been sitting together in the refugee camp and he had confessed to what he had been up to. "I almost would have rather have been back with Charlotte getting set on fire versus being there with her that night. But, I had to tell her. No more threats or danger or people breathing down our back. It was... nice. I feel like we got a lot closer after that and she wants to reopen her flower shop here on the island, so helping her out with that is kind of the dream."

"As for 'normal' family relationships, I wouldn't know. No idea who or what my father was; I don't even know his name. He's the one taboo topic in our household and I honestly don't care enough to try and figure it out. I am a little curious about his ancestry, though. I can tell I'm not full-blood Latino, that's for sure."

He'd been right when they said they had a lot in common, although he hadn't known even the half of it. He found himself smiling without even realizing it, mentally running through the similarities.

"Similar enough. My dad found out I was doing the hero thing when he walked in on me, ah, helping myself to some of his gear. He was going to give me the fifth degree, but then I saved his life so he was doing the whole 'well, I GUESS I'll let you do it' thing. Plus, he's planning to start up a restaurant here. Or take one over. Something like that."

The difference didn't particularly matter. What mattered was him in charge, not who started it.

Even their histories though.

"I mean, kind of the same. I never asked about my mom, and my dad never talked about her. I grew up having absolutely no idea, and I only found out the truth like... in the last year. Since the hero thing happened. I actually spend a brief period where I was half convinced I was a clone."

He basically hadn't stopped grinning the whole conversation.

"You could do one of those... genetic testing things? To get an idea of your makeup."

"I could do the genetic testing, but if I did, I'd talk to my mom about it first. I'd rather not go behind her back after everything that's happened. I don't like a lot of the secrecy that we had back in Halcyon. Secret identities, secrets from family, just... it's too much. Too many ways for people to get hurt or worse."

Gabe scratched his cheek absently, trying to think of more to talk about. The restaurant might be a good start? "So, what kind of restaurant would your dad run if he opens it? Would you want to work for him there or just stay away from the family business?"

He could undetstand that. Secrets had cost him his arm. They'd almost cost him his life. Jude and secrets were not on the best of terms.

"An Italian place," Jude said. "He used to run one in Halcyon City. Back at home I'd have said I wanted not part in any of his businesses, but here... I think I'd help out. I don't have to sleep, so I could easily do stuff like night prep. Like, I'm not a chef, but it's not like it's particularly difficult to dice ingredients or anything like that. I'd want to help out. To... make sure it's okay. And just..."

Jude scratched at the back of his neck almost absentmindedly. "To be around him, I guess? To be there and see him more."

"Italian? Sounds delicious. Pasta and meats and cheeses."

Gabe grinned, picking at his sandwich a little more. He enjoyed talking with Angelo, but hunger had definitely been winning out today. He had only had a quick bite for breakfast, and lunch had been nothing more than a day out in the sun. He hadn't used any of his ability today, so at least he wasn't utterly exhausted. But at the same time, he was very glad he had accepted the offer Angelo had given.

"There's nothing wrong with wanting to spend more time with your dad. I think it's very much like you, Angelo. You are one of those people who have so much kindness to give out to the world." Gabe had begun to blush again and let out a small chuckle. "Now I sound like one of those cheesy romance novels using lines like that. Point is, you're good people, Angelo."

He totally did, and Jude found himself trying to hide his blush by taking a big bite of the sandwich. Not blushing. Just eating a sandwich. Probably got some sauce on his cheeks or something, right? But definitely not blushing because he'd just been slammed with a pretty big compliment.

"I don't think I'm anything special," he admitted after a moment. "I just had luckier circumstances than most. Like, that's the only thing that decided which side of the law we were on back in Halcyon city."

He had at least a general idea of why Gabe had gone to that life. To pay his mother's debts, or something like that. Loan sharks. Something to that effect, and it was something Jude had felt obviously awkward about. For some reason he couldn't figure out, almost every one of his friends had been born either below the poverty line or pretty dang close to it.

Gabe took another meatball and dropped it into his mouth (with some minor difficulty, these things were freakin' huge) and ate it and made sure his mouth was totally clean before talking again. "I mean, sure, you were 'luckier'. But it could have still been reversed regardless. You, being of affluent nature, could have been bad in order to gain attention of your father or decided you wanted to hoard even more wealth to yourself. I could have been more heroic, becoming your friendly neighborhood tree man or something ridiculous. What happened in Halcyon can stay there; we're here now and starting over."

He paused, looking over to Angelo with a small frown. "You are special, Angelo. At least, you're very special to me. You're one of my closest friends, you reached out to me when I was barely settled here, helped me feel comfortable. You've been nothing but kind even though we were once on opposite sides, and you even asked me out on a date, which I'm still flustered about." Cheeks red, Gabe couldn't help but start to smile wider and wider as he spoke.

"So, thank you. Really."

Okay, yep. Gabe was really good at flustering him, and Jude wasn't the kind of person who got flustered particularly quickly. His cheeks were good and red, and no amount of sub consumption was going to cover that up. It was just embarrassing.

Jude reached up, rubbing absentmindedly at his neck once more to try and hide his embarassment.

"I... guess?" He said, not quite willing to actual argue. He didn't want to agree, but he couldn't fight it either.

"It's just good to have a fresh start. To do the... normal teenage thing. To join clubs and get part time jobs and have normal teenage problems. Did you, uh, date back in Halcyon?"

For all the past is in the past, Jude couldn't help but wonder.

"A little. I've been on maybe... three dates? They never really went anywhere, though. Between the villain thing and other trials of life, I just... didn't keep any together. Not to say that I wasn't interested, but I had... no, have some issues. As teenagers do."

Gabe laughed, but there was some hesitation to his voice. Talking about himself had always seemed to be a difficult subject because he had always felt so boring, so insignificant in the grand scheme of things. In a world of superpowers, Gabe had been honestly fine being alone. He dreamed of romance and fantasy, but he never believed those things were truly achievable. But Manta Carlos was proving to be a very good start for an ideal life. He had friends and possible relationships, no loan sharks to fight with, and there wasn't a giant monster rampaging into the city every other month or some other nonsense.

"What about you? I'm sure that you were quite the popular man back in Halcyon."
