"At this point," Jude said with a small laugh. "I'm of the opinion that literally no one knows how flirting actually works, and we're all just faking it." Maaaaaaybe Alma knew about it. Maybe. But even then he wasn't sold on that, because she tended to fly by the seat of her pants on things too.

Neither of them quite knew it, but of the two of them, Jude actually had less experience.

"Being honest, it's new to me too," Jude admitted. "I didn't even know poly was a... thing back in Halcyon City. I only really found out once I was here, when other people explained it to me. I think it's... I mean, it's a fair idea? It's not for everyone, but I'm really not a jealous person, so it works for me."

Jude felt relief flood through him when Gabe actually said yes. A date. Not quite dating, but dating was probably a bit beyond things considering it had only been around a month. Getting to know each other worked, and he grinned, seeming to visibly sag back into his chair a bit.

"I was putting like, fifty percent odds on 'I mean, you're really nice Angelo, but also I don't like guys', so this went pretty well."

"That makes sense. Apparently, we as a species are terrible at romance but somehow make it work."

Gabriel let out a small laugh and leaned forward, seeming to also relax as the conversation shifted a little. The idea of actually going on a date seemed so exciting yet so horrifying. How was he supposed to act? What to do or say or where to go? The thoughts were distracting, so he quickly focused on Angelo's words instead. Which were surprising, to say the least.

"Really? I've thought about it, but I always worried about the whole jealousy thing or being a third wheel so it never really stuck out to me. And..." Gabe gave a soft smile, sliding his arms into his lap. "I wouldn't mind dating either men or women, but I kinda-prefer-guys-because-I-find-them-sexier-overall." He quickly rushed out the last part in a quiet tone, trying not to get the attention of the man behind the counter or anyone nearby.

So this wasn't a date, technically. He had asked him out to ask him out, but since they hadn't established that this was going to be a date, it technically wasn't, until Jude actually said it.

"So is this our first date? For tracking purposes," Jude said, getting up to retrieve their food when the man behind the counter called their names. He grabbed Gabe's too, setting it down before taking his seat again.

"I mean, if you'd asked me what I was in Halcyon city, I'd have said I was straight, but that was more... as a default thing? I just didn't think about it, because I didn't think I'd really ever get to date anyone. Now that I'm here and I've had time to think about it... I guess I like both? But different things in both. What I like in guys and what I like in girls are kind of different."

Jude didn't feel particularly odd about it, but he was at least keeping his voice down out of respect for Gabe's feelings.

Gabe gave a small 'thank you' as Angelo brought the meatball stuffed sandwich and set it down in front of him. The advert wasn't kidding with how much meat had been stuffed inside of the bread. The cheese was finely melted, and the poor boy's stomach couldn't wait. A low growl reverberated from his stomach, but Gabriel couldn't care less. Slowly opening his mouth and revealing his full set of pointed teeth, the teen quickly bit into the messy sandwich and pulled a chunk into his mouth to be devoured. Some of the sauce hadn't quite made it into his mouth, leaving what could like like a messy trail of blood down the side of his mouth.

He stared at Jude, swallowing the bite and wiping his face quickly. "I don't know if this is our first 'date'. I-If you want to call it that, I'm okay with that." He stuttered, mentally cursing himself at the realization. "But what do you look for in guys versus girls? I'm kind of curious now."

"Uh, body types is the first thing that comes to mind I guess?" Angelo said, sounding not at all sure. His eyes were definitely watching the teeth, but he didn't seem all that bothered. He'd been around Smokey, for one. Or Centi. Or... well, a lot of people with very unusual eating styles.

"I guess I like girls more, uh..." You know what, scratch that, he couldn't think of a better way to say it. "More traditionally feminine, I guess? Where as I prefer guys more athletic. Not like, bulky, but fit. I guess it's mostly what I was around." He wasn't exactly big on muscular women.

"What about you?"

Gabriel looked at Angelo curiously for a moment, unsure of what to say before laughing. His teeth had a slight stain of red but it was light enough to be not immediately obvious. "I'm... not sure, honestly. I think it comes down to personality a lot of the time? I like people who are a little more calm, you know? With how busy Halcyon seemed to be I always ended getting drawn towards calm people. People who made me feel safe to be around. Just was kind of hard since most people see the carnivorous tree guy and think I'm a cannibal or something so very few felt safe around me."

"But,"
he sighed, "I think I just like nice people the most. People who don't expect things from you, or look down on you with pity or something. People who want to be around you because they like being around you."

"People like you, Angelo."

"If we're being honest," Jude said with a small smile on his lips, "I think teh idea of a tree that eats meat is kind of hilarious, actually. Like, you say 'plant powers' and everyone is like 'oh vegetarian' and then oops, nope. Probably scared a lot of people back in Halcyon, but what Alma said before was true--no one cares here. There's way weirder stuff here on the island. People with too many teeth in their mouth. People with no teeth at all. One person I met had like... lamprey mouth. Like, perfectly round teeth."

That one had been kind of freaky, if he was being honest.

He listened to the explanation of just who he liked, and... well, he could understand that. To not want pity. His wasn't quite like that, but... similar enough, and he nodded.

"I get that," he said. "I used to worry a lot about if people liked me because of me, or if they were treating me that way because of my dad. That was part of the reason I ran off to do the hero thing... because any reactions I got were reactions just to me."

Gabe grinned back, kind of understanding Angelo's point of view on the 'tree eating meat' thing. It was kind of funny, in a sick sort of way. But back in Halcyon, it hadn't nearly been as nice. People just stared, made snarky comments, even though there were other heroes and villains who were less humanoid in appearance. Gabe wasn't exactly a threatening person normally, so maybe it was just easier to push him down? He didn't really want to think about it too much.

"Sounds like the hero thing worked out well for you, then." Gabe plucked another meatball with his fingers and quickly ate it, trying to keep his mouth shut as tight as possible while he devoured the delicious orb of meat and marinara. "But if it makes you feel better, I like you for you. I barely know anything about your dad beyond when he was in the news and your... house... blew... up." He trailed off, deciding that the ceiling was very interesting and stared at it. Awkward foot-in-mouth moment for sure. First date? Talk about how your date's father almost got assassinated. That's not weird at all.

"I kind of figured," Jude said with a small laugh. It was obvious Gabe was awkward, but Jude really didn't seem bothered by it. It felt distant. It felt far away. He'd made his peace with what had happened at the house.

"That was me, actually," Jude said, pausing to take a bite of his own sub. He should have gotten a bag of chips or something to go with it. "The guy doing it didn't realize my dad had a son, so when I walked in, he thought it was my dad. Blew the whole house up. That was when I lost my arm, actually. Kind of messed everything up for me, at least in the short term."

He paused, staring into space as he sort of puzzled it out.

"I guess it worked out in the end. My dad and I don't really have any more secrets now. We're in a better place then we were before. No more doubts about does my dad really love me after all that."

Gabriel's head whiplashed so quickly back to staring at Angelo, his neck let out a crack as he looked forward.

Amazing. Not only did the teen talk about his date's father having his house blown up in an assassination attempt, but it was the very same incident that cost Angelo his arm. If his foot could be any farther in his mouth, Gabe would be eating his knee currently. He waited until Angelo finished before letting out a small sigh. "The explosion sounded awful, I'm sorry to hear that that's how you lost your arm. It's nice to hear that you and your dad got close. I don't really know a lot about him since he was never part of society I worried about but it's good to have a strong relationship with at least one parent. My mom and I are super close since I'm her only child so we get along well."

He glanced down at his pocket where his phone rested and gave a faint smile. "Although she does worry a lot, as you've seen whenever I leave the house."
