"If you ever need an internship, I am always available," Yoka said, hesitating on the sidewalk for a moment as she reached into her purse for the small folding case that she kept her business cards in. She didn't sense his unease with her mistake, but she elaborated anyway with a small laugh. "It's so hard to tell age and grade on this island. I could guess almost everywhere else, but there's nothing like insulting a 2000 year old vampire high school student."

She chatted with him while she looked, and meanwhile the shadow from the piano loomed above them.

"California is such a beautiful state," Yoka said. "I've visited Los Angelos many times, but I really prefer northern California--the way those mountains hit the coast line? Mm! So serene."

The cabel wires from the piano snapped.

Just as she pulled the case of cards out, the metal slipped from her hand and onto the side walk, skittering away.

The dark shadow over Yoka and Murphy grew and grew.

"Oh goodness," Yoka said. "That's just my luck."

She took a few steps and bent over, her round bottom sticking up in the air and her skirt riding up a little bit as she picked up the amber case.

The piano crashed only a few inches behind Murphy and Yoka.

"Well," Yoka said, turning around and looking at the broken piano. "Someone is having a shitty day. Are you okay?"

In that moment, everything went white for Murphy. The sounds of the city were completely drowned out by the pounding of his own heartbeat and the deafening crash of the piano behind them. What... what the hell had happened?

He remembered Yuka dropping the card case, and bending over to pick it up. Admittedly he'd taken a moment from watching the piano to admire the view, and in that moment of distraction everything had happened at once. He could almost feel the wire giving way as the instrument plummeted towards them and despite readying himself for it, he'd just froze. He'd accepted, at that point, that he was probably going to die and had begun cursing his luck when something had intervened.

It wasn't anything identifiable or concrete, but he could have sworn something nudged the piano, tilting it just far enough away from them to avoid injury or worse. Something small and scarce but powerful and that ran countenance to his own ability. Was that... good luck?

Before he could analyze any further, reality came crashing back in upon a wave of shock. Murphy clutched his chest as his heart pounded against in a painful staccato. "I...I... Jesus Christ!" He began shaking as adrenaline surged through his veins, "I'm f-fine, what of you... I mean I'm alright, no injuries. You alright?"

Christ he was babbling, he needed to get a hold of himself. As he stepped carefully away from the wreckage he closed his eyes and began the familiar sequencing that he'd practiced for years.

1,1,2,3...Breathe, breathe! Remember the lessons. 55,89,144... Don't panic. Think, focus, analyze. 2584,4181,6765... The danger has passed, no one was hurt, don't let the fear control you.

Almost fifteen seconds later he reopened his eyes and had calmed considerably. "That was... uncomfortably close, but I don't seem to be injured." He glanced skywards, the workers were shouting down at them and he waved back that they were fine. "Could have been a really bad bit of bad luck though eh?"

He looked like he needed a moment, so Yoka rubbed a small circle in the center of his back, patted it once, and then gave him some space to breath.

She waved up at the workers and then picked up her case and tucked it back into her purse, and tucked that particular card into the hemline of her shirt. It didn't seem like the appropriate moment to hand it to him, but she didn't want to have to go fishing for her case again, either.

Yoka picked up her coffee and took a sip. He seemed to be regaining his composure.

"I am glad you are alright," Yoka said. "I'm also fine, although quite hungry. There's nothing like a near death experience to make you want a panini, am I right?"

She laughed, but when he made the comment about luck, Yoka's face faltered.

"Oh, I suppose that could have been some bad luck," Yoka said, shrugging. "It seems like it's a lot more unlucky for the person who ordered the piano, or those workers."

She hesitated for a second, and then shrugged, figuring what the hell. "People around me tend to be pretty lucky, but only if they're on my good side."

If they're on her bad side it's not like anything unlucky happens...only what Yoka herself does for spite.

Her complete composure worried him almost as much as the piano had. Half a ton of ivory and wood had missed them by less than a foot, and she was just as cheerful as she had been before it had plunged. What kind of life did she lead that this was commonplace?

Well, no use worry about it now.

A brow was raised when she mentioned that she generated good luck to those around her. "Good luck? It must be nice to have a power that makes you popular."

The words came out with a sudden bitterness that he hadn't been expecting and he shifted, realizing his faux pas. He tried to cover his embarrassment with a small cough but couldn't keep a touch of scarlet from reaching his cheeks. He thought he'd gotten over his hostility towards those with opposing powers years ago, looked like old habits died hard.

"Sorry." he mumbled, "I just... I mean... we should check out that building yeah?" Murphy tried to gloss over his outburst with a series of questions. "When did you graduate? In what field? What kind of work do you do? Must be doing good business if they're looking to expand."

He wasn't being the most socially graceful creature in the world but he tried to be friendly. She seemed nice and hey, a potential internship could eventually turn into a job once his schooling was over.

She didn't miss his hostility, but Yoka's response was to give a dry, humorless laugh.

"It might seem so, if that was what actually made me popular," Yoka admitted. "It was hard work securing my position. A lot of the work was degrading, and if I had less of an opinion of myself, it would have been easy to believe I was only the sum of how other peoples perceived my powers. Please do not make the same mistake I almost did."

She started to walk back down the street, continuing the conversation by answering his questions, though she did need a moment to think of a few of the answers so she would hesitate and take a sip of her coffee.

"I graduated...oh goodness, now that's a good question," Yoka said, frowning. Mostly, she was talking to herself to try and muse out the date. "I'm sure it's on record somewhere. Maybe 1756? 1856 seems much too late, but I believe I was still trading spices around 1650.."

She shook her head, running her hand through her long hair again.

"Regardless of the date, I've graduated from the academy on a few occasions. My degrees are in Business Management, Finances, Economics, and Performance Art. Right now, I own a series of businesses and yes, work is going quite well. Unfortunately,"

Yoka motioned to the strip around them.

"When I started my business, this was not here. But times change, and real estate changes, and I must adapt. I don't want to move my original business, but I do want to open a second one down here. The key to thriving on this island is to not compete, but to compliment. "

Yoka tried to find a way to explain to him what she meant.

"Are you fond of ladies, Murphy?" Yoka asked suddenly. She spun on her heel to face him, and her gaze was a little bit mischievous. The piano had given her an idea.

Her powers couldn't compete with his--his bad luck was far, far stronger than her good luck. But her good luck could compliment his and Yoka had an idea.

Her words had the ring of experience in them, and Murphy nodded in concession. It was hard not to think of himself as just a bundle of bad luck but she made her point well. He was a person before he was a...well, superhuman sounded pompous, preternatural maybe?

His hand dipped into his pocket and grabbed a small electrum coin out of habit and began to toy with it as she continued, nearly fumbling it when she mentioned her date of graduation. Well, he'd certainly been operating under an incorrect assumption. Her list of degrees was equally impressive, as was the fact that she owned not one but several successful businesses on such an isolated island.

He looked around at the strip and tried to imagine what it must have been like over a hundred years ago. It occurred to him that Technology had advanced so quickly over the past century that the development and advancement of the business center must have happened in a proverbial blink of an eye to someone who had been around as long as she.

"I...what?!" Her sudden question caught him off guard and he found himself fumbling for words. "Well yeah, I mean of course. Admittedly everyone else on the island seems to be built like supermodels so it's... well it's hard to approach but...God damn it I'm babbling. Why do you ask?"

Yoka's grin widened.

"Let's take a detour," she said, linking her arm with his. "The super model look is fake on practically everyone here. Myself included. Glamour is such an easy and cheap trick, so I can't really blame anyone for using it."

She was leading him to the restaurant she had in mind for paninis, deciding it would be worth it to show him what his powers could do in a controlled setting. Bad luck with good luck could be a fantastic deal maker.

"Can you...control your luck?" Yoka asked. "Like, can you pick the target, or is it more of a radius thing?"

She knew he didn't have to touch the person because he hadn't touched the piano, although truthfully maybe it was supposed to have hit her and it was only her dumb luck that it didn't.

"I ask because I want to show you what you can gain from being unlucky, because there is so much open to you, dear Murphy," she grinned.

Murphy shook his head as she guided them towards the restaurant. "It's an aura by nature and the only effect I can have on it is amplification. That said, it isn't guaranteed that anyone other than myself will be affected."

He was intrigued by the idea of bad luck working to his advantage. Gods knew he'd tried to wrangle it beforehand, but maybe her good luck could do something with it?

"Well, if you've got an idea I'm all for it. Just... be aware yeah? Wouldn't want to catch ya in an accident again."

He had a number of questions for her but couldn't figure out how to word them. How old was she? What was she? Was luck her only power? Did she have full control over it? Ah well, there would be time to embarrass himself with those questions later.

"I think we should be okay," Yoka said, musing over his words. So he couldn't direct it, and it was just as likely to affect him as anyone else.

Yoka was banking on this being altered by her presence. If worst came to worst, she was still sure they'd come out okay, even if they didn't come out unscathed or ontop like she planned.

Behind her illusion, her tails waggled in excitement.

The restaurant was a small, chic-looking place, with a mixed theme that catered to both college students and young professionals. In other words, ti catered to people trying to make money who were in horribly in debt.

It was one of Yoka's best hunting grounds for new employees.

Her eyes found a pretty blond in the corner. Her eyes were red rimmed and she had three empty paper cups of coffee infront of her, but she still looked exhausted. She had an open book and a stack of notes, and the facial expression that belonged to someone who didn't think their day could get any worse.

"She will do, yes?" Yoka said, tilting her head to the girl. "If you find someone down on their luck and take them to rock bottom, there is so much more you can offer them in return."

Yoka flashed him a wicked grin and said, "Why don't you go sit at a table near her and I will get us something to drink? What's the worst that can happen?"

Murphy winced at her choice of words. He'd uttered them himself enough times to know that inevitably, the question would be answered.

He gave the harried woman Yoka motioned to a quick glance. She had the harried look of a student desperately trying to complete a final paper on time and from the subtle shaking in her hands, she'd been substituting coffee for sleep. For the first time in a while he felt a pang of sympathy for her plight.

"You sure this isn't gonna, ya know, completely ruin her life?" he asked quietly, sliding into a booth next to the woman. "I mean, I'm all for testing things out but-" Ah, she'd already started moving to get drinks.

Out of habit he glanced around the restaurant and tried to figure out what was most likely to go wrong. It was a trendy little place. The kind that you found near college campuses all over the world. Classy enough for potential professionals yet cheap enough for the students. This kind of place had the potential for all kinds of problems. Glasses could spill, bussers could trip and drop plates, wrong food for him was a given... well, here was to hoping that Yoka's ability would at least keep him from dying in a horrible and unpredictable manner.
