Lochlann had squirmed under her, and Adelene didn't know what else there was for her to do, except to hold his restrained hand, tangling their fingers together as he closed his eyes and Dr. Hart started working.

Adelene was biting her lip hard, and unconsciously. She watched despite the fear, as the doctor inserted a tube into him, and as Lochlann looked so horribly scared in bed. Her heartbeat's become even faster, and she had to stifle her own breaths because she was worried she was going to start sobbing if she didn't.

"I'm just right here," she spoke shakily, but her hold on his hand was firm, as her thumb rubbed its back in circles. She wanted him to at least know that she was there with him through this.

Dr. Hart sounded like he was trying to start a conversation, but Adelene only looked at him and shook her head. "Don't, please," she couldn't speak that well while trying to hold tears in. Besides, how can she engage in a casual conversation under this circumstance? She couldn't speak anymore. One more try, and she might break and start to cry.

Lochlann was so grateful that she was here. He would have told her so, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t move, he couldn’t talk, and he was forced to just lay there while Aiden snaked the tube down his throat and into his stomach.

It didn’t exactly hurt—he just felt like had had to gag and couldn’t—but it was the accumulation of all his worst fears that had him shaking and whimpering. He’d gone someplace dark, and Addy was the only thing that kept bringing him back.

"I'm just right here," she spoke shakily, but her hold on his hand was firm, as her thumb rubbed its back in circles. She wanted him to at least know that she was there with him through this.

He opened his eyes to look at her for a minute, but his eyes were watering from the discomfort and he couldn’t stand the fact that she was here, that she had to see him like this, and that this was even happening to begin with.

"Don't, please,"

Aiden gave her a nod, and injected the saline, then beginning the draw. He pulled up a chair next to the bed and gave her a gentle touch on the shoulder, encouraging her to sit down.

It’ll take about an hour or so,” Aiden told her. ”Listen I…I don’t know if you should take him home with you.”

He hesitated, then walked out of the door, leaving them alone for a few minutes. Lochlann trembled under her touch, squeezing her hand tighter, trying to tell her he was sorry. Aiden returned with a coffee and held it out to Addy. ”You look like you need this.”

It was probably already midnight, or later than that. But Adelene couldn't feel how tired she was, despite the hours of watching over Lochlann, crying for him, dealing with the staff, dealing with the stress. She couldn't feel the cold either, despite not having anything over or under her t-shirt. Her heart was racing and the faster blood flow somehow kept her body slightly warmer.

She was thankful it was only going to take an hour, but at the same time, she felt so sorry for Lochlann, for having to be like this in the meantime. She eyed Dr. Hart for a moment, before deciding to pull the chair even closer to Lochlann, and she'd sit down and hold Lochlann's hand even tighter.

Dr. Hart left. Adelene found herself absentmindedly bending down to kiss Lochlann's hand, and without anyone else around, without other sounds and movements, things were sinking into her much quicker and much more horribly. Her eyes started to sting as they watered. She tried blinking and wiping them away, but they still stung.

She felt Lochlann react, and she squeezed his hand back to let him know she wasn't going to leave him.

She didn't notice Dr. Hart's return until the doctor held out a cup of coffee for her. She looked at him, and then at the cup, before taking it carefully with one hand. She wasn't going to let Lochlann go.

"Thank you," she mumbled, before taking a sip. And then she rested the cup on her lap. "Also, for letting me stay with him."

She remembered just then what the doctor said about taking him home. She bit her lip for a moment, before deciding she'd ask about it.

"Doctor..." Despite her hoarse voice. "...what was that you were saying about taking him home?"

"Doctor..." Despite her hoarse voice. "...what was that you were saying about taking him home?"

Aiden checked on Lochlann and then leaned against the wall, his arms crossed. His face took on the look of someone

”Do you want to be here again in six months?” Aiden asked her. He didn’t mean to be blunt, but he wanted her to understand how serious he was. ”Because it’s like clockwork with him, and every time it gets worse. First there was the hurricane, then there was the incident with Miss Simmonds, the rehab, the suicide attempt, and now the overdose. Miss Cross, I am speaking frankly with you because you deserve to know, and since you’re on the paperwork I can speak to you about the things he won’t.”

He realized the comment might be in relatively poor taste given that Lochlann currently couldn’t really say or do anything, so Aiden sighed. His voice was gentler now. Adelene, Lochlann is addicted to the worst sort of thing and if you go home with him, you will get hurt. It’s just a matter of when.

Lochlann couldn’t argue. His fingers went limp in hers save for the trembling. This was his own personal hell and Lochlann was getting ready to lose the only hope for redemption he had left.

It was like the doctor's words were the only thing needed to push Adelene to her limit.

She silently listened to Dr. Hart, and it didn't exactly show on her face how her mind suddenly started feeling unsettled, panicked, and then she started to worry even more, even though she didn't want to believe that things would get worse. Never mind the past incidents, she was afraid of what happens in the future. And her stomach turned and her chest tightened as her mind was filled with the worst thoughts.

She lowered her head and covered the cup's rim with her hand when she couldn't hold it in anymore. She started crying, her sobs soft but very noticeable against the silence.

She was getting drained, physically, mentally, emotionally. She was stressed and tired and she was crying again. But her hold on Lochlann's hand didn't loosen.

She couldn't answer the doctor, however. She couldn't fight the sobs, she couldn't speak. It was painful in the chest, and any attempt to utter a word would surely just make her crying worse.

He was the worst thing on the face of the earth. Lochlann had killed and eaten multiple people. He was a murderer, a monster, and no matter what he did, he couldn’t find the one thing that would make him feel horrible when he ate someone. The guilt and self-disgust came after, but it was nothing compared to the self-loathing he felt now knowing that he was the reason Addy was crying, and there was nothing he could do to make him better.

His heart was lagging in his chest but each thump said to say Trapped. Trapped. Trapped.

He’d never wanted to die, but he wished it would stop so he didn’t have to listen to it remind him that he was a monster with every beat.

Aiden was quiet. He couldn’t leave the room to give her the privacy he wanted to, so he busied himself checking the progress of the procedure. Then, hesitantly, Aiden reached out and touched Addy’s back, rubbing the small of it in small circles with one hand while he pulled his smart phone out with the number. He sent a quick text, and then leaned down to whisper next to her.

“I called you a cab, Miss Cross,” Aiden said. “It’ll be here when this is over. Go home and get some sleep.”

Lochlann pulled his fingers from hers.

He wondered how he'd ever sleep again, because every dream was going to be filled with the soft, quiet sounds of her crying.
