It was just a kiss, how did it end up like this?

Lochlann did not often spend a lot of time in the underground unless he was looking for something he couldn't find anywhere else. This afternoon, Lochlann was here looking for information.

The narrow cobblestone streets made his foot steps echo of the brick and stone buildings as he walked by. The high buildings blocked out the sun, or what passed for the sun through the overcast winter sky. Lochlann was wearing only a thin jacket despite the weather. There were dark bags under his eyes, too, and he seemed stiff, as though he'd been spending too many nights outside of a bed.

He approached an alleyway when he thought he saw someone.

"Hey," Lochlann said.

This was the place.

Of course, Lochlann didn't realize that the person in the alley way was not who he was supposed to be meeting.

Yu Ling Lu

Yu Ling was having so much fun exploring this new place (Mantou Galong? Manchu Caatos?). It was too bad that YeYe couldn’t come with them to explore. Oh well, they’d see YeYe and Lu-BaBa in three weeks and then they could show them all the fun things they had found on the island. In the meantime, Yu Ling would continue seeking out all the things the island had to offer to them!

Skipping down cobblestone street, Yu Ling finished off the salted caramel flavored soft serve ice cream they were holding.

“Hmm. Yu Ling doesn’t quite like salted caramel. Next time Yu Ling will have soda flavored ice cream. Then maybe try new flavor again?” they mused as they polished off the remaining cake cone in a few bites. Yu Ling loved trying out new flavors in their soft serve and popsicles. Which reminded them, this island was full of new and interesting beings. Maybe there would be special new flavors they could find and try out in their ice cream?

“Much new! So ice cream! Wow!~”

Yu Ling threw up their arms in glee as they sang out the meme. They truly did enjoy Doge so much!

Today was such a great day! Not only was it winter, which was the best time for an undead body, but it was an overcast sky as well! Less sun meant it was even colder, another boon for Yu Ling’s undead body. Speaking of their undead body, Yu Ling needed to get some Qi to fuel themselves soon. But before that, there was something that smelled interesting in the alleyway on their left!

Bounding over to the dark alley, Yu Ling skipped inside to investigate what was letting out such a nice fruity smell. Perhaps a new ingredient for their ice cream?

Being only just 3 years old undead and spending much of the time sheltered and taken care of by their maker, Yu Ling wasn’t as attuned to the minor details that preceded a Qi deprivation blackout. Then again, even if they were they probably still wouldn’t pay much attention to it because they couldn’t imagine what was so bad about it. They’ve always woken up in the past to delicious Qi anyways. In any case, Yu Ling was wholly unconcerned as they passed out in the middle of the small alleyway. As much couldn’t be said for the poor witness who saw the tiny Jiangshi crumple and fall to the floor.

If Lochlann thought about it, he would have realized that he passed out frequently over the last year. Drinking excessively, physical and mental exhaustion, magical powers, blood loss, and just supreme shock were enough to send him toppling to the ground. It was embarrassing, really, but Lochlann never stopped to think about it.

What he did think about was this:

Lochlann was supposed to meet someone who had information on Guinevere's father in an alleyway. Lochlann came to an alleyway, there was a person there, and they'd just collapsed.

Lochlann had no idea that this was a stranger. He had no idea that this stranger didn't know about his quest and collapsed for an entirely different reason. Lochlann thought that someone poisoned or cursed this person just for meeting with them.

Lochlann was at their side in an instant. He dropped to his knees besides them and tried to remember everything he knew about caring for unconscious people, which was really not that much. He pressed his fingers to the person's neck while he looked for a pulse and leaned down over the person's face to check for breathing.

'Hey, hey, hey," Lochlann said. "Are you okay?"

A Jiangshi collapsed due to Qi deprivation is much like a computer that has slipped into sleep mode. The body shuts down to conserve the remaining Qi left in reserves and the result is something that looks like someone who has just fainted or, considering the lack of pulse or breathing, died. However, back to the sleep-mode computer analogy, the Jiangshi will reactivate itself upon touch by a living creature (or sometimes just upon sensing Qi close enough). There are a few minor problems with this reactivation, in the few moments at the start of ‘waking up’ the Jiangshi is not necessarily in control of their body nor are they in the regular state of mind. They will go after the first bit of Qi they can sense and immediately steal it. Once their body has absorbed enough Qi to sustain them for a few hours, about a second of absorption, the Jiangshi regains control of their body and mind. From there, taking more Qi is their own choice.

Barely half a minute after Yu Ling had collapsed a stranger had rushed to their side. This person ,in good conscience presumably, had been shocked and worried and was probably looking to offer their help. Following regular practices for taking care of an unconscious being, they had checked Yu Ling’s pulse (though they might be shocked to find none. Yu Ling was already dead anyways) and leaned close to check for breathing (which, again, they would find none because dead creatures did not need to breathe). Unfortunately for them, that put the stranger in the perfect position for Yu Ling’s next move.

The touch of a living being and the abundance of Qi so close was more than enough to reactivate Yu Ling and their eyes shot open. In a swift move, they closed the few inches of space between their faces and Yu Ling planted a kiss right on the boy’s lips.

After a second, Yu Ling had already regained enough Qi to function for at least 3 hours and subsequently had regained control of their senses. But this stranger had plenty of Qi and Yu Ling figured an extra few seconds of contact probably wouldn’t hurt; plus the person tasted fairly nice. Kinda fresh and clean with a hint of saltiness from something? So they prolonged the kiss for another 9 seconds before breaking the connection. Scooting out from under the guy, Yu Ling hopped up to their feet and gave the tired looking boy a bow.

“Thank you very much! I appreciate your help!”

Lu-BaBa and YeYe always did stress the importance of being polite and manners. Thanking someone for their Qi was essential!

Lochlann was starting to worry because he didn't feel a pulse and this person wasn't breathing. Of course, that might not mean anything on the Manta Carlos islands, but in Lochlann's experience things that were humanoid generally had a pulse and they generally breathed. The absence of these two things was considered an emergency.

Lochlann was not good with emergencies. He found his heart was starting to race and he was feeling like he should be doing something right now and he was about to lean back when the person shot forward and

Holy shit
oh my god
were they..??

yes.

There was a press of lips against his and, naturally, Lochlann responded. There wasn't a lot of things that Lochlann was good at, but kissing was one of them. He softened his lips and tilted his head and holy shit what was he doing he was kissing a stranger in an alleyway this person could be in danger but--

It felt familiar somehow.

Lochlann's body relaxed for the first time in a while as his energy started to pull away. All the weight on his shoulders didn't seem so heavy. It reminded him of someone he knew and someone he trusted so he just relaxed in response.

When the person pulled away, Lochlann blinked, but he didn't get up.

"You're welcome," he said. His voice was a little slurred. Lochlann rubbed at his eyes with his fist. "Um, hey, are you okay? Do you need to see a doctor? I mean you were just...down here...and now you're up there."

Lochlann motioned appropriately to down here, where Lochlann was currently slumped against the alley wall, to up there, where Yu Ling was standing.

"Oh and I mean i guess thank you for that, too," Lochlann said, pressing his fingertips to his lips. They were kind of tingly.

He didn't feel quite right, though. His legs were rather numb.

Ah, the boy looked rather tired now. He was polite though, returning their thanks with a ‘You’re welcome’ of his own. Though he did slightly slur the words. Well, being tired (not that Yu Ling really understood the concept of ‘tired’ that much. They were always either ‘Up and Raring to Go’ or ‘Passed Out and Waiting for Nourishment’) came with having Qi drained from you. So Yu Ling might have taken an eensy bit more than they normally did with strangers after being passed out. He did make it very easy by relaxing and leaning into the kiss. Lots of strangers clearly showed their shock and annoyance by stiffening up and sometimes pushing Yu Ling away (there was once time where the person punched Yu Ling and then tried to hold them down. YeYe had hurriedly moved Yu Ling away somewhere while he dealt with the man. Yu Ling had then met the man once again at the mansion. A few weeks after that feeding, Yu Ling had a very fun older?younger? sibling for a while until they left the mansion).

Now the boy was asking whether Yu Ling was okay and needed a ‘doctor’? Yu Ling tilted their head slightly in response.

“I am very okay after kissing you? Your Qi is very delicious and full of energy! So I am up here now and not down there?”

'Hmm. What was a doctor again?' Yu Ling remembered seeing one in some of the dramas they watched with YeYe. Doctors came to fix people who were sick or broken right? So maybe like what Lu-BaBa did for them when they got maintenance every month?

“No. No doctor. Lu-BaBa will come to give me maintenance in 3 weeks!”

They excitedly showed three fingers like a proud toddler who had just learned numbers. They were certainly very, very excited to see Lu-BaBa and YeYe again.

“Yu Ling only needs to make sure to eat Qi while they are here and everything will be fine!”

In their excitement of thinking of their family’s pending visit, Yu Ling briefly slipped back into their childish third person. Then they remembered the person sitting right there and how YeYe said proper manners in front of other people meant no third person.

He had spoken again thanking Yu Ling for something while touching his lips? Thanks for what? Yu Ling looked at him confused. Now that Yu Ling focused on him again, they could notice that he seemed very tired and wasn’t getting back up.

“Aiyah! Maybe you need doctor? Maybe I took too much Qi from you. Sorry!”

Yu Ling apologized and considered what they knew about taking too much Qi. YeYe had explained Qi and how much to take to Yu Ling in the first month they were ‘born’. Beings replenished their Qi by resting and eating foods, if they remembered correctly.

“You will feel better if you rest! I will take you to a bed and help you!”

They decided on this course of action because Lu-BaBa had told them not to leave bodies around after feeding and plus it would be fun to talk to a new person! With that decision made, Yu Ling picked up the taller boy bridal style ready to take him to a nicer place to rest. Maybe their room back at the school dorms?

Lochlann hated a lot of things.

He hated bright lights. He hated loud noises. He hated Guinevere Haze. He hated Guinevere Haze's father. He hated Gabriel Baltimore. He hated leeks. He hated the way he felt when it was raining and he was trapped in doors. He hated small spaces. He hated buttons. He hated socks, especially toe socks, and he hated postcards with dachshunds in small sweaters.

The list of things Lochlann hated far exceeded any other list he could compile and formed the basis of his personality. If Lochlann were the sort to think of the meaning of his life, he might assume that it was to hate things.

Of all these things that Lochlann hated, being picked up was probably high on that list.

He did not particularly like having his life in someone else's hands. Though surprisingly weak, Lochlann squirmed and thrashed and thought about biting or kicking the person, but he didn't want to do that, especially since this person just collapsed moments before.

Lochlann gritted his teeth.

"Put. Me. Down." Then, because he should be polite, he said, "Please."

What Yu Ling said was finally starting to sink into Lochlann's brain. He felt dizzy, like he might pass out at any moment, and even though he was demanding to be put down, Lochlann didn't think he could stand.

It actually felt...kind of nice. He was used to feeling high strung. This forced relaxation made him feel less like he was going to throw himself into a bad situation.

"Are you saying you uhh...drink energy?" he asked. "Like a succubus?"

Even though it was kind of rude, Lochlann figured he needed to ask the next question. "Are you a succubus?"

It probably would have made for a comical sight if anyone else had been around to witness it. This tiny 5ft slip of a person carrying the much taller and muscular boy with ease, bridal style no less. Right after picking him up in their arms, the boy’s face soured and he began to squirm and wiggle around. Not that it mattered much to Yu Ling who didn’t even flinch as they continued to hold him with any struggle on their part. They turned to walk out of the alleyway, but stopped at the sounds of protest the boy made.

Oh. Now he was asking to be let down. Plus he sounded very grumpy about all of it. Well, he did tack on a ‘Please.’ at the end, even if it sounded very forced. Yu Ling gave him a ‘look’ at his request. The kind of look one gives to someone who is clearly suggesting they do something they can’t. From his voice and the rather weak struggle, he didn’t seem like he would be able to stand up for at least another hour, much less walk back to Yu Ling’s room where they planned to take care of him (they were rather excited by this notion. It would be Fun!). Maybe he preferred to sleep on the floor in the alleyway? Who knew what people liked.

“You are sure you want to sleep here in alleyway? I can carry you back to my room to sleep and eat food. My room is very nice! The bed is very fluffy and full of pillows!”

Yu Ling questioned them though they did heed his plea and put him back down against the wall. It would be unfortunate if he did not want to come back with Yu Ling, they wanted to try out new recipes they had found recently and learn about this new person they just met.

Now he was asking about whether they ‘drank energy’ and were a ‘suc-a-bus’? What was a suc-a-bus? A subby-cus? Westerners sure had weird words. If they could get the boy back to their room, then they could make him tell them about all sorts of things.

“I eat Qi, yes? Sometimes the, ah, Westerners? They call it life energy? I know not what a subby-cus is,” Yu Ling answered his questions. “I am a Jiangshi! Lu-BaBa made me three years ago!” they finished proudly holding up three fingers to represent the amount of years.

This was certainly not how Lochlann expected the afternoon to go. He thought he might get some information, but the person he was supposed to meet was apparently not showing up, so Lochlann saw no harm in discussing things further with this interesting person.

The stranger put him down and for that Lochlann was immensely grateful. He tried to keep his legs beneath him and, with some struggle, managed to. He leaned heavily against the wall and closed his eyes for a few minutes while the alley way spun.

This felt really good.

"Okay," Lochlann said. That was a lot of information, even if the way it was presented was in short, to-the-point sentences. Since they said they were a Jiangshi , Lochlann took it to mean that other thing they said earlier was a name.

"You're name is..Yu Ling? " he clarified. "My name is Lochlann. it's nice to meet you."

He pinched the bridge of his nose and took a deep breath. The ground lurched heavily to the side and Lochlann grabbed onto the wall to steady himself. it was just him.

"Thank you for the offer, but I am not going to sleep in the alleyway or at your home, I am feeling fine," Lochlann said. He was most certainly not fine, but also on the list of things Lochlann hated was admitting to himself or others that he might be unwell.

He was starting to have an idea though and now that it was in his head, he couldn't get rid of it. Lochlann slouched further against the alleyway wall.

He said, "Do you want to go somewhere to talk? I think I may have an offer for you."

It was a bit amusing. The boy, that is. He was leaning against the wall with wobbly legs like a newborn foal, and yet he still proclaimed that he was fine. What an interesting creature Yu Ling had happened upon!

At his introduction, Yu Ling offered up a cheerful, “I am happy to meet you as well, Lochlann!” What an interesting name, though Yu Ling may have botched it slightly with their strong Chinese accent.

The boy swayed unsteadily again, grabbing for the wall to support himself. Yu Ling merely watched amusedly without any indication of offering help. He had refused their help earlier so Yu Ling felt no real further need to try anything more. They didn't generally feel a need to help others unless it was directly related to them or looked interesting. Furthermore, he tried to insist that he was ‘feeling fine’ again; clearly not the case since he looked liable to topple over at a light breeze. Haha! This boy was so funny!

And then, despite his earlier refusals to go with Yu Ling, he proclaimed to have an offer for Yu Ling and asked to talk. Their face lit up at the idea. They wouldn’t be able to bring this new person, (Lochlann, wasn’t it?), back to their room but he was still interested in talking to them! That sounded like lots of fun!

Yu Ling grinned at the exhausted boy, “I want to talk to you! Very much! Where to go to talk? What you want to talk about? I want to know much about you!” They babbled on excitedly for a moment. Wow! Meeting new people and learning new things would be very easy if everyone they kissed on this island also wanted to talk to them afterwards! Most people ran away (or died) after they kissed them. What an exciting and fun new place!
