Race/Species: Jiangshi

Gender: Agender [Generally use They/Them, but will respond to any pronouns.]
Class: High School

College Major: N/A

Appearance Description:
Yu Ling is a short little Chinese person. They measure in at exactly 152 cm (A smidge less than 5 ft) and have a very slight build. Often they get mistaken for a pre-teen, especially with their baby face and underdeveloped build. An androgynous build and face lend no indication towards their gender, and in fact they have no real gender. The composition of their body was comprised of various parts of a few different corpses of the same build. Their main torso was taken from a male body though. At the various connection points of their different body parts some very thin and precise stitching can be noted, though typically it cannot be seen unless you were to get up close and personal to them. The piecing together of their body is extremely well-done and you can hardly tell that all the parts did not belong to one body before.

Apart from the stitching, the only other obvious physical attribute separating them from normal humans would be their odd skin color. Their skin has the light green-yellow tone of very watered down green tea. However those with enhanced senses can probably smell the fact that they’re dead (though the constant smell of ice cream might overlay that).

Other than the skin tone and stitched together body, Yu Ling looks like a regular tiny Asian. They have deep brown almond shaped eyes and shiny, long waist-length black hair. Typically their hair is styled in one long braid down their back, mainly because they have no idea how to do any other hairstyle. However they adore when other people brush, style, or wash their hair for them.

Yu Ling honestly does not have much fashion or style sense. It’s not necessarily that they’re bad at style, but they have no concrete preferences. They could one day look at some frilly cute lolita style dress and be like ‘I want to wear that’ and dress up lolita style; but then the next day they would decide they want to dress up in flannel like a lumberjack from Canada. They are awfully fond of clothing with the Doge meme on it though. Generally you will see them dressed up in stereotypical jiangshi clothing: a deep blue changshan with slightly wider and longer sleeves than normal, loose black pants, white socks, black slippers, and the round hat with paper charm on front. The majority of the time they dress in their jiangshi clothing due to a misconception that this is their designated uniform for life. They love wearing other clothing as well though, and especially enjoy being a dress-up doll for other people.

Due to the fact that their body has been created from various different parts, it’s plausible for their body to be further modified in the future. This means it could be highly likely that for a certain amount of time they could be modified to have a chainsaw arm or have animals ears and tail grafted onto them. Usually such a change would be temporary before they would be re-modified back to their ‘normal’ state.

They tend to have a rather polite but childish smile on their face. Their constant happy mood makes them look far more childish and innocent than they are. Though they are fairly innocent in the sense that they really know nothing. Situations they don’t quite understand, deep emotional displays by others, and getting ready to use a meme causes an expression like the following to occur:

Personality Description:
Yu Ling has a rather childish personality, especially considering that they’ve only be ‘undead’ for three years now. Much of those three years were spent secluded from humanity in a manor with only their creator, his grandfather, and occasional visitors and victims. Now in a place full of various creatures and free to roam as they please, they’re extremely curious (and a bit nosy) about everything. Like a elementary school child, they tend to approach things they’ve never seen before with the constant ‘Why?’ questions (and possibly annoy people who were just chillin’ until this tiny dead dork came up and kept asking questions.). They have no real preconceptions about ‘right’ or ‘wrong’; barring a few ground rules their creator and his grandfather told them. They tend to approach everything with a open view and are easily influenced and gullible.

Sheltered life means that they’ve never really run into any trouble and so their ‘negative’ emotions are significantly underdeveloped. When people are sad or angry at them, they might just respond with a blank smile or laugh. Drama reminds them of the Chinese Drama’s their grandfather watched with them, and so they view other people’s intense emotional displays as mere entertainment. Most of the time they run on a childish, easily excited happy mode where everything is interesting and so much fun! No one’s ever been very angry with them, so they can’t even imagine someone hating them. And they’ve never really been ‘sad’ as well. The closest they’ve gotten is when they separated from their ‘family’ to head to Starlight Academy, and even then their family visits them a lot for maintenance. None of their emotions really run very deep so far. Only their love(Though they don’t really understand love yet.) and loyalty for their maker and family has a lasting and deep connection so far.

What Yu Ling does know about the outside world is largely based off of things their ‘family’ told them and limited access of the internet. However, it would seem that the majority of what they’ve accessed on the internet are memes and crappy pun humor. Fortunately, (probably thanks to a really good firewall and child lock protection) they’ve had no real contact with sexual content (and other dark dark parts of the internet.). As of yet, they are enamoured with the Doge meme and the John Cena meme. They are really interested in memes, but have a hard time actually understanding the context and how to use them and botch up using them sometimes. Their love of memes has led to a slightly mischievous personality.

Despite their crappy meme personality, Yu Ling was raised to respect their elders and be polite to others. They have lots of respect for old people and feel a compulsion to help the elderly. First impressions would seem that they’re a rather polite little child and they tend to speak with respectful/formal language when not trying to emulate a meme. Necromancers hold their utmost respect (barring the highest position held by their own maker and grandfather) and they see them almost as heros. Other undead people are also are held in high regards to them, and an older undead person would likely become their favorite role model.

On the other hand, normal living creatures and other beings are seen more as toys and food. Living creatures are fun to play with and hold the delicious Qi that fuels Yu Ling. However, at the same time Yu Ling would just as easily kill someone without feeling any guilt. It is important to note that since Yu Ling sense of pain is extremely dulled they don’t understand the severity of pain for others. Additionally, while living with their family, they frequently would be called upon to feed from and kill willing suicidal victims. The corpses were then used to create other Jiang Shi. Therefore Yu Ling doesn’t quite understand the severity of death. To them, death seems to be a process where ‘sad people go to sleep and wake up as new friends to play with’.

Whether living or not, Yu Ling does enjoy the company of most beings. With people they like, they’re rather affectionate and fond of holding hands and hugs. With people they don’t like, well...they’ve never actually met someone they didn’t like. They’re very fond of kissing people too, though that’s a bit more related to a need to survive.

Powers:

Man-Made Jiangshi:
Yu Ling is a somewhat oddly made jiangshi that is more Frankenstein’s Monster than pure Zombie or Resurrected Being. Their creator is working on something with creating new souls and reanimating bodies through the process of making jiangshi. Yu Ling is probably one of their biggest successes so far. They have a completely new soul, not a soul of a previous living being.

Kiss of Death:
As a jiangshi, Yu Ling runs off of Qi, otherwise known as life force/spirit energy. Their method of obtaining Qi is to suck the energy out of living beings through kissing them. By kissing, this means any lip-to-skin contact they make with a living being. While it does not need to be lip-to-lip contact, Yu Ling just enjoys messing with people and that’s their preferred method.

They need Qi to survive and going without puts them into ‘power saving’ mode which is essentially passing out. However, while in this ‘coma’ if a living being comes by close enough they’ll sense the Qi and attack. Yu Ling tends to mischievously mess with people by running low on energy and passing out, then kissing the person who comes to check on them or just gets close enough.

The longer a jiangshi goes without energy, the more unrestrained the resulting attack on the next person is and the more Qi the Jiangshi drains from the victim. While drained Qi will be replenished slowly over time, if the person is completely drained of all their Qi they’ll die. Additionally, being low on Qi means it’s a lot easier to kill that person or for them to get ill, basically you’re a lot weaker than usual.

Having Qi drained makes a person feel tired, and the more Qi drained means the sleepier you feel until you slip into death. Typically once lip-to-skin contact is made, the victim starts to feel a bit tired and relaxes and, depending on the length of contact, will pass out.

The amount of time until the victim wakes up depends on the amount of Qi drained and, to some extent, the general health of the victim. Typically very small drainage, a few seconds of contact, results in a somewhat tired victim who doesn’t pass out. At about half a minute, the victim will likely pass out for anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Typically beyond 2 minutes is enough to kill most beings.

The majority of Yu Ling’s feedings (and kisses) are below 10 seconds and not enough to cause someone to pass out. Depending on the quality of the Qi, the energy will last for 6-9 hours. The victim should be able to replenish all the drained Qi within a week. Taking all the Qi from a person would probably be enough to sustain Yu Ling for a week or more.

Undead Body:
Built from the parts of various corpses and strengthened through the act of resurrection itself, Yu Ling’s body is significantly more durable than a regular human. Additionally, they have extremely low sensitivity to pain. Being already dead, they cannot be afflicted with normal diseases, poisoned, or suffocated. Overall, they’re already dead so they cannot be killed.

Many of attributes have been enhanced in the process of making them a Jiangshi such as: speed, strength, endurance, hearing, and sense of smell. Their speed and strength could probably equal, if not surpass, the fastest and strongest normal humans. As for endurance, apart from not having enough Qi, nothing really tires them out. The senses of hearing and smell for them are perhaps on par with a wolf’s. Their teeth are slightly sharper than average humans, and their nails are much harder and sharper as well.

On the other hand, their sense of touch and taste are the same as a normal human’s. However, their eyesight is very weak and more like a dog’s eyesight than a human’s. Additionally their body is very inflexible and rather stiff. Speaking of taste, Yu Ling can eat and drink much like a regular being, however it has no real function for them. Eating and drinking very hot substances will quicken the deterioration of their body and is not recommended. Very cold substances help keep the body more stable by cooling it down.

While their body overall is durable, they can still be injured by excessive force. Unfortunately, part of being undead means their injuries don’t really heal. However, they don’t bleed either, so it’s really just a tear in their body. If parts are broken off or cut off, usually it can be sewn back on and still function until their next maintenance check. Until their creator or some other being fixes them back up properly, the resewn on appendage will be more fragile than normal and could easily break off again under stress. Luckily, even being cut up in little pieces cannot kill them as long as their creator or another necromancer comes and resurrects them again.

However, there are a few things that can erase Yu Ling’s existence. Complete immolation of their body and no recovery of the soul within the aftermath is the most likely way to kill them. Otherwise, soul related activities such as removing their soul from the body or destroying their soul will destroy the being that is ‘Yu Ling’ while leaving an intact corpse.

Mix and Match Frankenstein:
Part of being a Frankenstein’s Monster-esque being means that Yu Ling’s body is made up of various different parts and customizable to a certain extent. Their creator can customize their body to contain different weapons, add certain features, or just for aesthetics. There are limits though and the majority of the body must stay humanoid otherwise it is too much strain to handle.

As of yet, the only customization Yu Ling contains are tasers in both their palms. The tasers are of regular strength and don’t have much function other than protection for Yu Ling. Only Yu Ling can control when they turn on or off.

Biography:

Yu Ling Lu was created by a young 20-some year old necromancer out in a the countryside of Northern China. This necromancer, known to Yu Ling Lu as (Lu-baba)Father Lu, was researching ways to create new souls and implement them within jiangshi. Yu Ling Lu was his first success (and secretly the one he’s most proud of).

Yu Ling was created from various body parts from at least 3 different corpses between the ages of 15-18. At the time of creation, Yu Ling’s ‘personality’ was essentially blank and held similarity with a robot doll. However, Father Lu was on a roll with his research now and had no time to spend long hours teaching Yu Ling. And so Yu Ling was essentially put in the care of Father Lu’s grandfather, a man Yu Ling affectionately refers to as (Yeye)Grandpa, a retired necromancer himself.

Under Grandpa’s care, Yu Ling would be taught much of the basic education one would need to survive in the modern world. Additionally, they would be taught various house chores to help out around the manor as Grandpa wasn’t quite as energetic as he used to be. Treated like his own grandchild, Yu Ling ‘grew up’ a happy and curious child who very much enjoyed their time with their family. Much of their time was spent helping Grandpa or Father Lu with chores and playing with Grandpa. They spent a lot of time watching Chinese Opera and dramas with Grandpa actually. Sometimes they would also be allowed to access the internet for fun or studying; which is where their obsession with memes comes into play.

Being, rather visibly, a jiangshi meant that Yu Ling could not go out in public (at least during daylight) without causing panic; therefore essentially being sheltered from the outside world. With only Father Lu and Grandpa as the only living beings in the manor, the two people they would never consider killing, they needed a way to obtain Qi. For a while, (and during weeks with no willing victim after), Yu Ling was allowed to wander the streets (under supervision of Grandpa) and steal bits of Qi from strangers. It was during these times when Yu Ling started implementing the ‘pass out and kiss a stranger’ method as their favorite way of feeding. Which is why Father Lu came up with the idea to advertise (in a low-key untraceable method) a way for a pain free and quiet way to commit suicide and fade from the world (additionally, it was also advertised as a way to be paid for giving him a body to use). These sad victims would come to the manor and be quietly and softly put to sleep by Yu Ling’s kiss. And so Yu Ling would be sated for quite some time and Father Lu would gain fresh, intact, corpses to use for research.

Other than Father Lu and Grandpa, the occasional other jiangshi would be successfully created by Father Lu, though many times these jiangshi would only stay with the family for a month before being sold or given to other people. And so, after two years of living with essentially just Father Lu and Grandpa, Yu Ling brought up their desire to see the outside world and interact with other beings. Several in-depth discussions about it later, Father Lu and Grandpa agreed to let Yu Ling attend a school for supernatural beings on the condition that Yu Ling wait one more year before leaving. And so after another year of peaceful living with their family, Yu Ling was off to enroll in and explore Starlight Academy and Manta Carlos.

Additional Information:

  • Yu Ling eats lots and lots of cold foods to help maintain their body. They especially love ice cream and consume an unholy amount of soft serve and popsicles.
    • They don’t like caramel or other sticky syrupy additions in their ice cream because it’s hard to clean off
    • Father Lu actually bought Yu Ling a soft serve machine for them to use
  • Yu Ling frequently gets visits from Father Lu and Grandpa for their monthly maintenance check-up
    • This means severe injuries during a RP will generally be fixed within a month’s time
    • This also means they might change customizations month to month
  • Yu Ling owns a pair of pajamas with Doge on them. They also own a hoodie and racerback tank top with Doge on them. They really love Doge.
  • Their ringtone is the wan meme song.
