She shifted and it was Lochlann's intention to shift, too, but her hand reached up to brush his hair. Normally, he leaned his head into it like an animal feeling affection. His reaction was still very similar, but there was less shame in it. His eyes sought hers.

Lochlann did not have a cat, but if he did, the analogy might have been the look a cat gives when it is unable to distinguish play from hunting.

"It's hard," Lochlann said, "To feel like I should be recovering. Being with you makes me want to run a thousand miles just to tell the most beautiful thing I see that it doesn't shine as brightly as you."

It was probably a bit too much, probably too cheesy, but it was genuine. His face was serious. He reached out to touch her hand, as if asking her if she'd come with him. His palm was up in invitation.


He really had been listening to what Pony told him. He'd been taking it easy. Trying to relax, not to strain himself.

But all of that went into the wind. He felt like he could do anything.
