Bear was lumbering about quickly with a speed unbefitting the large animal. His eyes shone with an intelligence normal animals didn't have. His swipes were precise, but sluggish from his injuries. The animal was actively dodging attacks, and seemed to be actually using attacks in a pattern, a style. It was similar to some of the moves Milk had been using.

Milk on the other hand, was like a dancer. She easily dodged the attacks Bear sent her way, bending over his paw and contorting her body in ways that didn't seem physically possible. She blocked punches, and sent swipes away, correcting Bears form as she did so. It was entrancing to see how well she taught and fought, and how seamlessly she combined the two.

The Bear was good, far better than it had any right to be. Perhaps it was due to some sort of training by Milk but it moved deceptively fast for its size, almost like an actual fighter. That said, nature had formed it to be large and strong rather than sleek and agile. If he ever had to face the creature down himself, he'd need to run and weave through the gigantic trees that grew around the forest. Even if the beast could smash through them it would take energy to do so and reduce his speed, perhaps enough so Murphy could do something.

Milk was another matter entirely. She was faster, stronger, better trained and more combat aware than himself. Facing her in melee combat would be a fool's errand. That said, she did seem to have at least one glaring weakness. She was a paragon of physical might, but lacked even the most basic social maneuverability. It was cynical to even think about it but if he ever was forced to confront her, he'd have to use manipulation rather than brute force.

Murphy stood up and dusted himself off. The night was coming in a couple of hours, and it would take a bit to get back. He slid into his duster and leaned on the rock, waiting for the pair to finish their duel.

About thirty minutes later, Bear and Milk were done sparring. Another few attacks from each fighter, and they slowly wound down. Milk gave Bear another few pieces of advice before he made a growling noise and nuzzled her. She patted his head, and sent the large animal on his way, Bear moving back into the forest. Milk returned to Murphy, sweat dripping from her forehead and her muscles.

"Did you complete your strength training for today, Murphy?" She asked in her normal monotone, taking her water bottle and drinking from it.

Murphy shrugged, "Eh, yeah, I mean my arms are killing me and I doubt that I made any actual difference in the rock. Not like you or Bear at least." He nodded towards the beast. "I mean, I doubt I'll ever be able to take him in a sparring match, let alone a real fight. It's just a little disheartening sometimes, you know?"

He motioned to the rock that he'd been hammering away at, not so much as a single shard had chipped away. "I could train for the rest of my life, yet my strength will never come near yours. This isn't me being a pessimist, I just understand my limitations. I want to be strong, I want to be tough, but it gets frustrating when I see some of the people on the island who are simply gifted with those things and all I got was... well, you've seen it. My power is a joke compared to most other people's."

His pack was lifted and hefted over his shoulder with ease. "Perhaps I should not complain. I live on an island where all of my needs are paid for, and I'm being given a great education for no cost at all. Yet, I feel... inadequate. Does any of that make sense to you?"

Milk frowned at Murphy's words, and it only deepened as he went on. She did not enjoy hearing people talk about how weak they are. She stormed over to him angrily, crossing her arms.

"It does make sense. Yes." She nodded, before cocking her head to the side, continuing. "But you seem to be whining about how you will not come to my level of strength. This is true. It is incredibly likely you will not be as strong as me. It is also likely that nobody else will. That is why I spar with Bear. Because he is one of the few beings on this island that I can safely spar with. That is why I have you punch the rock, Murphy. You may not notice, but you are getting stronger with each punch, your tolerance to pain growing. Soon, I will begin your training Murphy." She continued, putting a hand on the boys shoulder, squeezing softly.

"Just because your abilities are not the same as mine, or as inherently powerful as other students, does not make them a joke. Where is the Murphy who just a few weeks ago destroyed a portion of this forest." She gestured to the forest, the newly grown trees among the stumps of those that were destroyed. "Where is the Murphy that stopped me from losing control in the hospital? Where is he?"

The fighter was getting an angry hint to her voice. "Yes, you will not be able to fight Bear. That does not matter. When I am finished training you, you will be second to none on this island." She grabbed Murphy's other shoulder, looking into his eyes, a fire in her brown eyes. "You feel inadequate because you are comparing yourself to unattainable standards. Compare your current strength to the strength of the Murphy that existed when we first met. Who sprained his wrist punching my arm."

She gestured to the rock, the large imposing boulder still standing in the sunset, an orange glow tinting off the stone. "Would he be able to punch the rock for this long without nary a complaint? You say your arms are killing you, but I think it is the voice in your head that says you cannot do it. You must overcome the voice Murphy, only then will you find true strength. Do you understand my words?"

His eyes narrowed as she began to lecture him, her burning, passionate gaze matched by a cold, steely resolve in his. For an instant he wanted to lash out, to strike at her despite knowing it was futile. The moment passed however, and the glare melted into a gentle smile. She'd reacted exactly as he'd anticipated.

Even after everything they'd been through together he stood on the precipice of sorts. For years he had been living his entire life being reactive rather than pursuing his own goals because he lacked any sort of stability as an individual. On the other hand Milk's entire being screamed stability. Even her rage was a sort of predictable force if one planned around it.

For the past few weeks he'd been poking at her. Asking her questions and prodding at her personality to really try to see who she was. He'd been please to find out that while she wasn't... as observant or socially inclined as others, her sense of loyalty and brutal honesty shone like a diamond in the sun. Every one of her traits seemed to mirror and oppose his; her openness opposed his reclusion, his method of skirting around problems clashed with her direct approach... in short she was a perfect foil for him. It wasn't even that she didn't lie, he wasn't even sure she could be dishonest.

He rested a hand on her arm and gave it a light squeeze. "Aye, you're right I suppose. Though you must understand that I've spent my whole life failing to meet even the basest of expectations. I am... trying to alter that aspect of myself, so please bare with me. It's not easy trying to better oneself in multiple ways at once. But... thank you Milk."

"It is okay Murphy. You are welcome. I know you can do it." Milk nodded, a smirk cracking on her normally expressionless face. She stepped forward, wrapping Murphy in a tight, powerful hug. "I am aware that a hug is used to end matters such as these. That is correct, yes?" She said, hugging Murphy tightly.

God Dammit Milk.

Murphy could have sworn he felt a rib crack as Milk embraced him. Still, it was the first emotional act he'd seen her perform since they'd first met so he returned it in kind. He didn't really feel any better about his current strength but that was to be expected, one did not completely alter themselves in such a short amount of time after all. But now he had a stable influence in his life, a rock in the metaphorical river of chaos that was his life. With that, he might finally be able to move past... whatever this feeling was.

"Oof, yeah... though I'd appreciate it if ya didn't crack my ribs. Gonna need those to keep training."

Milk nodded, releasing Murphy. She had a faint smile on her face, and she spoke, crossing her arms again.

"Training is complete for the day. It is time to return to the school. Come Murphy." She gestured for him to follow her, beginning her walk back through the forest.
