Early in the morning, Carmin always used two mirrors to check the leaves on his head. Bugs seemed to really like laying their eggs in them, so this little routine had been developed to find the leaves and remove them before the bugs hatched. Although, today's find was a little more peculiar than bug eggs. There were small brownish specks all over a bunch of the leaves. He didn't recognize the condition, but he could tell it wasn't good. He wanted to pluck the leaves out and let new ones grow in their place, but reluctantly decided to leave them in for the time being. Just in case. He decided he'd try to go to a flower shop and see if they could fix him up. Flower shops usually had everything he needed after all.

With that, Carmin packed up his backpack for the day, found the closest flower shop using his phone, and headed out. He didn't usually like heading out into the city so much, but this was important so he didn't waste any time. Besides, the shop wasn't really that far in.

After a relatively short walk, Carmin had arrived at the storefront. It really wasn't so hard to get there, though the next part was always a little more nerve wracking. Clenching his fist, he would open the door and walk inside. A shop like this always made him weirdly uncomfortable. Something about lovely flower shops. Still, it was a feeling he'd need to overcome. He would likely be back in the future, so he might as well suck it up and get used to it.

Carmin walked up to the front desk, curiously glancing at all the flowers living it up around him. When he got there, he stood on his toes, reached up and tapped the service bell.

Another day, another dollar.

Sort of.

Although Gabe enjoyed the work he did in his mother's shop, he wasn't exactly paid for it. Most of his wages went back into helping out the shop or their apartment in some way. But that was fine with him. The destruction of Halcyon had given him and his mother a second chance where they didn't have to fear for their lives due to some meta-human conflict. Gabe didn't have to out and commit crimes to keep some sort of money flowing into the household. It was honest work for an honest living and the former villain wouldn't trade it for the world.

The fun perk of being a plant manipulator was Gabe's ability to help push plants to grow much more quickly than the standard time. Plus, when he grew them, the plants always seemed to look healthier and more beautiful. At least, in his opinion they did. As he gently coaxed the latest pot of orchids to begin blooming, that all familiar bell began to ring. He called out, "Coming!" before giving the orchid a fond farewell and moving towards the front desk.

"Hello, welcome to..." He began his usual customer greeting before trailing off. No one was there? Was the person invisible? He wasn't confused for long as the faint sight of a very large yet familiar purple pansy caught his attention. "Oh hey, Carmin! What brings you out to the shop?" He smiled with a faint reveal of his pointed teeth. The young plant boy had been someone Gabe had seen quite a bit of since returning to the island, although a small part in the back of his head worried about someone so young being out on their own. Did he not have anyone supervising him?

Hearing the employee call out, Carmin took the extra time to look around curiously. He saw a few plants that he recognized, all of which seemed to be in tip top condition.

Before long, footsteps could be heard and Carmin turned back to face the front desk. He only realized someone was there when he heard the voice, unable to see them over the inconveniently sized table. As they stopped talking, he assumed they were experiencing the same trouble, so he took a step back to hopefully get into a better view.

It worked, but what he saw came as a surprise. It was Gabe. His eyes opened wide, finding that this actually made a lot of sense. Of course he'd work at a flower shop, he had that weird power to make plants grow. Then it also explained why all the plants in the shop were in such pristine condition.

"Um." Unfortunately, Carmin didn't see this as a good thing. He didn't want Gabe to see his weird problem, he was hoping there would be some random person here who would fix him, send him on his merry way and never see him again. But he needed to get rid of the spots, so he decided he'd have to just deal with it. "Well..." He looked around a little as if to check if the coast was clear before handing over top secret info. "Something is kind of wrong with my leaves..." He shifted nervously in his place as he spoke and avoided eye contact. He tilted his head as he finished speaking, displaying a group of leaves decorated with brownish spots. There were a bunch of only somewhat bad ones, but four leaves in the center of the bunch were almost entirely covered in the spots. "I was, uh, wondering if you guys might know what is wrong or how to fix it?"

Gabe couldn't help but smile somewhat as Carmin looked so shy. It was almost adorable but the plant manipulator was quickly shaken from his thoughts when the flower child presented him with the various spotted leaves. That... wasn't normal. That looked like some sort of infestation that Carmin had developed. Why hadn't the boy gone to see one of the school's health people? Maybe they didn't know what to do about it? Gabe quickly moved around the counter and knelt down to be at eye level.

"Oof, that doesn't look good. But, give me a little bit to research and I should be able to figure out something to make this go away. I'm going to ask you a few questions just to help speed up the research process, okay? Don't you worry, little buddy, I'm practically an expert on plants." Gabe reached over to ruffle Carmin's hair but quickly remembered that there was a large, slightly infested pansy sitting atop that would probably prefer to not be prodded around. He quickly gave Carmin's shoulder two gentle pats before getting back up and moving to the back side of the counter once more. He pulled out an older laptop and set it on the flat surface and quickly opened it. One log in entered later and Gabriel was ready to start scouring the internet for solutions.

"So," he asked, moving around the counter once again and flipping the laptop around so he could still work while being close by to Carmin, "How long have you had these brown spots?"

The initial part that Gabe said about it not looking good caused Carmin to worry, looking up at him with a little fright. Though the reassurance offered seemed to dispel most of his fear. Being called little buddy was annoying, but Carmin understood that Gabe was just trying to help and managed to let it pass. If he really was a plant expert, which seemed pretty believable at this point, then it was probably a good idea to stay on good terms with him.

The two pats caused a totally different worry in Carmin's head, the realization that Gabe might have thought he was a kid. He blushed a lighter green than usual at the thought, unable to properly pay attention as Gabe started asking the first question. "U-uhm." This was always a difficult thing to explain, and he hadn't improved at saying it at all.

"I don't really know how long, I only really noticed them this morning... but uh." He rubbed his shoulder a moment before tearing the band-aid off. "You know I'm not a kid right? I'm like eighteen..."

Gabe stared out into the distance for a long moment, imagining a day where he wouldn't have his foot in his mouth all of the damn time. He did it with Angelo, he did it with Broen, and now here he is, making dumb assumptions that just create more awkward social situations. "...You know, that makes a lot of sense. I had been wondering why you came here unsupervised so the fact that you're older than you appear explains a lot. Never mind the fact that apparently you're older than me and I've been doing nothing but talking to you like you were an elementary school student."

He sighed, glancing between the computer and over Carmin's head. Honestly, looking anywhere besides Carmin seemed to be the best choice. "I'm sorry that I was not treating you like the adult you are. That wasn't fair of me to assume and you deserved to be acknowledged as a person based on who you are, not your appearance." He would eventually kneel down so he was at eye level. Gabe's cheeks were noticeably red but he still had a job to do. "I hope you can accept my apology."

"As for this brown spot problem, is it only on your leaves or do you have any of them on the rest of your body? I'm going to assume this is only a recent development since it doesn't seem to have spread too far or in a much more noticeable way. I'm a little concerned about how brown some of these leaves are but I still think it'll be manageable. How much do you know about your powers and abilities? How plant-like are you? Does it hurt to have leaves pruned or is it more like a haircut? I'm pretty sure pruning some of the worst leaves might help since it'll stave off whatever is bothering you but I'll still try to get something made that you can use as well."

Gabe paused again, letting out another sigh. "Sorry, that's probably a lot to throw at you at once. We'll get through each question one at a time. I'd imagine this is probably really invasive for you when I'm asking all of these probing questions."

Gabe didn't know, not that it came as much of a surprise based on how he had been treating him. What did shock him was Gabe's reaction. Carmin wasn't sure what he expected, but a heartfelt apology certainly wasn't it. Regardless, hearing that he deserved to be treated based on who he really was rather than his appearance was actually pretty touching. It was nice to hear that Gabe thought that.

Sure, it was annoying when this happened, but the apology kind of made it hard for Carmin to get upset. It was maybe a little too genuine for him to even think about turning it down. "Oh, uhm, yeah it's fine, don't worry about it." It was partially his own fault, he should've told Gabe his age right away when they met.

Back to the brown spot issue, Carmin held up his arm and gave it a suspicious look. "I'm pretty sure it's all in that one area. I looked around and didn't see anything anywhere else this morning." Assuming it was pretty new was probably a safe bet, Carmin nodded at the mention of that.

Then there was the mention of powers and physiology, resulting in a slight frown. as far as he was concerned, he didn't have any. "Well, I can sort of regenerate, just takes me a while unless its the leaves or flowers. These guys come back pretty quick." Carmin plucked a flower right off his arm and held it up. "I can also grow roots pretty quick if I'm standing in dirt. Apart from that, my body is basically just a plant that can somehow think, talk, see and hear. I, uh, don't have any nerves I don't think, so nothing really hurts." As he spoke, a bud could be seen growing back the flower that he'd picked.

It was a lot of questions, sure, but Gabe was asking them to help him. He replied with a quiet "It's okay." If plucking the leaves would fix the issue then that was probably going to be pretty simple.

Gabe hummed, pulling a small stool from behind the counter and wheeled it next to Carmin. "Go ahead and take a seat on that. It'll be easier for me to examine the spots instead of having to stoop down." He quickly moved back behind the counter and towards the far end of the shop and knelt down out of view. His mother, bless her heart, had been trying to get this shop set up on her own while he was off doing his internship off the island. Although Catalina was what one could call a 'workaholic', not everything was quite where it was supposed to be. His gardening tools were all over the shop or still packed in whatever boxes were lying around. Eventually finding a small pair of pruning shears and what appeared to be a screwdriver with an abnormal head, Gabe would return with a small grin.

"So you're able to regrow leaves and flowers. Would you know if the plants you grow are rooted to you or do they even have roots? On the off-chance those brown spots are some sort of infection that's already gone down the roots, we might want to try actually removing the root of the plant that got infected." He inhaled through his nose then quietly exhaled. "Although I'd rather not do that unless absolutely necessary since I don't want to be digging into you and hurt you in some way. Most likely plucking the leaves will be enough and maybe some sort of anti-fungal or pesticide you can apply for post-care. What are your thoughts?"

Carmin watched as Gabe brought out a little stool and offered him a seat. “Oh-okay” Complying, Carmin would take a seat, though he seemed hesitant at first. He wasn’t too sure what Gabe was planning, but he had suspicions that he was about to get a hair cut. He watched the counter in suspense as Gabe disappeared, getting just a little startled when he returned with shears.

What Gabe said after seemed to confirm Carmin’s suspicions. That being said, it probably was for the better. If he cut the leaves himself, it would be quite the hassle. Gabe could see behind him and was probably pretty good at pruning plants.

“Hmm. I think that you can look at it like my body is a stem. The roots for the flowers are those ones that I can turn off and on, so right now none of these have roots.” Carmin would brush a hand through some of the leaves on the top of his head, ignoring the fact that some of them were sick. “All of this and me are just one plant.” The idea of having to dig out a section of himself was partially worrisome, but he was fairly certain that it still wouldn’t hurt him. What did worry him was the thought that some sort of infection had already made its way through most of his body. “Um, if it can make it to roots, does that mean it could be in a stem too?” He made a tiny gulp after he finished speaking.

"In theory, it can. But your body's build isn't quite the same as a normal plant so it might not affect you in the way you think? It's a bit of a mystery, not gonna lie."

Gabe hummed, pruning the infected leaves with quick yet precise movements. Although not as fast as a true professional botanist or topiary expert, the plant manipulator definitely seemed to know what he was doing. Any of the trimmed leaves that were cut were immediately scooped up and set on the counter nearby. However, he made sure to specifically leave one small leaf that had the start of the weird brown spots. After admiring his work for a few moments, the tools were delicately placed by the infected plants and he grinned.

"There, cut the major infected ones. I'll have to mess with these infected ones for a moment to see if I can do anything. So, I'm gonna be doing some research on the laptop and testing some things out with my powers to hopefully find whatever we're looking for. You... wanna just hang out?" Gabe trailed off for a moment, walking around the counter and getting back on the laptop.

"I mean, not exactly the best way to start a friendship, but I've started weirder." He frowned for a moment before continuing to type. "Relationships too, actually. Maybe I'm the oddity? Meh, unimportant."
