The fact that she was stuttering probably should have bothered him, Havoc recognized. But it didn't. He'd had to deal with people who barely spoke English, and been forced to have entire conversations with only his own broken Pashto. A bit of stuttering--perhaps even a lot of stuttering--was absolutely nothing by comparison.

It didn't hurt that Havoc was extremely patient.

"A new student every month in an advisory capacity, chosen by teachers?" Havoc said, re-explaining the idea as he understood it. "Like the head of the class." As someone who was so often in that head of the class position, Havoc felt like it could be rather motivational to have something to reach for.

"I would prefer to avoid scaring anyone at all. People do poorly when they learn self defense out of fear," Havoc said, speaking largely out of personal experience. "The ideal would be a demonstration of someone powerful--with their powers--losing to someone in a fight with no powers. It would demonstrate that preparations will win out when powers are taken off the playing field."

The issue would be actually setting up that demonstration.

"Th-The head of the class might work... I-It might be b-better to ensure that... The change m-more frequently... B-But the h-heads of class would p-probably be more... M-More motivated... I g-guess it would take s-some balancing..." She shrugged.

"I-I agree... A d-demonstration would... Probably b-be the best solution... I-It would be d-d-difficult to arange though... M-Maybe the school has a-a way to... Nullify p-powers... F-For emergencies..? maybe you c-can check with them..."

Havoc had once, long ago, been told that he needed to more clearly signal that he was thinking. Having someone sit there, staring at you, making no conscious sign of anything tended to be, in so many words, 'creepy'.

It was with that in mind that he reached up, scratching at his chin in an attempt to clearly signal that he was giving what she'd said some thought.

"The top student in the class, and the classes rotate through at random? If it wasn't random, people would only care about being top if their class was going to be sending a representative." Havoc noted.

He should have been writing it down, but he did have a good memory.

"I think the school likely would. They do have power nullifying bracelets for students who need to be sent to the juvenile facility. Perhaps they could be borrowed? Someone who is large and scary with their powers going down..."

Havoc paused for a moment, scratching at his chin again to clearly show he was thinking.

"I could handle it myself if I could find someone. I could simply challenge anyone to beat me with a power bracelet on. I doubt there are many who could, and those who are arrogant with their powers would do well to learn self defense without them..."

"I g-guess that's true..." Emily glanced upward, tilting her head to the side in her own indication of thought. "I-I hadn't thought of that... I s-suppose it w-would be better if... It were m-more a perk... M-Maybe I sh-should take... My own advice..."

She fidgeted a little, licking her lips some. She didn't really like the idea of violence too much, so it felt kind of weird to be advising on it. "I-It could maybe b-be a... Like a lecture..? If y-you did an a-after school assembly... Or s-something... You could challange a lot o-of people... I-I'd bet the powerful, o-overconfident omes would t-take you up o-on it..."

Would people really want to be in charge? Havoc knew he would, but he was self aware enough to realize that not everyone was like him. Not everyone enjoyed responsibility, and some might avoid it entirely.

"We'll have to let them opt out. So that the teachers would have to ask," Havoc said, mentally noting things down.

"That would be the idea, yes. The people who have such strong powers they've gotten used to being on the top of the pile would agree to fight, only to be taken down because they lack proper self defense training."

In theory, anyway.

"It would hammer home the idea that everyone could use self defense training."

Emily nodded "Th-That's a good idea... They sh-should always have a choice... I-If they're forced they'll j-just... Not ever w-want to..."

"The o-only snag I see... I-If you get permission to do this... I-Is if they end up b-being able... T-To defend themselves... D-Do you th-think that will be a p-problem..."

Losing wasn't really an issue to Havoc, and he simply shook his head in response.

"Even if I lose, I would be losing to self defense. A match between two people who have both been trained might inspire interest in self defense for entirely different reasons," Havoc said, although he felt it might not inspire as much. Actual fights tended to look absolutely nothing like they did in the movies, and the rule was that if a fight was still going on after two minutes, something had gone horribly, horribly wrong.

"Beyond that, I'm confident that I could handle the majority of the students who would choose to fight me."

"Oh... I see... I guess that w-would work then... I-It would depend on h-how well you did..." Emily glanced up at a clock, then back down to Havoc. "I d-don't really have anything... E-Else to say about your p-points... And I-I should probably get g-going... G-Good luck though... It s-seems like you h-have a good plane..." She stood up and started gathering her things, getting ready to head out.

Oh, she had to go? Havoc paused, realizing that he'd probably just dragged a girl into a conversation they didn't want to have, and nodded.

"I realize," Havoc said a bit too late. "That I should have asked first if you were alright with this. Could I buy you a drink to make up for my mistake?"

Food and drink, Havoc had come to realize, were a quick way to apologize to people. It was a small amount of sacrifice that showed genuine regret, even if Havoc's regret couldn't quite be counted as genuine.

He was trying, at least, even if it was more like following an instruction manual then out of any genuine emotion.

Emily paused and tilted her head a little, licking her lips a couple times. After a moment she shook her head. "I d-don't think you made a mistake... You d-did ask me to come s-speak with you... And I a-accepted... Did I-I not..." She could have just as easily told Havoc she needed to leave before sitting at the table with him. She had decided herself to continue the conversation. "... Th-Though... I w-wouldn't turn down a d-drink... I don't u-usually talk s-so much... I-I'm a bit parched to b-be honest..."
