"You think I'm adorable or funny or amusing?" she asked earnestly. She barely noticed the pause at the end of the statement, instead opting to pat his hair again. He was after all at least two of those three things. Which of those three he was, she couldn't quite figure out, but she let it be.

Even if it didn't show as well as it should, Max felt thankful. It had been a while since she had decent company that was interesting, and even longer than that since the last decent company who was willing to talk and put up with her.

His words were flattering too. They had a bit of a playful air about them, and they made her doubts about smiling disappear. The worried expression on her face found itself replaced by a pleasant smile which hurt her cheeks. "I think I'm smiling again. It feels good but it hurts my cheeks."

"You were amusing, just that." This time, Paradox had no hesitation to grab her hand and put it down. She was ruining his hair, Alec's hair, not that it was styled with wax or gel but still. And then he let her go and folded his arms over his chest.

He was trying so hard to look indifferent, so hard. He's never felt so much struggle before, never had the reason to hold in the burning sensation on his face.

"You don't have to tell me when you're smiling, I have eyes you know." He started walking down, all the way down the stairs and he had no sign of stopping... until he reached his seventh step and turned back to Max just before making a turn. "I'm sick of stairs. You're gonna follow or what?"

"Amusing how?" she asked, rubbing her fingers together as if trying to recover the sensation of Paradox's hair on her skin. It was fluffy, and just a little bit greasy, as far as she could tell.

Her confusion was genuine; she'd been called many things in her past - though mostly unflattering things - but amusing was not among them. Few had patience for her unintentional vagueness or general difficulty to get along with, which was luckily so far not an issue with Alec and or Paradox. Distinguishing between the two was getting confusing.

"I don't think I can follow," Max said, staying put and staring at Paradox intently, body slightly leaning forward. She brushed her long hair away from her face with a smooth movement of her hands, revealing her expression which was deep in thought. "There's no destination. Where will we go? Or maybe the question is where you will take me and what will you show me instead?"

Paradox clicked his tongue, and it echoed through the whole place. He didn't turn back to Max. He continued, and whatever he was going to say, the concrete walls were going to deliver it to her.

"Does it matter where we go? Thinking about that isn't my style, Miss Clouds." He was already out of sight by then, since there was a blind turn ahead. "If you're not gonna tag along, I can always just head back to my room and sleep."

"I see... maybe going somewhere without knowing where would be nice for a change." Max stood up and carefully dusted her long skirt with a genteel touch, then straightened up and hurriedly followed down the stairs. It was as close to a run as she was willing to get, and her usually graceful gait became clumsier.

At the bottom of the stairs, she was standing beside Alec or Paradox - at this point she had no idea how to refer to him. Her head tilted and she looked at his face. "I'll be in your care then..?"

Looking ahead of them, Paradox placed his hands inside his jeans' pockets as he waited for the girl to catch up. Max, she... she sure was something. Being able to rattle him like that and being absolutely clueless about it... it was almost horrible. But he wasn't mad at her, unlike what his thoughtfully stoic face was showing. And maybe she'll somehow read through him, just like how she discovered his secret existence, right?

He shook his thoughts off, considering them unimportant. Max was already standing beside him then, looking at him again in such a way that Paradox didn't mind calling her innocent. Yeah, that's... that's probably the right term for her.

He looked at her through the corners of his eyes at first, not moving a muscle other than those, but he eventually gave into smiling, because holding that back was hard and it was better to let it be. Paradox turned to her and patted her head again.

"Yeah, please return the favor," he said, rather gently. "Y'know what? I think I can like you after all."
