She visibly eased up upon seeing Lochlann relax with her touch. She just kept doing so, until the lamb forced her to pull away. She smiled weakly at it, and petted it gently on the head.

She turned back to Lochlann as she caught him move to his back. Dinner? She had an awesome lunch with a friend before, now someone wants dinner with her? What's up with men and meals? (She has no idea.) She shrugged, and smiled apologetically. "I don't think that's a good idea right now," she said and made an awkward chuckle. She was still petting the lamb, hoping it keeps itself close to them. "I mean... I'm really... It's really embarrassing... And I don't want to end up hurting you like this again if ever I get surprised again..."

She couldn't look at him in the eye. And so her own orbs trailed off to the side, landing on her belt that she dropped when she fell. She grabbed it since it was in reach from where she was, and automatically fixed it around her jeans right there and then. "We don't need this anymore, do we? So I'm going to wear it now if that's okay."

Lochlann laughed. "It's okay, I was joking. Although if you'd ever change your mind, I'm really easy to find."

He didn't get up, content to lay on the ground for now. He'd have a few bruises later, and his leg still hurt, but he felt...pretty okay. All things considered, this was a nice afternoon. "Besides, all things considered, this is kind of mild. The last girl shot me."

Lochlann flinched after he said it. He'd already shown her his leg, so it wasn't like it was a secret, but admitting it was a slightly different thing. It was marked on his hospital records as a botched suicide attempt, but that was a lie. Still, most people weren't willing to believe him.

"We don't need this anymore, do we? So I'm going to wear it now if that's okay."

"By all means," Lochlann said. He didn't watch her put it on, closing his eyes again instead. "I think we can just carry the sheep out of here. He seems a lot tamer than I expected. If I would have known that, we wouldn't have had an issue to begin with. Do you want to take the sheep home, or should I?"

Adelene also paused hearing that revelation about his gun wound. After fixing her belt, she settled down and reached out to pat Lochlann's head, and ending up ruffling his hair and bangs. It was pretty soft. It was so soft, she didn't want to and couldn't stop petting him slowly.

She smiled gently. "I won't shoot you at least. I don't know pretty much anything about you yet... but you don't seem like such a bad person."

She regarded the lamb and chuckled. Yup, things wouldn't have ended up like this if they knew it wouldn't run away. "Hmm... Do you want it? Don't you think it's best if we return it to its flock instead though?" She actually thought it was a good idea to just return it. She didn't know how to take care of pets, after all.

Her fingers were in his hair and Lochlann's eyes were starting to get heavy. He finally gave up and closed them, his body relaxing completely under her touch. He was a little embarrassed, but he really didn't want her to stop.

Lochlann laughed a little, but it was sleepy. "I've seen you shooting. If you shot me, I wouldn't stand a chance. It's probably a good thing you don't know much about me--I have a bit of a reputation."

He found himself wondering a lot about her. For example, what sort of girl knew how to handle weapons like she did? Or could throw an awesome punch like that? He wanted to ask, but wasn't sure how to phrase the questions without being awkward. So tell me your life story please is a little direct.

He made a noise of curiosity but was distracted by the sheep.

"Hmm... Do you want it? Don't you think it's best if we return it to its flock instead though?"

"If there's any of the flock left," Lochlann said, without opening his eyes. "I sort of thought we'd get more than one when you started to whistle. We had like 300 when they were on fire. I guess we could look for them. I just don't want to see anything happen to it."

He hesitated and then said, "What was your life like, before you came here? I used to work on a farm. I kind of miss it sometimes. It was peaceful."

She wouldn't have stopped stroking his hair. But she was a bit too shocked to hear that there were about 300 sheep before. And the idea of the fire put her on slight edge. "I think it's still better if we try to look. Animals would fit best in their natural habitat... That's what I know, at least."

She was going to resume petting him, really. But she froze again upon the next question. She froze much longer than the first one, and if Lochlann would just open his eyes, he would see the pained expression she was giving him. Furrowed brows, a frown, and eyes instantly shimmering with tears which were starting to form.

That was the only forbidden subject when it came to her. She didn't want to let anybody know of her past, nor was she planning to open up to anybody. Even to her current best friend, she hasn't really said a thing about it.

She didn't want to talk not because the story was painful-- although it was-- but because she was afraid to show any vulnerability. To her, it meant she had to trust a person. And it meant that person would know too much about her, and that could be used against her anytime. She didn't want to risk it. And she didn't want to get attached to too many people, only to lose them anyway in the end. Opening up was always the first step to attachment.

This was where she always draws a clear line.

"It was hard, that's all I can say." She shifted away from him, pulling away her hand so she could just sit there beside him without making contact. Hugging her knees, she muttered a dismissive, "I don't want to talk about it."

"I think it's still better if we try to look. Animals would fit best in their natural habitat... That's what I know, at least."

"I know what you mean, but sheep are sort of dependent on people to take care of them. It's sort of fascinating how they've been domesticated," he said.

His voice had the soft quality of someone almost asleep, so it took him a moment to sense the sudden awkwardness that permeated the air. He blinked once, twice, as she pulled away.

Was that...tears?

Oh shit, he'd really fucked up. It didn't' look like she was crying, but like she was about to start, and the sight of someone like Addy brought to that state hurt Loch worse than being punched in the gut.

"It was hard, that's all I can say." "I don't want to talk about it."

"Oh, Addy," Lochlann said, his voice still soft, but now it was less from sleep and more the way someone would talk to a small animal that wasn't an asshole lamb. "I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have asked. I wasn't thinking."

He rolled onto his side to face her, propping his head up with one elbow, flinching a little with the movement. He wanted to go over and pull her into a hug, but the way she'd pulled away seemed to indicate that she didn't want contact, and Lochlann wasn't ready to get punched again.

But...shit. He was an asshole.

"Did you ever hear about the sheep that was raised by border collies?" he asked instead, very slowly, very hesitantly, reaching out to put a hand on her ankle. It was the most innocent place he could reach from this angle, and it still gave her the chance to pull away if she wanted.

Adelene flinched, but she didn't pull away. She tried her best to stay still, because she didn't want to punch Lochlann again. Damn her fast reflexes.

And damn her stupid past.

She was silent for a few moments. Her mind was slow to respond, having been forced to remember a different kind of suffering, but she eventually turned her head to Lochlann and realized the guy was trying to... change the subject? That's good.

She gave him a small, almost unnoticeable smile, and shook her head. "What about it..?" She tried to respond normally, even though she didn't seem like she was going to move anytime soon.

When she flinched, Lochlann withdrew his hand, resting it close by. His side was hurting him, so he rolled back onto his back to start talking.

"It was pretty cool," Lochlann admitted. "The sheep would wag it's tail and try to vocalize like a dog. Instead of being herded, it helped the dogs do the herding."

Lochlann tried to sit up, but it made him dizzy, so he settled for sort of propping himself on his elbows. He kept talking while he looked around, finally remembering where his bag was.

"Did you know sheep actually have really long tails? We have to dock them so they don't get infested with um, poop, and maggots.... But when they're not gross it's really cute."

He pulled his bag towards him with his foot, grabbed another bottle, and took a mouthful before flopping back down onto his back and handing the whole thing to Addy. He really wanted to hold her but didn't think that was an option, so this was the closest he could offer in comparison.

Adelene chuckled trying to imagine everything Lochlann would tell her. Sheep were adorable. It was regrettable how she's never gotten to live a life with them. She was slowly relaxing again as Lochlann kept speaking. She even uncurled herself.

"Sheep are cute, and every part of them," she said, smiling wider. But that smile dropped when Lochlann grabbed his bag. He seemed to still be in pain. She shifted to face him again, meaning to keep him down, but she instead had to hold the bottle Lochlann pushed on her.

She gave him a confused look, and then looked at the bottle, before turning to him again. "Hey, don't move too much. Your side's still painful, isn't it? Don't force yourself."

She didn't know what to do with the bottle. Did Lochlann want her to drink, too? She took a single gulp, before setting it down on the ground somewhere they wouldn't accidentally hit it. And then she decided to lie down to join Lochlann, though there was a pretty decent space between them.

"Don't feel bad, okay? I know you were just curious. I just don't feel comfortable with it. It's practically my own fault that I got upset." She was on her side, facing Lochlann. She reached out to his head again, and gave him a soft pat. She was getting addicted touching that hair, honestly. "I'm sorry..."

"Sheep are cute, and every part of them,"

"That sort of makes me feel even worse for having eaten so many of them," he rubbed his face with his hands, giving a slight guilty laugh.

She seemed to be starting to perk back up, but maybe he'd made a mistake by handing her the bottle? She looked confused.

"Hey, don't move too much. Your side's still painful, isn't it? Don't force yourself."

"I'm fine," he said, waving his hand like he was wavering her worries away. "Besides, a few more sips of that, and it won't hurt anymore. Trust me on that one."

Still, she took a sip and laid down next to him, and for some reason that made Lochlann relax. He felt weird laying down while she was sitting up. For some reason, it reminded him of being in the hospital.

"Don't feel bad, okay? I know you were just curious. I just don't feel comfortable with it. It's practically my own fault that I got upset." "I'm sorry..."

She was on her side facing him and then her fingers were in his hair again. Lochlann made a soft noise in the back of his throat, something akin to a horse's whicker although he tried to stifle it. His eyes closed again.

He was seriously getting why unicorns were always laying their heads in virgins laps. Before he thought that was because they were perverted, but now he totally got it.

"No, it's my fault, I shouldn't have asked." Lochlann's mouth twisted into something between guilt and embarrassment. "I mean, I should know better. Someone asked me something personal and I jumped out of the window....in the middle of class."

He was thinking about making a bad decision and closing some of the distance between them, but the lamb saved him from doing anything stupid by plunking down between the two, demanding to be petted.
