He turned his head to the side, unsure what Khmer was. A magical set of skills or something? When Makara told him it was the language of Cambodia, he found that interesting. He'd never had the chance to learn another language. How many other languages were just under his nose? "You must have a really big class if you're teaching a language!" There wasn't a hint of sarcasm. Who wouldn't want to learn what people say when they speak. Roman wouldn't have to hear a flurry of letters which made no sense to him.

He was so naive it was almost physically painful, and Makara couldn't help but wince slightly. Not even close. He tried to be gentle when he responded. "Khmer is not a very popular language. It has little use outside of Cambodia itself, so it's really only spoken by Cambodians." And the Cambodian population existed almost entirely in Cambodia and the surrounding countries. Some had fled overseas, but the last thing those people wanted was to maintain a culture that had been so thoroughly damaged.

"People would rather learn a language that is more widely spoken, like Chinese or Spanish." Specific languages that had little use outside their home countries were rarely popular, with Japanese as a notable exception.

Why did he seem upset? The excitement died down, and Roman wanted to say sorry, but didn't know if it was fitting. He was glad Makara filled the gap with the explanation. "Oh, I see." He was guessing that this teacher was from Cambodia, since he taught the language. That, or he loved learning unique languages.

Chinese or Spanish? Hmm. Hola. Adios. That was pretty much it. He wondered how else Makara spent his time. "It sounds fun to learn a language." He believed that. A language would be a good thing to do to pass time while acquiring knowledge.

Lots of people liked learning languages, and he nodded at the admission that it sounded fun. "It can be fun, but it's a lot of work." And not for everyone. He'd had to learn English himself, and even with that... well, he still couldn't quite read English. Only bits and pieces.

"You should choose a language when you reach highschool." He seemed so young. "The school has a much wider variety of them than most schools." People said that a lot, although Makara had never attended a school elsewhere.

"My school didn't teach languages," Roman agreed. High school was often when languages popped up, he supposed. Maybe he'd find a unique language. Many people knew French... he wondered how many knew Khmer. His guess was my very many. But then, why wait? Roman, however patient he may seem to be, was as impatient as the next person. "Maybe that's because we were too small though..." He added the comment thoughtfully. There was much time left in his life. Multilingualism was not the only aim he would find along the way, and he had a good few years left before high school to decide what he wanted to do.

"I imagine it's mostly how the teachers are allowed to choose. There's only a few mandatory classes. There's no way you could make a curriculum with how much variety there was." Powers classes, magic classes, classes on species and worlds and stuff. There was no way you could easily organize that, so classes ended up being 'whatever you wanted to teach', no matter how much demand there was.

"It's never too early to learn. There are lots of books in the library that will give you a nice start." Even if he couldn't likely enroll in high school level classes at his age. "When you're not studying." He added, almost as an afterthought. He was a teacher, and he should be encouraging good study habits, not encouraging Roman to sneak off and read a bunch of books on language.

Grant found himself above deck again, walking around near the ship's small gambling room. After flashing the bouncer some ID, the old pirate walked inside to play a bit of Roulette.

Just because he was here for the school didn't mean he wasn't allowed to make some cash in the process.

"17 Black."

Aaand it starts.

"There is so many classes," Roman agreed, almost without thinking. He couldn't even begin to list how many teachers (and subjects) there were. Of course, there were more students, but there was also no way one person had the brain capacity to learn everything. They had to think about what they thought was important.

Never too early to learn? Roman liked that idea. He decided Makara was right, the quicker he began learning, the quicker he could start learning something else. But he did have to remember his classes too. "Yeah. Library." He hadn't done much in the library. There was a lot of books. And CDs. In fact, there was pretty much everything. Roman had never thought about learning, voluntarily, in the library. "That's a good idea."

He'd obviously given the young boy something to think about, and he gave him a small little smile.

"The library at the school will no doubt have everything you need." He said reassuringly. "I should go finish making my rounds." He was supposed to be doing things, after all, and he couldn't afford to just stand around talking all day. He gave Roman a small bow and another little smile, and then set off to head around the ship.

"Yeah," Roman smiled back, assured and pleased with himself for making small talk with an adult. Very mature. It was a shame Makara had to depart, but he understood. Grown-ups got busy an awful lot. "Goodbye." He nodded, receiving the bow, and bobbing his head back, before Makara left.

Looking around, he still didn't see anybody his age. Instead, he decided to pop down to his cabin and get a book to write notes on the triangle.
