The boy exchanged a sulking expression, but Joshua was distracted with how he grasped tighter onto his mother. He seemed overly attached to her and that annoyed him a great deal.

Perhaps it bothered him so much because it was just another obvious fact that separated them further. He had no attachment to his mother...

He kept... trying to connect them in some way... because of his interest in the boy. But try as he might... he could not discover a reason why he felt connected to him.

[color=647d32]“Thank you, sir,”[/color] Brendon returned rudely as he frowned back at him... showing not an ounce of gratitude.

Joshua couldn’t even relate to the boy’s anger...

[color=083901]“You’re very welcome, Brendon,”[/color] he returned with his own hidden aggression.

With that he was turning away from him and entering the back room, but he kept the door propped open.

“You’re very welcome, Brendon.”

Brendon could feel the hair against the back of his nape standing on end as he
could feel as well as see the aggression within his piercing gaze. The sixteen
year old’s cheeks instantly darkened and he squeezed his mother tightly, pressing
his face into her side in angry defiance.

However, as soon as the man was entering the back room of his store, his
mother was immediately speaking to him and chastising him for his extremely
inappropriate behavior.

“What has gotten into you, Brendon?” She said disapprovingly. “You are being
exceedingly rude and I will not tolerate such behavior.”

Brendon felt the weight of her words sinking into him, and he struggled between
his overpowering feelings when around this man and his overwhelming need to
satisfy his mother and listen to everything she tells him.

“I—I’m sorry, mother,” He returned, his voice small… and meek. He was left to
stand on his own, without the comfort of her hand or her arm around him. S-She
was angry with him… and Brendon found himself looking down in shame.

Joshua left without hesitation and moved to the back of the storage room to open the back entrance door for Brendon so he could enjoy the chilly Autumn air. The only way to circulate air through his shop was through the front and back doors. The windows in the front were all merely display and could not be opened.

He let out a sigh of frustration, but wasted no time retrieving the chair next. His mind however was occupied with this unexplainable connection he had to Brendon. He could not decipher it.

Joshua could already feel the cool draft beginning to fill the back storage room, but his attention was brought towards the door as he listened to Brendon’s mother chastising him for his poor behavior.

She seemed to hold a very strong authority over her son... and that was finally... something he could relate to.

[color=647d32]“I—I’m sorry, mother,”[/color] Brendon returned... his voice shameful and meek.

Joshua’s grip against the side chair tightened and he found himself frowning... He shouldn’t have caused any trouble for the boy...

He appeared at the door frame after a moment and held within his hands the large brown leather chair<a href='http://media.tumblr.com/47a14f145379ea16a6663c9016dd4a5a/tumblr_inline_mv8qnbVg0W1s9nudo.jpg' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>*</a> that had once been placed out in the main area of the bookstore. It was in much better condition than the rest of the store and was properly cleaned like everything else.

[color=083901]“Where would you like to sit?”[/color] Joshua asked Brendon and looked to him, but did not strain with the weight currently in his hands.

Brendon was immediately aware of the moment the bookstore owner returned,
but he kept his gaze downcast and toward the old wooden floor beneath his feet.
He was still upset, but refrained from being rude any further. Unfortunately, the
man was addressing him again… and Brendon reluctantly lifted his gaze.

At first, he hesitated as he took in the leather chair he was holding for him… and
then, slowly, his gaze lifted to Mr. Ardel’s face. He did not want to sit in his things
that smelled like him. He didn’t want to be in this store and close to him…

But, the man wasn’t doing anything at all. He was helping him and being courteous
to both him and his mother. There was no reason for him to dislike him… There
was no reason for this behavior…

“Here is fine… thank you,” He returned lamely, his gaze lowering once more… and
he frowned off to the side. His presence made him nervous… It made him jumpy
and flighty… and even despite all of his logic… he still wanted to escape through
the front door.

Brendon slowly lifted his gaze and stared up at him, but the look he gave him was no longer rude and instead defeated. Joshua felt his heart squeeze... and he was reminded of himself as a child...



Was that their connection?



No, Joshua didn’t believe this boy’s life was anything like his own childhood. The woman Autumn had shown kindness and warmth towards her son. He was merely grasping at nothing now.



[color=647d32]“Here is fine... thank you,”[/color] Brendon returned and slowly stared back down towards the floor waiting.



Joshua set the chair down and closed the storage door to contain the cold air that had accumulated while he had the backdoor open. He had closed it for Brendon, because he knew that the boy had no interest in fresh air...

“All right, now you sit and stay right here, where I can see you, Brendon,” His
mother quickly told him, and didn’t hesitate to usher him forward and get him
situated within the large brown chair.



Brendon gathered his long robes and made sure he was seated correctly, letting
them back down and pulling on his sleeves lightly before he briefly glanced to
his mother once more. Within all of these hectic feelings… the only one true thing
he could grasp onto… was his mother. She was his only safety…



Yet, she was leaving him… and hopefully Mr. Ardel… in order to go
about her shopping within the bookstore.



“I, I will see you when you are finished, mother,” Brendon returned and
pressed his lips firmly together. His gaze faltered… a-and he didn’t dare look
to the owner again. Instead, he quickly glanced down into his lap and… and
absently played with his sleeve.

Joshua watched as Brendon’s mother aided him with his robes... and he felt himself beginning to close off. He could find no logical explanation as to why he felt connected to this boy.



They had never met before and the two of them virtually had nothing in common. He had met others who could relate more to him than this boy and yet... none of them mattered.



He wanted to know more about this boy... but information didn’t feel like enough anymore. He wanted his company so he could learn why this boy stood out among the countless people he had met...



He needed something solid to grasp onto...because he wouldn’t blindly follow his feelings. His emotions were utterly unreliable and useless... Joshua was far too broken because of his past... and what he had to endure growing up to ever trust his inner feelings.



[color=647d32]“I, I will see you when you are finished, mother,”[/color] Brendon’s voice withdrew him from his thoughts, but his time near him was coming to an end...

“I’m looking for educational books,” His mother explained to the store owner.
“Eleventh grade educational books,” She went on to tell him and moved to open
up the small purse she was wearing in order to pull out an envelope and take the
neatly folded paper from inside.



She unfolded both sides in order to share the list with Mr. Ardel.



“I wasn’t certain whether or not you sold educational books,” She confided to
him, glancing up toward him with a polite smile. “We’re new to the island and
your bookstore was the first I could find.”



Brendon continued to frown and stare down into his lap… nervously fidgeting
with his robes.

Interest immediately struck him again because he realized just how much he was learning about Brendon. Eleventh grade meant he... was either sixteen or seventeen years old...



His emerald gaze lowered to Brendon and he was surprised. The boy looked to be much younger... He was also home schooled by his mother too...



It seemed as if the two of them were very close... or rather closely in each other’s company. Autumn began unfolding a paper and revealed all of the books she was interested in buying.



He briefly glanced over the list and continued to listen as she explained that they were new to the island.



[color=083901] “I should have everything on that list, but the books are heavy,"[/color] he warned, but then added almost coaxingly, [color=083901]"If you like I can deliver them all to your home, free of charge, of course.”[/color]



Just... what was he doing...?



Joshua knew... exactly what he was doing... He was trying to find out where they lived... But why what purpose would that serve? It would bring him no closer to the boy...

Autumn Matthews hesitated for a moment, her hazel eyes scanning briefly over
the paper before her. She could agree with the man that the books were heavy,
and that she would have many to bring home with her.



“Yes, thank you very much, Mr. Ardel,” She finally decided, glancing toward him
with a warm smile. “I will take you up on your offer. I was also looking for a
couple of recipe books as well.”

Brendon couldn’t help but glance up and look between the two when he heard the
offer. His heart clenched and tightened, b-but…— Brendon’s eyes widened… and
his cheeks instantly darkened… as he was caught within Joshua’s piercing emerald
stare.



The sixteen year old’s heart began to pound, his cheeks growing hot. Again, he
found himself instantly effected. His gaze faltered and he quickly looked away,
to stare down into his lap once more. H-His heart was going wild…



A-And he could hear his mother now, a-accepting the owner’s offer to bring their
books to their home.
