Joshua needed time to think...

The woman was thanking him again and he indifferently turned to face her and her son. But his attention was immediately and inevitably drawn to the boy.

He was making faces at him... like a child.

“It’s hard to believe you’re in grade eleven, Mr. Brendon, when you’re making faces like that.”

He was being spiteful and purposely causing the boy grief with his mother. But he would not put up with such rude behavior.

Joshua’s patience had already run dry.

I'M STRUGGLING TO FIGURE OUT WHO I AM, CHAINED BY THIS FEAR INSIDE
and i'm being drawn to you.

“It’s hard to believe you’re in grade eleven, Mr. Brendon, when you’re making
faces like that.
” Mr. Ardel immediately returned a moment after witnessing
his many faces. And Brendon’s heart instantly skipped a beat, his eyes widening
and his cheeks darkening with color.

He grew even further embarrassed with his mother’s attention quickly moved
back down to him with surprise and displeasure.

“Brendon, I will not tolerate such behavior,” She chastised him firmly in her
disapproval. “You will apologize to Mr. Ardel right now.”

Brendon fumed, his face on fire, a-as that… t-that stupid man… got him into
trouble! His heart was pounding and as he glanced toward his mother, he
flushed further with shame. He knew that he was being disobedient. He was
being a disrespectful son.

“I apologize, Mr. Ardel,” He returned a little stiffly.

“Brendon Matthews,” His mother warned him and Brendon flinched, his gaze
directed at the man who was responsible for all of this.

He took in a deep breath and bowed in ‘sincerity’ in order to give a more
appropriate apology to someone who didn’t deserve it.

“I apologize, Mr. Ardel, for being so rude as to make faces at you.” He told him
and lifted back up from his bow. “It was extremely rude of me. Please, forgive
me.
”

Despite his words, his gaze showed another emotion entirely. He was raging
inside and not sorry in the least, and he wanted Mr. Ardel to know as much!
Sorry my butt, you stupid old stinky man…!

Joshua watched... with unseen satisfaction... as Brendon reacted to being called out in his improper behavior. But not only that, his mother was now forcing him to apologize...

He was being cruel... but he didn’t care...

‘I want him to apologize for being so rude...’ he thought to himself and inwardly smiled...

Joshua waited patiently, and his expression was no longer stern or indifferent. Instead he looked mildly pleased with himself... as waited...

“I apologize, Mr. Ardel,” Brendon returned begrudgingly, but was immediately reprimanded by his mother.

“Brendon Matthews,” Miss Autumn scolded... and Joshua glanced to her... as she revealed the boy’s last name...

His attention was stolen by Brendon... when he bowed elegantly. The gesture caused his heart to stop momentarily...

Joshua’s gaze became captivated by him as the boy apologized again... but he no longer wanted his apology... but something more.

T-The bookstore owner was looking at him in the same way he had been earlier,
right before he had touched his chin, right before he had tried to kiss him.
It made Brendon flustered, embarrassed, and all the more angry all at the
same time. He wanted to angrily stomp his foot in his annoyance and frustration.
But, his cheeks were on fire and his body was hot all over. He also wanted to run
outside, into the cool air.

“Good day, Mr. Ardel,” He said to him stiffly, his cheeks alight. H-He didn’t
hesitate to grasp onto his robes and storm out of the store. His heart was
pounding wildly within his chest—m-mostly because he knew of how much
trouble he was going to be in. H-He had never acted this way before…! H-His
mother was going to be very, very, angry and upset with him.

B-But, he couldn’t… He needed to get out of that bookstore!

Joshua could see the anger within his gaze, but he was no longer scornful to his strained aggression. Instead he felt drawn to it... and wanted to finish what he began when he held Brendon’s chin captive...

His attire only accentuated what was already there...and Joshua like any man... was enticed by what he desired...

“Good day, Mr. Ardel,” Brendon told him stiffly and then proceeded to grasp his robes and exit the building.

Joshua turned and watched him leave... but was still seemingly speechless. He wanted to reach out and grab him...

He wanted a great deal of things... that he had never before wanted...

But...he would not allow himself to give in to his desires...
