Brendon closed his eyes and waited...for what he knew was coming... but the meeting of their lips never came. Joshua unwillingly heard his mother returning and he instinctively drew away...

He frowned and felt his temper almost revealed itself, but he regained control of his senses when he realized just what he was becoming aggressive about.

He... had tried to kiss Brendon... and he was angry because they had been interrupted...

What had just transpired between them?

Why... had Brendon so willingly await his mouth...?

Joshua took in as slow breath... and felt... off balance by all of this... These emotions that he felt towards the boy were dangerous...and had just proved to be uncontrollable as well...

“I’ll need to look over that list again,” Joshua spoke up, his voice a little off, but he kept his presence calm and controlled. He immediately stepped forward and protectively blocked Brendon from her view as she stepped out into the open.

M-Mr. Ardel was immediately stepping in front of him to greet his mother, and
Brendon was… was completely shattered when it came to his composure. His
cheeks were on fire and his heart was pounding. J-Just what… w-what had…

The man… The man, he… he had leaned down to… He had touched him… had
tilted his head up t-to kiss him. Brendon clutched so tightly onto his robes that
he was in danger of ripping them apart.

“I’ll need to look over that list again,” Mr. Ardel was telling his mother… and his
mother was talking to him once more. But, all Brendon could focus on was…
w-was what had almost happened.

H-He was a very bad man, indeed…

Autumn was handing him the list... but Joshua was stepping closer and actually gesturing for her to follow him behind the bookcases.

“Right this way,” he told her and then began to lead her towards the category that withheld the books she was searching for. He hadn’t forgotten which books she was interested in buying...

Joshua had merely created a distraction for Brendon... because in this moment the boy was more than exposed... He was protecting him... and it almost made him scoff out loud... how noble.

His eyebrows drew down into a frown as the woman stepped forward and he didn’t hesitate to look to Brendon once more. But his gazed instantly softened as he took in his flustered state...

Joshua had to force his gaze away however and follow in behind Miss Autumn... before he lost himself again...

Brendon’s heart continued to pound within his chest… as he stared after that
man. H…He couldn’t see his mother. But, he could see… how tall the man was,
how imposing… He could smell him… his scent still filling his senses. He trembled
softly… and allowed his gaze to falter… and he, instead, stared down into his lap
once more.

However, he could feel his gaze… and a moment later… he found himself glancing
up and being captured within the man’s alluring gaze once more. Brendon… stared
back, his eyes slightly widened, unable to look away… He was confused, but also
drawn…

Ardel was who he had… introduced himself as. This was his bookstore; Ardel’s
Bookstore. He had expected a different name, although he had no idea what
that different name could have possibly been.

As if he could sense his gaze... Brendon looked to him and they shared another intense moment. The boy was confused as he should be, but he was also...enticed by him... and that held him captive.

He knew that Brendon couldn’t look away... and that his mind...was on what he had just tried to do to him.

He had tried to kiss him...

Joshua forced his gaze away from him and followed in behind his mother. He finally understood why he had taken an interest in Brendon. It was because he was attracted to him...

His gaze hardened a little...as he thought about how... simple that sounded. Although, he had never been drawn to anyone before... He still had expected something more, rather that his body just... responding and trying to take control of him.

He was irritated in himself for not knowing...

But... he was more angry... that it was nothing more... than a foolish attraction...

The spell was broken the moment the man glanced away from him, and Brendon
was left to silently watch as he turned to accompany his mother… and disappear
from sight. The sixteen year old could immediately feel a sense of… loss… as he
was left all alone. But, oddly, it wasn’t a sense of loss because of his mother’s
absence…

Brendon directed his attention down to his lap once more… and he stared at his
robes, at the design of his belt and sash. His fingers curled into the thick
material of his garbs as he clutched at it tightly… out of his anxiety and
nervousness.

He… He should definitely still want to leave the store. Especially after what
Mr. Ardel had almost done in the absence of his mother’s watchful eye. I-If
she knew… she, she most definitely would never return here again…! He…
He should be appalled by his… b-by the man’s… advances on him.

Brendon recalled the man’s deep voice, his whisper, as he told him that he was
very beautiful. And, with embarrassment and also anger, he wondered if the
man looked at him like a woman…! It was these thoughts, and many others,
that were buzzing around in his head when the two finally returned.

Joshua had no interest in having a partner, male or female. He had never been interested or drawn to anyone before either. It was not something he thought about or ever cared for. He had no secret longing or desire when he saw other’s together.

Then why—why was he suddenly interested now in a boy who was still in his teenage years...

Joshua had made a fool of himself by trying to kiss him... what could he have possibly been thinking?

Nothing it seemed and he would not stand for such stupidity. He would not be controlled by his bodies urges.

That was solid within his mind...

When all the books were gathered and within his arms... the two of them made their way back to the front and Joshua purposely kept his gaze away from the boy.

He set all of the books down and began proceeding to add the total amount for all of them...

Brendon kept his gaze lowered and riveted on his lap as Mr. Ardel and his mother
emerged. But, the moment the owner of the store walked passed him… h-his
stupid scent… k-kept… coming…! Brendon’s gaze flickered up and toward
his mother. Her gaze was on him and she was immediately, silently, chastising
him about bunching his robes together.

He flinched a little and frowned, upset to be chastised so much today. Slowly,
he released his robes and then silently, and secretly, sent a glowering face toward
the man responsible for everything that had happened. It was all his fault.
He was a bad man. A bad man, indeed.

Slowly, his eyes lifted and he immediately caught sight of Mr. Ardel frowning at
him. Brendon could feel himself flushing with embarrassment, but he was also
riled by his own temper and it caused him to quickly turn his head away in a
silent ‘humph’ of rejection and disapproval.

He tensed a little... and felt as though Brendon were looking at him. Joshua glanced towards the boy and immediately caught him glaring daggers into his back.

Moments ago, Brendon had been completely flustered, but now he had gathered himself and become angry at him. His temper was childish and so was the manner in which he jerked his gaze away from him. But Joshua had seen the immediate flush of embarrassment from him...and knew that despite his anger... Brendon was still affected by what he had done...

Slowly, he looked back to his mother and told her to total of her purchase, and then waited for her to pay...

Joshua... could still feel his attraction for Brendon... each and every time he looked to him... and restraining himself already felt exhausting. He never thought that he would be one... to strain in resisting something he found desirable...

He thought he had more control than that...

Brendon would have continued angrily ignoring the owner of the store had his
mother not moved before the register with a clear line of vision to him and the
way he was misbehaving. As a result, Brendon quickly (although reluctantly)
looked forward once more with a much more… neutral… expression.

He blinked a couple of times and focused on his mother, hoping that she hadn’t
seen his display of bad mannerisms and that he had gotten away with it. Mr.
Ardel—that bad man—deserved it, anyhow!

His mother paid for her large purchase and then turned toward him, lifting her
hand and calling him to her side once more. Brendon had to suppress a frown
and keep himself from glaring as he slowly, and stiffly, got to his feet and made
his way past that stinky old man and to his wonderful, beautiful, mother.
