An elderly woman currently stood before the cash register and seemed to be patiently waiting. She held no interest in Joshua or obvious resentment. She was a regular and the type of costumer he preferred. She never tried for conversation with him and only spoke when it was absolutely necessary.

“Thank you,” she replied simply when Joshua gave her the book she had just bought and with that she left. His emerald gaze moved away from her and towards the windows once more as he took in the autumn colors again.

Whenever fall came... this was all he seemed to do. There was nothing truly on his mind as he stared outside and watched the leaves blowing in the wind...

Brendon kept his amber gaze lowered, trailing the brick lain walkway underneath
his soft padded shoes as he walked behind his mother. The air was crisp and cool,
a light breeze bristling the handful of scattered trees within the center of the city.
He didn’t like change… it was difficult to cope with. Their move from Iowa to this
island out in the middle of the ocean had jarred the sixteen year old’s senses. He
had been filled with anxiety and tension from the moment they had begun packing
their bags.

The strain of his emotions pressing down over him had made him even quieter
these past few weeks. The alienation he felt was suffocating him. His inability to
even recognize himself, and who he was, was a knife sinking deeper and deeper
into his heart. His mother was different than him… She was so strong, so self-
aware, and confident.

She held her head high as she strolled down the streets of this foreign city, a
warm and kind smile pressed to her lips. She walked with an air of ease and
comfort, with tranquility, and it… it was something he had never possessed.
Some days it was difficult to cope with his inner turmoil and his endless
struggling. Today was one of those days…

His mother paused to reach over and take his hand in her own, and then without
a word—but a warm smile that said more than enough—she brought him forward
and into an old, almost abandoned looking, bookstore. The moment the two of
them stepped inside… the floorboards creaked underneath their weight and
Brendon’s nose immediately tingled with the smell of the old mustiness of the shop.

Joshua’s gaze immediately drew away from the window and off to the side the moment two people entered. He stared blankly towards the wall and paid them no mind.

The doors closed behind them and the floorboard creaked in their presence, but none of that caused him to look to them. It was the peculiar scent that instantly filled his bookstore...

Despite his dulled senses... the smell was powerful...

Joshua’s emerald gaze immediately riveted on the source... a boy... that looked... like nothing he had ever seen before...

“Good morning.”

A strange… scent… warmed and tingled his nose. The smell distracted him,
momentarily, although it was faint. Masculine. It was lingering within the old
bookstore… mixing, and overpowering, the mustiness he had first sensed.

His amber gaze flickered toward the man behind the register, belatedly realizing
that his mother was greeting the man. They were the only ones within the shop,
from what he had been able to see.

Joshua said nothing to the woman who spoke up beside the boy because he felt awestruck. A feeling more than foreign to him...

When the boy’s amber eyes connected with his... Joshua felt his gaze lull slightly... as if soothed by the vibrant color...

“Good morning,” he returned, but not to the woman...

Brendon was instantly greeted with piercing emerald eyes, staring directly back
at him. “Good morning,” The man returned, his voice deep and rich… and Brendon
instantaneously jerked his startled, wide, gaze away from the man. His heart had,
all of a sudden, gone off in a wild, beating, frenzy.

His mother was leading him away from the open part of the room to search
the large bookshelves lined on the right. And Brendon found himself internally,
secretly, grateful. His nerves had been… jarred. A vision of the man standing
behind the desk had been printed into his mind, and he couldn’t shake his piercing
gaze or deep voice.

Joshua watched as the boy jerked his gaze away from him... and amusement immediately struck him. But his daze began to fade as the woman began to lead him out of sight.

He frowned... displeased and even irritated with the woman. The emotion was rather normal with him, but reasoning behind it was not.

Still, he began to act upon the strange interest he had with his new customer instead of coming to reason or logic.

Joshua made his way towards the area they had disappeared and for once in his miserable life... offered his service.

“Perhaps, I can assist you in whatever it is you are searching for... Miss—”

Joshua purposely drawled out the last part... intending on learning her name.

His mother browsed the categories of the first large case of books before she
began to lead him around and toward another section of shelving. However,
they were intercepted by none other than the store owner himself. Brendon
instantly felt his heart jump and his gaze quickly fell, feigning interest with the
floorboards before him.

“Perhaps I can assist you in whatever it is you are searching for... Miss—,”
The man’s voice was as deep and… startling as before. His scent was powerful…
and he wondered if his mother could smell how powerful it was as well…

“Autumn,” His mother introduced herself and offered her hand. “Are you the
owner of this bookstore, Mister…?”

Autumn,” she returned with ease and raised her hand to him. The gesture caused him to inwardly tense, but he restrained from displaying any emotion as briefly shook her hand. He was portraying a facade in order to acquire more information about the boy...

“Are you the owner of this bookstore, Mister...?”

“Ardel...” he returned, but his gaze was no longer on her... but the young boy beside her. Who he had already presumed to be her son... “And I am...” Joshua answered her previous question and noted that the two of them were holding hands.

Slowly he forced his gaze back towards hers. “It is nice to meet you and your son—” Joshua began trailing off in the same manner he had before...

“Ardel…,” The man returned, and Brendon found himself wishing that their
conversation would end and his mother would take him from the store.
He… He didn’t like being so frightened and intimidated by someone. It was
unnerving, and he found he didn’t have the courage to look up from the floor…

Nevertheless, he could feel the man’s gaze on him, penetrating through him.
He could smell him and feel the heat of his presence. D-Did his mother find
him dangerous as well…?

“It is nice to meet you and your son—,”

Brendon’s timid gaze flickered up toward the man, but only for the barest of a
second. To his immense relief, he hadn’t been staring back at him… but it still
hadn’t given him the courage to continue looking.

“Introduce yourself, sweetheart,” His mother told him, her hand releasing his
own in order to press against his back and push him forward a step.

Brendon’s heart immediately leapt into his throat and he sucked in a sharp
breath. His nervousness amplified, b-but he quickly lifted his gaze to look at
the man in complete distress.

“B-Brendon, sir, it, i-it’s nice to meet you.”
