It was a peaceful morning. There weren't too many people in the hallways, the sun was not yet high, not yet piercing, the birds' chirping were mild and distant, almost inaudible.

It was silent. Only clicks of reloads and gun hammers filled the quiet air of the laboratory. And Adelene had the place all to herself, at least for this moment. She was expecting a teacher in a few minutes, but for now, she was going to take her time inspecting the different available rifles and guns, their bullets, how to load them, etc. Of course, firing them would have to take place in the shooting range, but she needed permission from an authority before she gets access.

She already knew most of the weapons present. From handguns to large rifles, she had good knowledge about them all. And those that she didn't know yet, she made sure to inspect them closely, so she can add them to her collection. To weapons she can summon. And she'd kill time doing so, not realizing that her alone time was soon done.

Grant yawned as he strolled into class, right on time. He never really worried about when he came in since he never actually had any students, but he liked to remain punctual. He took a swig from his flask as he passed through the doors, sitting in his chair and kicking his feet up on his desk. Rose flew off his shoulder, sitting on her perch. Grant wasn't paying attention to anything- or anyone for that matter- that was sitting in the class. He never had students, so why should he? He simply unslung his blunderbuss from his back and started tinkering with it. Rose took this moment to squawk at Grant.

"Skrawk! Boots on the deck, boots on the deck!"

Grant glanced up, and was genuinely surprised to see Adelene sitting at one of the small lab tables that lay in his room.

"...An' who the 'ell are ye?" He asked. "You lost?"

The rifle Adelene was holding fell to the table when the bird spoke. No, she didn't sense them arrive immediately; she had been too caught up fiddling with the weapons, and anybody could see that with all the parts and wholes all over her table. She was genuinely flabbergasted, and for a moment was frozen in place, until the pirate person addressed her with a question and she tried to pull herself together to answer it.

"Uh... I'm a... student, sir..?" she assumed he was the teacher, but because of his appearance, his speaking and his speaking bird, she was having second thoughts. "I want to learn more about guns so... I enrolled in this class."

Grant stared at the girl, blinking. A student? The good captain hadn't had a student for- what, five years? Well, stranger things had happened. Grant mused out loud for a second.

"Well, I suppose, thass possible." He said, before standing up, moving in front of his desk. "Get'cher self over 'ere, fron' an' centa." He said, leaning against his desk, crossing his arms over his chest.

Rose spoke up from her perch.

"Skrawk! Capn's orders! Capn's orders!"

"A-Aye!"

The girl grabbed her bag from below the table and scrambled towards the front row, center, right on the opposite side of the teacher's table. She stood straight and stiff. She was getting anxious, because the teacher seemed like a strict guy, and unorthodox, and she wasn't sure they would get along. She always got along with teachers, but... she could never be sure for the next one she encounters.

"..."

What now? she wanted to ask, but she can't quite bring herself to speak. Teachers might not like it when their students talk without permission, so until she was sure where she can stand on that ground, she was going to play safe.

Grant began to look her over, looking the girl up or down. He muttered something to himself as he did, before returning to his spot in front of his desk, pulling a very old flask from his jacket and taking a swig.

"So," He began, slipping it back and tipping his hat up, his visible eye staring into her own.

"What be yer' name, lassie?" He asked gruffly. She certainly looked the part, and Grant could see she at least knew the basics, judging from the rifle she was messing with. Maybe she'd be the one to last longer than three days.

For some reason, that flask of what seemed like liquor eased the air around Adelene. Maybe because she was so familiar with such a thing. She blew a small relieved sigh, her shoulders loosening up.

"Adelene Cross, Sir-- Cap'n-- uh..." She rubbed her left arm thoughtfully. No idea what's the better way to address this man: 'Sir Mackenzie' or 'Captain Mackenzie'. 'Captain' sounded much more like him though. "How am I supposed to call you, sir?"

She smiled sheepishly while looking him in the eyes. More than anything, she was excited to find out what kind of things she'd learn in this class and she can't wait to get started. "Also, I... almost thought I mixed up my schedule when I got here and no one was around. Aren't.. there... other students..?"

"Capn' Mackenzie, or jus' plain capn'd be fine, lass." He said, crossing his arms and smirking, his one visible eye meeting hers. He did seem amused, at the least. He paused when Adelene mentioned the lack of students.

Then he laughed, loud and boisterous. He slapped his knee, almost doubling over. A few seconds later, he regained control of himself, responding.

"Lass, I 'aven't 'ad a student for well over a year now. Not one tha' lasted anyway." He chuckled again, finding it funny.

Adelene didn't understand what was funny. She figured that it was her question, but she could not see any reason for that to be a source of good laughter. For a good few seconds, she simply watched the captain exhaust his laugh, her eyebrows were furrowed above her nose in a very confused manner.

And then she got it. With an enlightened "Ohh..." she realized she was probably not in a very good place after all.

But she wasn't going to give up on this class, no matter what happens. She was a good student. Studious, responsible, skillful. What could go wrong? Besides, she loved to be in this class. Gunsmithing was something she's wanted to do.

Her confusion vanished and was replaced by a confident smile. Not proud or bragging, just capable. "I'll do my best to stay," she told him. "Captain, I enrolled because I want to learn, and I won't be going anywhere until I gain all the knowledge and skills this course offers."

Grant listened to the girl talk, and the pirate let a grin spread across his face as she spoke.

'Maybe she'll be the one...' He thought, before smirking proudly.

"Well lass, if yer goin' ta be in me class, let me tell ye th' rules." Grant stood up and cleared his throat.

"Ye will neva be late. I won't tolerate lateness." Grants voice took on a tone of deathly serious. "Ye'll do exac'ly as I say, no mussin' about. No. Fire. In th' workshop. Are we' clear?"
