Alec's been roaming around the school campus again. There really was no reason to it; he simply enjoyed taking walks during the night, because he cannot do so during the day. He went wherever his feet took him, around the dorms, inside school buildings, or outside. He stopped this walk at eleven, taking a seat on a bench in the flower-filled courtyard.

His voice softly and subtly echoed through the campus the whole time. As always, it was as if the wind willingly took it everywhere for him to be heard. For his lullaby to be heard. And this lullaby, along with his own form of mild hypnotism, was perfect in urging tired and sleepy people to just go to sleep. His voice was also the reason he cannot be punished for breaking curfew. Anyone who ever catches him won't be able to say no after hearing his whims and wishes.

A long and quiet sigh marked the end of his song for tonight. It was a sigh of content after being able to take in such cool and fresh air, and after he's let out the beautiful melody that kept his mind occupied.

<i>"Beautiful,"</i> a voice in his head commented. Paradox. Of course he had been listening.

"Did you like it?" Alec mumbled. He leaned back against the bench, and looked up at the stars. "I wonder if someone else heard it, you know, without falling asleep."

<i>"I don't think so. You've been doing this for weeks, and nobody's ever found you out. They might even mistaken you for a ghost."</i>

"Being outside at night is nice and all, but what's the fun in it if we're always alone like this..?"

Cabel could not sleep.

It's not that his eyes wouldn't shut and his mind wouldn't drift away; if he tried, Cabel would absolutelyy sleep. it was that he couldn't sleep because he had shit to do, people to see, money to make.

All night, it was a struggle to keep his eyes open. He didn't know what it was---he'd had an insane amount of coffee and mountain dew, and at one point he even mixed the two together--but right now he was just struggling to get back to his room.

He decided to cut through the courtyard early, though, just to save himself some time, and was happy to hear what sounded like two people chatting somewhere. He thought tonight was going to be a bum sales night.

Cabel rounded the gardens and came across a gentleman sitting on a bunch, alone, in the middle of the courtyard. Unlike Cabel, he seemed more awake. The alchemist gave a yawn, covering his mouth, and then approached.

"Yo, hey,"
he said, frowning. It was the worst greeting ever.

Cabel had an unlit cigarette hanging from his mouth. It was his calling-card to tell interested parties he was carrying.

"You're up late," he said, realizing he'd never seen this man before. It wasn't implausible--there was a lot of people on this island--it's just that Cabel thought of himself as being familiar with most people, especially those out at night. He was trying to gauge this guy's motives--was he waiting here for Cabel? It wasn't exactly unknown that Cabel would cut through the courtyard on the way back to the dorms. "Where you...waiting for someone?"

Alec flinched. He hadn't been paying enough attention to his surroundings, and was unable to sense the approaching guy. He only turned his head though, not really wanting to move from his relaxing position on the bench.

His eyes widened for a very brief moment. He wasn't expecting to see a person in the same age group out there at night. And he was glad about it. When he realized that, he quickly leaned forward, shooting the guy a smile. "No, I was just taking a walk. I'm resting here, before I go back to my room," he answered.

He scanned the guy a bit. Was that cigarette in his lips? Was that allowed in the campus?

"How about you? Where did you come from and where are you going?"

<i>"Oi, careful now,"</i> yet again, he heard Paradox's voice in his head. <i>"He's kinda suspicious if you ask me."</i>

"No, I was just taking a walk. I'm resting here, before I go back to my room," he answered. "How about you? Where did you come from and where are you going?"

Cabel eyed him suspiciously for a moment—but only a moment. After all, it wasn’t uncommon for people to be out at night—Cabel was a prime example of that—he just wasn’t exactly used to running into the kind of people who weren’t waiting for someone or doing something.

"Do you mind if I..?" Cabel motioned to the space on the bench besides the boy.

"I guess I can't really say anything, I'm about doing basically the same thing," Cabel admitted, though he did not admit that his nightly walks usually had the purpose of making him some money or some clients.

"I was going to bed because I'm tired as hell, but I don't think I'll be able to sleep," Cabel explained. "Besides, it's nicer out here at night anyway. During the day time there are way too many people."

He perked up suddenly, as though he was excited to tell this boy some secret. "There's a rumor that it's haunted out here, at night. People have reported hearing someone singing, but no one has ever been found, so it's natural to just blame it on ghosts. I've never met a ghost--have you?"

He realized he might be rambling, which probably had something to do with the amount of caffeine fighting his body right now.

"Oh." Alec immediately moved a bit to give more space, and patted that space urging for the guy to take it.

What an interesting man, he thought suddenly. He decided not to use his ability to make the guy tell him what he was really doing outside, even though he really wanted to know. The cigarette was already giving some kind of clue anyway.

<i><b>"There's a rumor that it's haunted out here, at night. People have reported hearing someone singing, but no one has ever been found, so it's natural to just blame it on ghosts. I've never met a ghost--have you?"</b></i>

Alec momentarily froze, his eyes were wide for a moment as he stared, surprised. "A... ghost..?" he asked, letting the thought slowly sink in.

Paradox burst into laughter in his head. And so did he. As his face relaxed, his laughter echoed in the area. His voice did not sound ordinary, because of how smooth it felt in the ear, and the echo made by the walls gave it a ghostly effect.

"So people do hear it!" he said, even as his shoulders shook. Eventually, his laughter toned down to giggles, and then faded away entirely. "No, I've never met one. But people say I look like one. I guess I don't mind being mistakenly known like that."

<i>"Alec, we can scare people at night if we wanted to."</i>

<i>Eh. No.</i>

Alec held out his right hand to the other guy."I'm Alec, by the way. What can I call you?"

Cabel took the seat next to the pale boy eagerly, letting out a contented sigh when his feet got off the pavement. That was the one downside of doing all your work on foot.

"A... ghost..?"

Cabel nodded and then the boy burst into laughter, which surprised Cabel so much that he dropped the unlit cigarette into his lap. He picked it back up, tucking it into his shirt-pocket, and leaning back into the chair, trying to follow the boy's reaction.

The couryard definitely distorted voices. Cabel had goosebumps.

"So people do hear it!.....No, I've never met one. But people say I look like one. I guess I don't mind being mistakenly known like that."

Cabel misunderstood. "So you've never met a ghost but you've heard it then? That's freaking sweet! my biggest disappointment since coming to this island was the fact that I still haven't met a ghost...."

He thought for a moment, running through the list of things he wanted to experience since he found out how penchant for chemical cocktails had more to do with magic than being talented at chemistry. "...or dragons, or like...I don't know, a flying pirate ship. How about you? You been here a while yourself?"

Alec held out his right hand to the other guy."I'm Alec, by the way. What can I call you?"

"Oh shit, sorry man, I have no idea where my manners are," Cabel took Alec's hand, giving him a firm shake in response. "My name is Cabel. Cabel Sokot."

He hesitated for a moment, waiting to see if any of his infamy was familiar to Alec. He was well known for being the kind of guy who could get you whatever you wanted.

Alec saw that Cabel misunderstood, but his laugh remained a grin, even after they've introduced themselves to one another. And, obviously, he didn't know anything about the other guy. He has, after all, only been here for a few weeks, with not much acquaintances or information.

"Nice to meet you, then," he replied, before letting Cabel's hand go. Nope, Alec had no idea who he was.

"Sorry to disappoint you... I guess I HAVE heard something, but... Dunno." He shrugged. He was still smiling, obviously trying to tease a little, even though he was pretty sure Cabel might not get it. "Well, it's only been a couple of weeks since I got here so... there's still so much I don't know, and so many things to find out. I haven't seen any dragon or floating pirate ship either. Though honestly... I'm not sure, do those stuff really exist?"

"Nice to meet you, then," Alec responded and dropped his hand a moment later, and Cabel found himself relieved that, if Alec knew who he was he gave no indication.

"Sorry to disappoint you... I guess I HAVE heard something, but... Dunno."

"I think it's great," Cabel admitted. "Although I think I've only heard it once, and I might have been dreaming then. I get so sleepy sometimes."

"Well, it's only been a couple of weeks since I got here so... there's still so much I don't know, and so many things to find out. I haven't seen any dragon or floating pirate ship either. Though honestly... I'm not sure, do those stuff really exist?"

"The other day I accidentally caused an explosion in the chem lab when I forgot that I let unicorn tail cook for too long....so if Unicorn hair exists, then unicorns have to exist, and why not dragons?" Cabel shrugged. "If they'd be anywhere I suppose it'd be here."

He thought about what the other boy said and then, because it was late, and he was caffeinated, he found himself asking a question he might not have otherwise known. "Did you know you were...different, I guess, before you came here? I mean i'm opperating under the assumption that you're a student and you got the same letter I did."

Alec shifted his legs a little, swinging them lazily as he hummed and thought. "Hmm... I guess so," he answered. He seemed indifferent about it, though. "I wasn't always like this. Got in an accident before acquiring my ability. It didn't really give me any disadvantage though. My ability isn't so complicated, and it's beautiful that way. It's just that... people thought I was crazy because I always had conversations by myself. So when I got a letter I told myself, 'why not?' and thought... maybe Paradox and I will..."

He paused. It's not that he didn't want talking about Paradox or he didn't want people to find out. No. But he felt like he needed to stop there. And Paradox agreed.

He put on an apologetic smile, and waved his hand dismissively. It was a good thing Cabel seemed half-asleep already. "Sorry, was I too talkative? I think I'm enjoying your company. Ahaha..."

"Hmm... I guess so,

He was humming and swiinging his legs, but there was something about the tune that he was humming that sounded strangely familiar to Cabel. He found himself yawning, even though his left leg was bouncing against the ground.

......
"Sorry, was I too talkative? I think I'm enjoying your company. Ahaha..."

Cabel listened with interest, nodding his head in the appropriate spaces, resting his head in one hand, his elbow propped up on his knee.

"I didn't think there was anything special about me until I got the letter," he admitted, shrugging. He probably sounded a bit sad, especially when he sighed. "I just thought I was finally good at something and boom! Here apparently it's an extra ability. Sort of sucks a little."

Now he laughed, returning Alec's apologetic wave. "Now I'm the one talking to much aren't I? It's cool though bro. It's nice to just talk to someone this late at night, who isn't drunk or looking to score. Seems like those are usually the only ones up."

Cabel said, sort of absentmindedly, referring to the boy's slip of "paradox and I" earlier, "Did you come to the academy with a brother or someone?"

He shifted again n the bench, tapping his other foot now, drumming his fingers across her knee. "I left a sister behind, well my whole family, but my sister is the one I really miss. She was in elementary school. Bright kid. I don't think she has any powers. I wonder when I'll be seeing her again."

The night was clearly making him introspective, or maybe it was the combination of the song interacting with the caffeine flooding his system.
