Jae can shift between human and merfolk forms. His merfolk form consists of his normal human torso and arms. Gills grow on his neck, and his face remains mostly the same with the exception of frilled ears with sensitive webbing. In addition Jae’s hair shifts to bright red in color. The biggest change is the shift from legs to a long and powerful tail. The main color is an iridescent, shiny blue with green and yellow in the highlights. Jae’s tail is covered in long, elegant beta-like fins that shift from teal to bluein a soft gradient. The fins are hemmed by a band of rusty red.
While in this form he can propel himself at great speeds through the water (and flop about on land) and has heightened electrolocation and hearing. Along with an increased resistance to electricity and the cold.
Siren Song
A primal, deeply magical song pulled from deep in his being. Jae must maintain concentration to sing and the sound of his song is carried best by the wind or water. It can be heard a half a mile away. Only those within a hundred feet, however, feel the mind-effecting compulsions of the song. Those who listen to the song here lyrics personalized to their own desires and the intent of the song. To those immune to magic hear the song is heard as an indistinct but beautiful melody.
The siren's song can do one of three things depending upon the intent Jae puts behind it. Individuals with strong willpower may resist the effects.
Storm Caller
Jae can manipulate the weather to a degree. He can not call thunderstorms in the middle of a clear day, but can nudge current weather in the right direction. The more likely there is to be rain that day, the more effective this nudge is. The nudge acts like a dice roll, adding to the chance of stormy weather. If he nudges every day, he could cause days of rain a week later. If he nudges every day for two weeks then he can cause a moderate thunderstorm. This ability is not powerful enough to call any stronger weather.
The second part of this ability is that he can generate electricity. The more rainy and thunderous the weather, the more he can generate. On a normal, sunny day with no chance of rain he can produce enough electricity to give someone a solid shock. This shock is hurtful, but not damaging. During a thunderstorm he may generate enough lighting to produce a single 30' bolt.
Hydrokinesis
Jae can manipulate water by imbuing his voice with magic and concentrating. With this magic song he can move up to 1,000 gallons of water and freely manipulate it into various shapes and length. He can only manipulate this water if it is within 30' of himself.

Jae can sense bodies of water within two miles of his person. He can tell the difference between fresh and saltwater, and size and depth. This is a general feeling, and is never exact.
Tears to Pearls
His tears turn into pearls shaped like tear drops. These pearls range from white to light blue depending upon his reason for crying. Pale blue for sadness, spoilt cream for pain, black for anger and pure white for joy.
Electrolocation
While submerged in water, Jae can sense the electric field generated around living creatures that move in water up to a distance of a hundred feet. In mer form the distance extends to a mile.

Jae needs to douse himself fully in water once a day or else he will begin to dehydrate. While dehydrated, Jae will slowly become weaker. Starting with a loss of strength, then coordination, and on to a weakened immune system. In addition, his water sense ability kicks into high-gear, overpowering his normal senses. The presence of fire can increase the speed of dehydration, and if he is damaged by fire his active abilities are greatly weakened until that damage is healed.

He can ignore this for a night, but on the second he’ll begin to shake and his magic burns him from within. Like being cooked from the inside out. He’ll slowly lose his ability to think rationally, and his siren song will ring in his ears. Jae doesn’t want to give into this dark nature, or become someone dangerous. Thus, every other night Jae must find an isolated location to use his primal magic.

They lived in a rural part of South Korea, close to the ocean. Jae grew up normal, just another kid who made friends, had hobbies and went to school. He never met any of his other family, and was told they lived too far away to visit. This always confused him, as everyone else at least knew of one other family member, or could communicate with distance family through phone or internet.
Around the time he turned twelve, his uncle received a new job in Hawaii. It was a rough transition for Jae, who was completely unfamiliar with western culture and could only speak very limited English. It left him feeling helpless, to be pulled away from his home and friends for a strange place, but what could a twelve year old boy do? They made the move and Jae had to deal with it. It was around this time that he noted odd changes starting to occur. He needed to drink more water than ever, and his acne completely stopped.
His aunt and uncle loved him deeply, and though they waved off his concerns, he could tell they were worried about something. As he aged they would ask if he ever felt a desire to go to the ocean. Jae would lie and say he didn’t. He couldn’t explain the pull he felt, nor the growing desire to sing. His body continued to change, growing more beautiful over time, and drawing more unwanted attention to himself. Everything came to a head on his sixteenth birthday where the latent magic in his blood fully awakened.
Jae woke up to find himself neck deep in the ocean. He was scared, panicked even, but kept going. Moving further into the water until the current picked him up and carried him deeper. He did not drown, but instead shifted into his mer form. The rest of the night was a blur, until the morning where he was found by his real aunt. Taliah was a mermaid and his mother’s younger sister. She told him of his mother, his birthright, everything. The two returned to land together, and she told him there was a place where he would be safe. Life among normal humans would be dangerous for him now.

His uncle and two aunts sat down together and agreed that Manta Carlos would be the best place for him. He will go to the academy there. He would be staying with his real aunt, who kept a home on the island. Jae packed his things and quietly moved to the island.
