Once upon a time, Jude had been very near to the ideal model student. He'd worked hard. He'd done all his homework on time. His grades had been great, but not the top of the class. He'd participated in extra-curricular activities, but any time he'd done anything competetive he'd always seemed to be near the top, but not actually at it.
Really, that was the story of his life: Doing well, but never drawing any attention.
Manta Carlos was going to be different. For one, he had Giltenn, who was in everything but name an honest to god personification of knowledge. For another, he had a perfect memory. Jude could read a list of formulas and remember each and every one of them perfectly for the rest of his life. He could read through a history textbook and perfectly know every single name and date. Everything he read, he processed. Everything he read, he remembered.
It meant he was going to be bored to tears in some classes, which is why he was there. He wasn't quite sure how they were going to handle it, but there had to be something they could do for him, right?
So he'd explained the gist, and then he'd been told to sit and wait while the accommodations counselor handled someone else.
Not being actually in school, he'd forgone his uniform in favor of a hoodie, one that hid all but the bits of silver on his face, and that on his hand. Jude liked to think he looked pretty normal, all things considered, even if he'd never have passed in the narrow reality.
