Emily stepped out of a bookstore and into a bustling sidewalk. She had come out to get a new fiction she'd been looking forward to, but had also found herself enthralled with a couple of new manga's and graphic novels she hadn't seen, as well as a set of stylized tarot cards by a fantasy artist. As a result of this, she'd spent more time here then she'd intended too... and also more money. She really needed to stop buying everything that caught her interest

Curling in on herself a little as she navigated the crowded street, she began heading back in the direction of the dorm. It was slow going, as she was both going out of her way to not be in the path of other people, and slowing down and sometimes doubling back when she found a taste she liked lingering off of someone. Progression was made gradually, until a large crowd suddenly filters down the path. Emily squeaked a little and dodged behind a decorative pillar jutting out from one of the buildings. This is when she saw it, a lovely, frilly red dress, covered in red and black lace and made in some Gothic fashion, sitting in the window.

Emily usually wore practical clothing, but that didn't mean she disliked wearing dressy clothes. She just sat there, trying to envision how that dress would look on her, what she might wear it for, a dance perhaps, or some party like in her novels. She caught herself daydreaming and shook her head to clear her mind. She wouldn't have money for such a thing, so she turned to leave, but hesitated and glanced at it one more time...

A little behind the display was a short girl with stark white hair. She just came out of the changing booth in a frilly, icy blue dress that brought out her eyes.

Lei didn't feel good doing this, not because it didn't feel right, but because it did. Little boys should wear shirts and pants. Dresses are for little girls. Any deviations from that were abominations and laughing stocks, and if there was one thing Lei feared, it was getting treated like a joke.

What did his secret gift giver say? Lei shouldn't be afraid to be himself. And in the immortal words of Kamina (fuck you Elias), "believe in me who believes in you." And that guy believed, whoever he was.

Lei swiped his bangs out of his face and looked at his image in the mirror. He didn't look... that bad. An attendant walked up to him and slapped her hands together, cooing at her. Lei immediately blushed.

"I think you should take that, Miss. You look adorable!"

"I, um..."

Lei's eyes darted everywhere, trying to find an excuse not to pay, when he saw a girl that looked a lot like one of his classmates looking straight at him. Shit. Oh shit. Did she notice? Lei bolted into a dressing room and changed into his usual hoodies and pants, handing the dress to the attendant. He left the store in a hurry.

"Look, whatever you think you saw, that wasn't —!"

This girl...

...was not one of his classmates.

Fuck his entire house.

Lei's face turned beet red. "Sorry. I-I thought you were someone else."

Emily shook herself from her daydreams only to see them come to life, well, sort of. She saw Lei step out of the dressing room looking absolutely amazing. The shy girl watched Lei curiously as they examined themselves in the mirror, glancing between them and the dress she had been admiring. Her courage was slowly growing as she watched, until Lei spotted her. Immediately her face turned a bright red and she turned away from the window, fidgeting frantically as her eyes darted about the sidewalk.

How could she be such a creeper? Emily was so embarrassed right now. She should just go home and pretend this hadn't happened. She was just about to step back into the throngs of people when Lei spoke to her, rushing out of the store to her. Her eyes locked onto him for a full second before darting about again as Emily curled in on herself. "I-I-I'm s-sorry... I-I d-didn't mean to st-stare..." She fidgeted with her hands a lot as she tried desperately to come up with something to say. "Y-You... you were... v-very pretty..."

She shouldn't have said that. That wasn't a thing that helped the situation. A savory taste with just a hint of strawberries suddenly filled her mouth as her embarrassment grew to a level were she could taste it. Emily was forced to just stare at the ground, making a distressed "Aaaaaahh..." sound as her own emotions locked her in place.

"Very pretty", she said, and he wondered if she knew about... He felt embarrassment rise to his face so he pulled his hoodie up higher, nervously fixing his turtleneck. He wanted the ground to break open and eat him, but it looked like the girl was having a much worse time than he did.

Shit. He hated this part. He was going to have to be the bigger man, wasn't he?

Lei waved his hands in front of her, circling to her side so she could pat her very gently on the shoulder. Was this working? Was this how being a comforting human being was like? Like hell did he know. But he was at least doing his best.

"It's... ok? Don't... be cry." Pat. Pat. Pat. God, he must look like the world's biggest douchebag right now. "I'm... not mad? I just... mistook you for someone else. Errr."

Emily licked her lips and fidgeted, eyes darting all over while only occasionally examining Lei. She could taste the embarrassment emanating off of him almost as strongly as her own. She began to calm down a little at this revelation, just focusing on breathing and letting herself come down from the franticness.

Lei managed to get a giggle out of Emily with his awkward attempt at comfort. It wasn't bad at all, and Emily could taste his remorse so she understood, but there was just something funny about it. "...D-Don't be cry? Y-you're not very g-good at this, a-are you?" That wasn't to say it hadn't worked. She was much calmer now and had been cheered up.

Emily took a step back and turned to Lei again, fidgeting with her hands a little. "I... I think w-we need to start o-over..." She gave a small smile to Lei even though was still sort of a ball of shy. "...I-I'm Emily... I-It's nice to m-meet you..."

Lei let out a sigh of relief. She wasn't mad at him. Thank Mountain God.

"Yeah, I'm about as comforting as a bed of needles. But it worked, so I wonder what that says about you." He grinned, placing his hands on his hips. Man, this girl. Lei was never really this shy, but he was socially awkward, so he wondered if this was how his friends felt about him. He felt like he should give them an award or something. 'Thanks for putting up with the biggest asshole on the planet, I hope you guys make better life decisions in the future and exchange me for a better friend.'

"I'm Lei. It's, uh... good to you, Emily." He slapped himself mentally. Wow. Congratulations, you're making yourself look more of a jackass. He craned his body and turned around. "You were looking at that shop?"

Emily giggled a little bit again, licking her lips a little. "W-Well... I guess you're l-lucky I can taste r-remorse..." She started fidgeting again. "I-I mean... n-not just... I-I can taste... o-other things t-too..."

She turned back towards the window, twisting the handles of her bag in her hands. giggling again as Lei flubbed the greeting. "y-yeah, I saw this d-dress in the window, and it looks lovely..." A slight blush crept over her features and she averted her eyes again. "I kind of..... wanted to... t-try it on... i-is all..."

She looked at Lei again, still kind of shyly. Lei was pretty interesting since his emotions shifted so drastically. "I-I mean... y-you looked nice in one of their dresses... w-well not that y-you don't l-look nice w-without one but... y-yeah..."

Lei squinted. Taste remorse and other things? Was that... innuendo? Did he need an adult? He nodded, muttering a soft but dismissive "uh-huh" since he really didn't want to know.

He looked at the store wistfully again. They did make cute dresses. He was going to admit that much. That was why he went there in the first place and tried that stupid dress on. It was such a dumb shit idea! He knew he was going to get caught. Now people were going to think he had some sort of fucked up forced feminization fetish. Ugh. He felt himself blush at the compliment. There was some part of him that knew he was pretty cute and he can pull stuff like that off, but that part was always immediately silenced by overwhelming self-hatred.

"I'm not some weird pervert, ok." I'm a girl came immediately after, which he shut down pretty quick because like hell was he actually a girl. "You can try those on too. They're not going to make you pay if you just put the stuff on for five minutes."

Emily took a small step back. "Wh... What?... Wh-Why are you s-s-suspicious... D-Did I do something wr-wrong?...." Emily fidgeted a little bit, until the conversation moved on to an equally uncomfortable topic. Em just tilted her head, her eyebrows pressing together slightly in a confused expression. "I... didn't think y-you were..... Do you f-feel like you a-are one for some reason?" Therapist mode engaged. Emily wasn't trying to be either cruel or accepting with this question, she just actually hadn't clued in yet.

She stared at the dress again, think over what Lai had said. "Y-Yeah... b-but... Oh! I-I know!" She turned back to Lai and skipped closer, just outside of his personal space. "W-Will you come try them on w-with me? I-It's no fun if no one gets to see it...."

Lei hugged his arms close to his chest and looked around for people he might know, blushing profusely. Emily poked a sore topic, here. He wanted her to pick up the clues but it looked like she was too dense to figure it out.

He stepped closer, keeping his voice down so people wouldn't hear. "In case you haven't figured it out yet, I have a dick and I shouldn't be trying on dresses so. I..." He liked the dress store. He really did. He just felt queasy about doing it again, especially now that he knew people could see him. "...I'll come with you. If anyone asks, I'm your friend and you dragged me along to shop, ok? And if anyone asks about seeing me in a dress, tell them they're crazy, I'd never do that."
