The library, aside from its purpose as an archive of knowledge, served as a refuge for those who didn't quite connect with a lot of people. It was quiet most of the time, and the atmosphere made for an easy, distraction-free haven. But a few weeks ago, it was a site for exchanges. Gifts, cards, roses, chocolates, she'd seen people give them away. When asked about it, her mother told her that it was a tradition among people on that specific day. One question lead to another, but the answers were something she understood but couldn't comprehend. This was something beyond definition, something she, at least for the moment, couldn't fully grasp. Perhaps it was something that needed to be experienced? Whatever the case may have been, Belladonna went to the library to get to get some insights on emotions and feelings. She thought she knew what these were, but now she wasn't so sure. Perhaps she had to start at psychology. She picked out a few books at random on the subject, piling them up on one arm like the books weighed no more than a feather. There was one that caught her eye that made her think for a moment. From the cover alone, she could tell that it was one of the thesis of someone who had probably already graduated from the school. It was an analysis of the movie I, Robot. This was definitely not in the right section, however, the name of the movie inspired a little curiosity as she could remember watching it in one of the mansion's disks. Perhaps... this insight could be useful?

The school's library was the closest thing to their dream on this island. The books here didn't float around when called. The library wasn't so tall as to require flight to reach the top shelf that didn't exist. Nevertheless, it was close enough. It was large with people entering and exiting at all times, occasionally offering the not-so-strange look at Sela. Those looks that were once strange quickly became normal.

Point is, the library was a safe place to be. Unlike a mall, libraries were quiet. Places of solitude and relaxation. Malls and libraries had their pros and cons, and right now, Sela needed the pros of the library. They also needed some books. Preferably one with plenty of pictures.

They floated high through the air to the psychology section, only pausing when they lowered themself to see the sight down the aisle.

A young woman holding a tower of books with one hand. There was no struggle to carry them, only simple inquisitiveness as she looked for the next book to take. She seemed knowledgeable on this aisle.

"Excuse me. Do you know any good facial expressions and body language books with pictures?"

"Mh?" Belladonna turned to see another person, one that looked like a piece of the night sky with illuminated clouds. She thought for a moment on her inquiry as she added the thesis on top of her pile. "I think I picked a book with that," she'd say, turning her pile so she could read the spines. "Here's one," she quietly said, kneeling down to put the pile on the floor. She carefully picked out the book and offered it to the other person. "Are you... learning about people too?"

Sela took the book and flipped through its pages. It was good enough. Typical of an academic book, there were way more words than needed. Accompanying every picture was a couple of paragraphs.

"Thank you," whispered Sela. "I am... I have classes to teach me but I want to self-study too. I want to go out and talk to people more... while being more like people." The young woman didn't look any different from a human. Maybe she was trying to learn how to interact with the non-humans here.

"I see. I didn't think to take those classes. My mother taught me everything about manners, how to talk to people and how to be polite about it, including how to act around others. But, there are still some things I don't have a deep understanding about." She took out a book from the pile and showed the starry person the cover, which showed that it was a book about emotions. "I know the meanings, I can tell what people are feeling if they don't actively try to hide it. Like when someone smiles and the corners of their eyes turn up as well, then you know its genuine. I can pick up those motions, however I'm only acting on what I see. It doesn't seem genuine." She looked to the other person and asked, "Do you have that problem too?"

Family again. Whenever Sela ventured out into the world, they were faced with people talking about the benefits of their family or how they wished for a family. Not becoming envious was difficult.

They floated closer to the woman and leaned over to take a better look at the cover, then backed away when a small voice in their head reminded them of personal space. "I do... I don't have a mother to teach me stuff. I have my dorm parent and minder and teachers. They teach me everything I need to know. Memorization is easy. Understanding is hard. I don't have a need for body language or facial expressions, nor do I need them for hunting. My... head isn't like people here. I'm not people. Does that make sense?"

Belladonna nodded. "I understand," she said, putting the book back into her pile. "I'm not a person in the way the people on this island are neither. I'm not made of flesh, unlike my mother. I wasn't made from magic, like a few of the students here. And although there are others like me, they aren't familiar at all." She gazed up at this other person. "That is why I'm trying to learn more. Because I see vastly different people together, and I find myself needing to do the same."

Sela wanted to emphasize the point that they were not a person. Belladonna may be a person in a different way from other islanders here, but Sela wasn't anything close to a person. "I'm more of an animal," was all they said in response to that.

"I don't know when I'm made of. I was in my head and then space, so I made my body looks like space. One idea is that I'm made from dreams because of my powers. What are you made of? You look very human to me."

Belladonna looked around, seeming a little cautious when she was asked what she was. When she saw no one else, she said, "I am made of metal, plastic, wires, circuits and synthetic skin. She looked at the space person with a burning question on her mind, but chose to postpone it so they could introduce themselves first. "Oh, since we've been talking at length, I should give you my name. I am Belladonna Evita. It is a pleasure to meet you."

Confusion flashed on Sela's face. They looked around when the woman did. Whatever she was about to tell must have been a secret she trusted them to keep.

But when she finished talking, nothing said felt worthy of caution. "Ah... I'm Sela. It's a pleasure to meet you too," they replied. "Um, is being a robot bad? You looked worried someone would overhear." Or maybe not worried enough. Or not worried at all. The two of them were in a library. A very quiet library where whispers could be overheard if focused on. Not to mention people with hearing much more advanced than a human. People like Sela.

No, "people" wasn't accurate.
