The look on Sazz's face said she didn't even really have to ask the question. He took a deep breath and exhaled. Then started packing his stuff up without a word. Then after a couple moments when he'd mostly finished he looked at Wednesday with a smile that was somewhere between amused and menacing. It was definitely an up to no good face, but then if you thought about it Sazz's face is always on some level of up to no good on it.

"Of course I wanna try it. Are you sure you wanna sit by and watch me do my thing?" he asked for his own confirmation. "I guestimate with me doing this spell there's about fourteen percent risk that comes with it. I might zap off my skin or something."

Wednesday rolled her eyes at that face, standing up herself with a huff.

"Do I look like I want to just sit and watch?" She said, sounding almost indignant, that curiosity sparkling in her eyes . "I think I know a few ways to help stabilise the magic so that it does what you want. I'll need to borrow some reagents from the magical theory classroom, maybe read over the books a few more times just to make sure..."

She kept muttering to herself as she stuffed her own books into her bag, Frodo sat up from his comfortable little perch, and meowed.

"I know what to get." She said at him, before looking back at Sazz. "But uh, yes, I think I can keep you from hurting yourself too much. You mind borrowing a practice room while I get my things?"

"Well that's not... nevermind," he sighed and finished collecting his stuff. This was still in the testing phase. so he needed to see how the spell would work. And of course Wednesday wouldn't just want to watch him perform the spell. He was also just a little bit concerned about what could happen in the off chance the spell didn't do what it was meant to do and the last time Wednesday had experienced that.

"Huh... if everything goes well, then that won't even be an issue," he replied, there was confidence in his voice. "But that's cool of you so thanks. I'll go ahead and grab us a room."

And without saying anything else, he headed out to grab them said room.

She watched him head off, packing the last of her own things as Frodo stood straight on the table next to her. Neither of them made any noise, but Wednesday could hear what he was thinking. She let out a small sigh.

"It's going to be fine," She murmured, quietly. "I'm not going to improve by not practicing, right?"

The cat just stretched its legs, before hopping up into her backpack. She began to make her way out, depositing a few of the books into the return slot as she left, mind already doing some magic equations in the back of her head as she calculated what she needed.

The risk was always there, of course, but she kept her mind off that for the moment. She knew how to make things stable, knew how to make sure the spell went off properly. She could make it work.

She would make it work.

What use was she if she couldn't manage one spell without a screwup?

——

After a while, she made her way over to the practice rooms, her books swapped out for some reagents for her preparations. She set her bag down near the door, Frodo hopping out, the tip of his tail dipping into a jar of crushed powder before he ran off to the far side of the room.

"All set?" She asked Sazz.

Sazz wasted no time in grabbing the first available room he could. He went about making the preparations on his end while he waited for Wednesday to get there. He had a pretty good idea of what all she was getting for the test run of this new spell and figured it wouldn't be much longer.

When she did arrive, he perked up and smoothed out his eyebrows. "Yep got everything set up here. What'd ya grab?"

"Just something I put together," She explained as she herself moved to the centre of the room. She squatted down, the tip of her finger beginning to glow. "It's a ritual component mostly made of things like ashes, animal entrails, a few crushed plants from the forbidden forest..."

She rattled off the list as she began to draw, explaining the process keeping herself calm and her hand steady. Her hand slid around her, drawing a wide magic circle on the ground. Frodo, with his tail coated in the powder, drew similar smaller circles on each wall.

Eventually, she stood up, gesturing to the glowing space.

"Ok, if you stand in there it should help keep things stable." She took a few steps back to make space. "So um...I guess the rest is up to you if you're ready."

"It's so nice to have someone have my back," Sazz grinned, giving Wednesday a little pat on the shoulder, then he moved to the center of the room. He'd already set up a target, and the spell was thoroughly prepared on his end. Wednesday's contributions would definitely help.

He'd set up a ball as a target, recited the incantation, then cast a purple bolt of lightning at the target using his index finger.

Nothing happened.

Well not immediately...

The ball seemed to stir a bit. The ever present grin on Sazz's face widened a bit as the ball manifested a sinister little face made from the lightning animating it, and started bouncing around. "Oh, oh man."

He grinned at Wednesday, while the ball seemed to roll and bounce around on its own. Almost like it was exploring the room. "Well it works!"

That was...well, she thought it was pretty underwhelming, actually. Especially after all that preparation she'd put into it. She takes a few tentative steps, standing next to Sazz as Frodo creeps towards the ball and starts sniffing at it.

"Is it, you know, sapient?" She asked, watching it go. "Does it do anything...?"

Sazz shook his head as he looked on, clearly excited about this. The ball would roll back away from Frodo, then roll in for a tackle of sorts at the cat. Not exactly harmful, but enough to elicit a more direct response.

"It's not sapient, no. It does have a tiny piece of me in it though... take that how you will. This was one of the more basic spells I came across, definitely could use some tweaking and all but I think it turned out decent for a first go," he snapped a finger, and the ball rolled away from Frodo and over to where Sazz was standing, as if awaiting orders.

Frodo hissed loudly, tumbling along the floor as the ball tackles him, his arms swatting ineffectually at its side. Wednesday has a small giggle at their antics.

"Well...I guess that makes the first spell a success." She said, smiling a bit wider as she crouched down to inspect it more closely. "Looks like you're off to a good start with this stuff."
