It was at the point that he caught the slightest glimpse of the creature that Sazz realized he was in the exact kind of situation he hated. That feeling of powerlessness. That no matter how much he gained he could never overcome this creature. It was like when he got possessed at Dark Crystal Academy. All he could do was follow Wednesday's lead. And at the moment that just meant holding onto her while she scribbled down her glyph.

He was already sticking close to her anyway so he moved to grab onto her. Hopefully even keep them both secure should Wednesday lose her grip. It was in her hands now, "Whatever you're doing, do it fast!"

She scribbled fast, rapidly calculating the weight of the two of them to adjust the spell for the distance they had to move, barely managing to focus through the terror that gripped her from the thing who's area of influence was steadily creeping towards them.

There was a sound, almost like a crack as the air that had been occupying the space behind them seemed to drain away, spiralling into the warped space of the creature, the sound rapidly getting closer and closer towards them. Even with as fast as Wednesday was scribbling the spell felt like it would take years to finish.

But soon the symbol was fully drawn, glowing bright as it activated.

Frodo lept from his perch on the lockers towards his master, just as the tip of his tail suddenly started to stretch.

Wednesday closed her eye, raised her palm, and smacked it down on the glyph

There was a white flash, and the two of them vanished.

—-

The hallway shook, the walls themself seeming to tremble like the echoing warble of a beast screaming in anger and frustration. Like a coiled spring, the ground folded almost entirely in on itself before all the eldritch presence that gathered explode from the enclosed space.

And then the entire location snapped, like a bent stick snapping back into place. The creature was gone, along with any sign that it had touched the school at all.

—-

There was a sharp thud as the two of them hit the ground, their vision returning to reveal Wednesday's room above Saturday's shop. All of the walls were glowing brightly with arcane light, more symbols that Sazz may recognise as magic protection, from scrying, from incorporeal presences, from beings from beyond this plane. The defences matched Wednesday's usual neurotic preparedness.

The witch herself made no noise, save from the sound of her heavy breathing as she lay on the floor. Her one exposed eye stared up at the ceiling, unfocused, the exhaustion from the quick spell, from their escape, from encountering...that, it was all hitting her at once.

Sazz was already marking that as one of his most traumatic experiences. This was something Wednesday just sort of lived with, and some of her weirder quirks were starting to make sense. He looked over at Wednesday who was just exhausted from the whole ordeal. He had a lot of questions, but he knew better than to just grill her about it.

"Hells... you uh..." he rested a hand on her shoulder, but started looking around. Protection enchantments all over the place. This was just a magical fortress. He realized after looking around that he was in her room. "Huh, these were not the circumstances I was expecting to get me into a girl's room."

He laughed humorlessly, "You want me to like move you off the floor?"

The attempt at humour was currently lost on the poor girl.

She didn't even seem to acknowledge him for a long moment, shivering just a little against his hand. Eventually, slowly, she rose into a sitting position, her eye still unfocused as it stared off at a random spot on her glowing wall. When she spoke it was so quiet that he probably wouldn't have heard her speak if not for his inhuman senses.

"...It got Frodo..."

The silence only seemed to feel more oppressive without the felines usual soft purring in the background. Wednesday hugged herself, seeming to shrink a little next to him.

"I've...I've seen what it does to people when it gets them before, but I've never....felt it like that before."

She shuddered.

"I felt him die."

"Oh...hells.," he knew something was off because of her lack of responsiveness to his antics. He didn't even have time to guess why until she said it. There wasn't much he could do or say in the situation. Well, there was one thing, but it wasn't much. He pulled Wednesday into his arms, giving her a tight hug. She loved that cat like nothing else. He wasn't just some tool, he was her best friend.

He had a lot of questions, but this wasn't the time for any of that. "I'm here for you. You know that right?"

She stayed still for a long while, leaning a little into his warm embrace. She felt numb, her mind still reeling from the last vestiges of fear and terror and pain, every little sensation burned into her mind like a brand.

The next sound to come out of her was a small, muted sob, tears welling up in her eyes that began to flow freely. Explanations would have to wait, somewhere in the back of her mind she knew she owed him one. But she needed to let it out, the shock of what they just experienced, the terror from all the years passed, all of it.

She stayed like that, crying in his arms, letting the pain all out for as long as he'd let her.

Sazz held her, it was the least he could do for the moment. He stayed at her side for a long time, actually hesitant to leave when it started to get later. He could be a pain like that at times, but who knew, maybe she needed it. But eventually he said his goodbyes and headed out.

There was work to be done. Once he understood just what was happening he would make further plans from there.
