Adrian had expected to be scolded by Hah'en or at least recieve a comment about him being a uncultured thief or something of the sort. But nothing came except a simple eyebrow raise.

He picked up on her smile and returned it when she offered for him to try hers. He had definitely not expected that from her. It was a pleasant surprise that showed on his face.

"If you're offering I'm trying."

Adryan carefully leaned over with his fork making sure to include each part of the dish. He understood the meal was all parts and leaving out a sauce could drastically change the flavor.

He took the bite and savored it a moment with eyes closed before swallowing. Opening his hazel green eyes he looked back to Hah'en.

"Can we trade?"

His voice sounded serious, but the smile and his facial features gave away that he was joking.

Adryan clearly enjoyed the taste of Hah'en's dish, and she felt strange satisfaction at that. She swiftly and brutally crushed and made that feeling disappear, repeating to herself that it didn't matter whether or not Adryan enjoyed the dish. But when Adryan joked about trading dishes Hah'en couldn't help a small smile escaping.

"Certainly not, eat your own dish, scoundrel."
Hah'en retaliated and for dramatic effect pulled her own plate towards herself. Her expression was serious, but it was clear that she had understood that Adryan was just joking.
"And would not trade this dish for one that is clearly not on par with it, I follow the law of equivalent exchange."

"There! There! Did you see it!" Nux exclaimed inside Adryan's head. The thief shook his head, both dismissing Nux and in disbelief at what he had just seen. It was an actual smile from her, and not one that she tried to tuck away as soon as it came out.

"Is....is that a smile?"

Adryan assumed she did smile in situations. He had just not expected it while he was around. Hah'en always made an effort to beat back any semblance of being content and enjoying herself around him. It was just how their relationship went.

"Alright there alchemist, if you follow equivalent exchange, what did I receive after going through a window? I seem to recall not taking anything that night."

He sarcastically stabbed his lasagna and brought a bite up to his mouth where he made sure to make a show over how displeased he was with his previous statement.

The moment Adryan mentioned the smile it disappeared and Hah'en rolled her eyes, giving the man an unimpressed look.
"You must stop overreacting every time I smile. Or are you under the impression that I am completely void of emotion?"
Hah'en shook her head slightly as well and drank some of her water.

"The law only applies to actual exchanges, not petty thieves trying to rob me of my paycheck."
Hah'en said deadpan and stabbed her own food as well, eating a forkful but never taking her unimpressed eyes from Adryan.

No he knew better than to think she was completely devoid of any and all emotions. It was just always a nice sight to see when it showed up.

"No I don't think that, but I know you try to play that around me. You see me as a petty thief not worth your time and you hate the fact that you were wrong about that. That there might be more to me than you initially thought."

Adryan was going out on a limb as he spoke. He couldn't confirm some of what he said, but other evidence pointed in the direction. He then gave her a kind smile as his face seemed to soften a little bit.

"Besides, it's nice seeing you smile. Nice to know you are actually enjoying yourself."

After he spoke he quickly looked back down at his plate and fiddle with it before talking another bite. Adryan didn't want to see Hah'en's reaction as he expected it to be a chiding one.

Adryan yet again proved his perceptiveness, as he went on tamgent to try and guess the motivations behind her mannerisms and actions. But Adryan didn't know everything, he only got it partly right. Hah'en hummed quietly in thought, and let the silence stretch for a moment before answering.
"'Hate' is a powerful word. Against your belief, it seems, I am not incapable of admitting my mistakes. Yes, you are more than just a petty thief, like all people are more than what they seem. But I will make one thing clear; I do not 'play' anything when in your company."
Hah'en frowned slightly, because she detested that idea. That she would purposefully change the way she portrayed her personality for someone. Yes, sometimes she had to do it, like while working, and Hah'en hated it every time. So why would she do it with Adryan?

"I detest falsehoods and pretenses and I do not see why I should resort to them with you. I have not lied and have not 'played', not unless it has been absolutely necessary, ever since I made your acquaintance."
Since they had gone down this path of honesty Hah'en made sure to lay it all on the table. If their acquaintanceship was going to continue from now on it was necessary. Hah'en didn't feel entirely comfortable exposing her thoughts like this, but she showed none of her discomfort as she kept eating.
"And if you were truly not worth my time we both know I would not have any problem shaking you off, and would do it without a moment's hesitation."

"And that's where you confuse me."

Adryan's hazel green eyes looked back up from his plate to Hah'en. There was an internal struggle going on. He wanted to lash out at her, but it wasn't who he was, and he knew it would accomplish nothing. He also wanted to drop the subject and move on. The thief knew he would have to find some kind of happy middle ground in the situation.

"I know if you didn't enjoy my company, you wouldn't be here. You would make sure I never found you again. But when we are together like this, you fight back every little bit of evidence of you enjoying yourself. You start to smile, then stonewall. A surprised eyebrow at a comment, you look back to what you were doing. You state you hate falsehoods, but you cover up every time you seem to start enjoying yourself."

They were both seemingly laying it all out on the table. It was a good thing. It needed to happen. They could only continue playing this game for so long before it all came out anyways.

"Besides, your smile is gorgeous and I'd love to see more of it."

"Besides, your smile is gorg...."

Nux had been surprisingly silent. Adryan should have known he was up to something. When Nux did speak, it took his vessel by surprised and he naturally started to echo it before realizing what he was saying and cutting himself off.

Hah'en supposed Adryan had a point. She did show little signs that she enjoyed herself and when she did they were fleeting. Hah'en pondered this for a moment, paying no mind to Adryan cutting himself off at the end when he had started to say something about her smile.
"I suppose it would seem I am holding back my feelings."
Hah'en admitted, but then nailed Adryan with a serious look.
"But most of my demeanour is just my personality, Adryan. It's not a pretense. I am a withdrawn individual, I don't show much emotion. You may want me to smile more, to show more joy, but it is not that simple. Not to me. What you see is what you will get. You were the one who insisted upon remaining around me, you can leave just as freely."
Hah'en could gone on to explain why she was like she was, but that would've been too far too fast and there was no way Hah'en was going to explain her childhood or former career to Adryan. Even if they were in the midst of setting things straight.

Adryan locked gazes with her. Her look serious to a fault. He took in every word she said making sure he understood what she was telling him. Now was not the time to mistake what she said for something else.

"And I get that that's why you hardly show anything. But that's also why I will never stop overreacting to when you do smile. Your smile is finding that perfect skipping stone by a lake. You just have to stop and admire it before letting it loose again."

His own smile came to his lips before he took another bite of his lasagna, chewing completely and swallowing before speaking again.

"Besides. I'm too stubborn to leave."

And in the end it finally boiled down to Adryan overreacting to Hah'en's smiles, and how he was going to keep doing it. Hah'en put aside her momentary surprise at the sudden poetic nature of his words and just sighed, pushing some of her hair away from her face.
"Suit yourself, I am much too fatigued to keep arguing with you about it."
Hah'en basically admitted defeat, and ate another forkful of her food. It was depleting more and more by the minute.

"If you insist upon staying then at least do me the courtesy of trying to remain truthful. You now know my preferences, I am asking you to respect them."
Hah'en pointed at Adryan with her fork when she said it, a stern look in her eyes. She felt the need to ask this, because even if it was natural for Adryan to not be honest he should at least know that Hah'en was the exact opposite, and wished for Adryan to at least try and adjust. Because Hah'en and Adryan both knew that she had no reason and no intention to use anything she learned against Adryan unless he purposefully harmed or hindered her.
