Being alone had its disadvantages.

Adelene always trained in one corner of the sports field by herself, and had almost the same problem all the time. She had to set her equipment up by herself, tie them in tree branches which were too high for her height. She was short for her age, and she hated that her height caused her these problems. Somehow, Adelene wished she didn't have to be alone all the time.

Sighing, she set her large backpack down under a tree and brought out her equipments. She was going to go through her daily problem, and by now she's already learned that there was no point in complaining about it. She brought out three large but thin pieces of wood, attached to ropes for tying them on the tree. After that, she stood up, and eyed the lowest branches of the tree in front of her. "Thanks a lot, tree, you taught me how to climb. But really, can't you bend down a bit for me?"

...

"I'm talking to a tree."

She hung her head low, sighing once more. She shrugged. She decided to just go about her daily chore, and started to climb up the tree, with the ropes of the wooden targets hanging on her right hand. Once on a branch, she carefully tied them one by one, and then jumped off, creating a cloud of dust along with the loud thump her feet made.

She started stretching, and was eventually beginning her training by aiming her high kicks at the target boards.

Wei hummed to himself as he carried a bag over his shoulder towards the far side of the sports field, being careful to avoid the people who were training as part of an actual team activity. Though, they usually didn't care about him being in their field while they trained, some of them were huge jerks and ran him off the field if he didn't have the backing of a team captain.

He would join a team at some point. He was just too small. And young. And too simian, but that last one he considered to be some form of actual, literal prejudice.'

Once he reached the end of the field, he reached into his bag, pulling out a metal bat. The weight was a little awkward in his hands, probably because people his size weren't usually practicing with real, fully sized, metal bats. He swung it once, and felt his whole body protest.

"Whoa, okay... not like that." He adjusted himself a little, spread his legs a little wider, and swung with his whole body, from his toes to his hips, his shoulders and arms just following through on the motion. It felt good. Yes, that was definitely it!

Grinning, he set himself up in his starting stance, swinging again, getting that good feedback from his muscles. He repeated this again and again, grinning as he felt the swings get marginally easier.

He pulled back, felt his muscles coil, and unleashed another swing, more powerful than the others.

He felt the bat go flying out of his loosened grip, spinning wildly towards one of the corners of the field. Wei let out a worried screech, chasing after the spinning metal bird of sports and death.

That disturbing sound was enough a warning. Adelene turned around, just in time to see a metal bat flying her way. For a moment, she was simply there, standing in shock of what she was seeing. She had never trained her reflex, so not being able to react immediately was predictable. Fortunately, she moved just in time, jumping out of the way before the bat could hit her, hitting the tree trunk instead.

"What the hell..?" Adelene was back in the dust. She hated how every move seemed to cause dust clouds everywhere. She fixed herself, standing up straight and turning back to where the heavy material ended up. She gave it a hard, cold, and sharp stare.

Aside from the bat almost delivering her doom, she was bothered by the fact that somebody was training nearby. She did not mind, really. She wasn't doing anything dangerous anyway, but it would be troublesome if something happens. Like this one.

Sighing, she walked towards the bat, and picked it up, before looking around. "Whose is this??" she called aloud, waving the heavy metal in the air using her right hand. It was surprisingly easy for her. But that was because she's used heavier weapons...

Once he noticed that the bat was flying towards someone, he picked up his pace. He realized with bitter disdain that there would be no way that he would be able to get to the bat before the bat got to the girl who seemed to be doing some kind of training. This was bad, this was really bad! The last thing he wanted to be doing his hitting people with metal bats! He just wanted to train and get on the baseball team and play as the cleanup hitter, was that so wrong?

Panting, he ran until he was standing right in front of the girl, his tail twitching in nervous agitation.

"That's my bat," he said, bowing from the waist. "I was just trying to practice my swing... I hope you're not hurt."

He stayed in his bow for a few moments before straightening and looking at the target's she'd hung from the tree.

"What are you doing?"

Adelene watched as she spotted the stranger coming to her, before staring at the bat again, and then at her target boards, and then back at the stranger. "What am I doing, you ask? I'm training my combat skills."

She smiled and bent a little, holding her new acquaintance's hand as she handed him back his bat. "Here you go." And then she pulled away, putting her hands on her waist. It seemed like she needed a short break, and she did not mind staying put for a while if ever she needs to reassure this guy of anything. He seemed nervous. Well, who wouldn't be, when a metal bat goes flying somewhere? But there was nothing to worry about anymore.

"So... Are you okay? No worries, I didn't get hurt or anything. But the tree had to take some damage. That's a nice bat you have right there."

Training her combat skills? He thought they were allowed to train their combat skills outside of the combat classes? But he guessed that she was older than him (maybe a college student?) so maybe the rules were different when you were older and then people trusted you to not hurt themselves by training without supervision. Wei actually couldn't remember liking his training all that much when his brother taught him. But that's just because he was a perfectionist.

He smiled as he was given his bat back. He looked over it, checking to make sure it wasn't cracked or broken because he that meant that he would have to get rid of it. He couldn't swing around a broken bat--that would be dangerous for everyone involved. Wei let out a long, soothing exhale when she said that she wasn't hurt. Now that his worries were soothed, he placed the bat on his shoulder.

"Thanks! I bought it in the city!" He said, marveling at its newness and resilience against the blow from the tree. "I wanted to practice my swing, since the baseball team won't let me join since I'm small."

The monkey boy tilted his head.

"Why're you training here?"

Adelene smiled. "It's safe here. I've been training for weeks, and you're the first person who's gone here while I'm training," she answered.

She held out her hand, thinking that it was probably not so bad to do so. It probably wasn't so bad to meet new people. She was doing fine with training, after all, no threat of going berserk with her abilities or whatsoever.

"Anyway, my name's Adelene," she said. Her voice was calmer now that she's cooled down from the rush caused by the flying bat. Her hand in the air was steadily waiting to be taken for a shake. "You're a high school student, aren't you? I can help you train with your baseball stuff. I mean if you want me to. I could use some practice with my throwing, since it's a pretty handy skill. Especially once I'm okay with grenades."

Wei tilted his head at her hand before remembering. Oh right! People liked to shake hands as a method of introduction. He switched hands on his bat, freeing up one of his hands to shake her's.

"It's nice to meet you! I'm Wei HuSun." Adelene seemed very nice. Some people at this school were kinda mean. Well, not mean so much as anti-social... and she seemed to be okay with making friends. At least it was nice to see someone who was kind of like him when it came to making new friends.

He just gave an affirmative nod. "Yep! I'm a freshman!"

The little monkey's eyes sparkled at the idea that he would be able to have someone actually throwing for him, and he wouldn't just be shadow swinging. Yes, a hundred times yes!

"Okay! If you help me with my baseball practice, I'll help you with your training!"

Adelene nodded, her smile was gentle yet enthusiastic. "Wei," she uttered, just so she could feel how the name felt on her lips. More than anything, she was happy to have a new friend. And Wei was really interesting. He had already piqued her interest from the very first moment.

"My own training can wait," she pulled her hand away. And then, pointed to the bat, which was one more thing that caught her interest. "After this, you have to let me hold that again, okay?"

She took some more steps backward and started making throwing gestures. She seemed excited, with her grin and eagerness. It was a nice change to actually start training with other people, because being alone also meant having to deal with your own noisy thoughts. "So, that's gotta have a cool ball to go with it, right?"

The little monkey followed the length of her arm, to her finger, to the bat in his hands that she was pointing to. Apparently she wanted to hold the bat after she helped him polish his swing. Wei didn't see anything wrong with that; he trusted her not to break something like this. More than he trusted himself not to break his bat, actually. She looked responsible.

At least, to him she did, but everyone looked responsible to him.

"Oh, yeah! One second!" Dashing off to where he came from, he dragged a small bin of baseballs back to Adelene. They were in various states of usability--some were fresh and new with tight and well-kept stitching while others were frayed and very clearly falling apart. He picked out the newer ball and handed it to her.

"Okay! Whenever you're ready!"

He took a few steps back and held the bat in his hands. The monkey probably looked ridiculous holding the bat given his small stature, but he held it with ease.

Wei watched her closely, holding the bat behind his head in preparation to swing.
