Barty rested his hands on the back of his head, watching his cloudy breath in front of him in the dark night's sky. He was quiet for the moment, still riding the high of triumphing over his impromptu rival in their latest little bout.

That being said, he wasn't just walking with her to silently gloat. He'd been watching her while they were hanging out in the Community Centre, and his curiosity was eating at him.

"You're acting weird." He eventually stated, bluntly, less than a minute after they'd left the Community Centre. "What up with that?"

"The fuck? No I ain't." She shot back. She didn't realize that she was doing such a bad job of hiding it. She also knew she wouldn't get away with playing dumb on this, so she just sighed.
"You remember that tournament, right?"

He looked like he was gonna say something smug about being correct, but he kept it to himself, glancing over as he walked beside her.

"I think so? I wasn't there to watch, but I heard it got cancelled because some girl was going overboard. You were in it?"

"Yeah." She kicked a rock halfheartedly and sighed. "Got knocked out first round by that flashy chick. She made me look like an idiot."
She stuffed her hands into her pocket. "Happy? Can we just keep goin' now?"

"Ouch." He made a face at that. "That girl from the centre? Wouldn't have pegged her for a fighter. Though I guess you can never really tell in a place like this."

He glanced back towards the Centre briefly, before looking back up at the sky.

"You ain't usually the kind of gal to get this hung up on a loss." He observed. He hadn't exactly known her that long but given how intensely their little feud had been so far he felt confident saying that.

"It ain't about losing. I didn't get a single damn hit in." It was obvious she was getting frustrated about it just talking again.
"I mean, what the hell? Fighting's what I'm good at and she just..."

"Aw, c'mon, it can't have been that bad," Barty threw his arms out to the side as he said it. "If she's as tough as you make her sound no ones gonna think you're dumb for just losing a fight to her."

He jogged a few steps in front of her, before turning around to walk backwards so he could mostly face her.

"Like, I'm not much of a fighter but I've seen enough really tough guys get their shit rocked to know that it happens sometimes."

"You don't get it. She was screwing with me. She just kept getting out of the way, she didn't even try to hit back until I already lost my cool." She said, staring down at the ground instead of looking up to make eye contact with him.
"It's... it's fuckin' stupid, but I'm gonna tell you, okay?" She looked up, eyes locking with his. "But if you tell anybody I'll kill you. I wanted to make a big splash, y'know? My mom and me... we don't have a lot. For some reason I thought maybe if I impressed people, made some kinda big splash... I don't even know what I thought it would do, I just thought it'd make a difference.

Barty nodded quickly and quietly in agreement before letting her speak, willing to at least take this seriously. he rose an eyebrow and tilted his head once she finished, still keeping gazes locked.

"Like...what do you mean make a difference? A difference in what?"

"I don't know. It was stupid." She sighed again, tussling her hair in frustration. "Like, for some reason I thought if I impressed people that somehow it'd make things easier on my mom. Now I just look like a jackass."
