It was finally here. The opening night of Yoka's Yokoso Onsen and Ryokan.

After months of work and planning, a few disastrous tests, and a lovely weekend for a soft opening, the Hotel and Spa was finally open for business. To celebrate, Yoka was having something of an open house. The entire garden was decorated in paper lanterns and faerie lights. There were stations with fresh fruit, infused waters, and light fanfare.

Several people from the city took advantage of the shuttle service to arrive, and though the was a slight semblance of formality to the event in the quality and serving of the food and the music being played by a small classical group, the entire atmosphere was relaxed.

Yoka herself was dressed in a yukata with her hair pulled up in a braid that looked more elaborate than it actually was. Her feet were bare save for some ankle bracelets and rings on her toes. She was chatting with the people who came by to visit the location, explaining the services, offering tours and drinks, and the entire while she was letting herself enjoy this.

She was taking a break and went to grab another sparkling water when she noticed someone she hadn't spoken to yet.

"Enjoying yourself?" she asked the guest.

ooc: if you'd rather a different opening, feel free to have her talking to a random NPC or something if this doesn't work. Let me know and im happy to make any edits!

No Gaige here, unfortunately.
R sighed in frustration as her footsteps thumped through the foliage of the woods. Normally, she would be content to spend most of her time here, away from those humans. So territorial, those people. Always wanting to take what belonged to others. But, alas - if she wanted to stay inconspicuous (and on the island) for good, she had better to do. The bracelet on her hand weighed her barely-there conscience further down. The days of doing whatever she wanted, when she wanted - those were over. If she wanted to look like a good citizen/student/ whatever the hell she was supposed to be on the island, reputation was everything.
As she walked, R wracked her brain for places 'normal' people would go - a convenience store? A thrift shop, maybe? Never paid much attention to her own shopping. But then -
Oh.
It took her a second to comprehend what was in front of her. Instead of the usual trees and assorted foliage stood... a storefront? Tiny little faerie lights were strewn about and lanterns, with water and fanfare aplenty... R analyzed her surroundings. An open-house type of party, it seemed.
"Enjoying yourself?" asked a woman in a yukata in front of her.
For the sake of simplicity, she deicded to play along.
"Very much, thanks," in a casual tone. "The display is gorgeous."

“Thank you,” Yoka said. She didn’t recognize the person she was speaking to but that wasn’t exactly unexpected for Yoka. There were many people she knew by name, not appearances, and then there were many people whose appearance could change every afternoon. Plus, this event was open to all.

“The goal was relaxation and just being,” Yoka explained, motioning to the floating lights. “I am not sure how long you’ve been on the island, but I find it can be quite busy here sometimes. Busy isn’t quite the word I want, but perhaps you can understand what I mean. With such magic and wonder and excitement, I think it is easy to forget how beautiful just the simple things can be.”

With this, Yoka picked up one of the small plates from the table and popped a strawberry into her mouth. The fruit was as red as her lips.

She offered her hand out to the woman.

“I am called Yoka,” she introduced herself. “It is a pleasure to have you at my event.”

With a slight nod of her head and a demure look around, R maintained her facade of interest, glancing back at Yoka. This was normal for a college student.... right? Except Yoka was obviously much older than that. She probably knew the city like the back of her own hand, from the look the woman gave her - one that wasn't suspicious. The event was open

"Oh yes, I understand. The nerve of some people on this island will really annoy me, from time to time," she said casually, though she winced internally at the wording. "It's good that there're some things that do focus on relaxation. I find 'just being' to be a bit tougher, as it necessitates some type of sitting still," R laughed. "However you do have a point. I have only been on-island for a few months and I can already see how much the culture is the same to the other world's."

Rio watched as Yoka brought a strawberry to her lips, the color being vibrant, almost one with the strawberry. Such a beautiful color.... red.

"It's a pleasure to be here," she replied casually, taking Yoka's hand and giving it a demure shake. "I'm R. I would tell you my full name but then," R leaned in and whispered dramatically, "I'd have to kill you." A bout of laughter followed.

Though the wording was a little rough, Yoka laughed. She knew exactly what the young woman meant. She also found that she could relate very easily to the just being part.

"I'm not much one for sitting still myself," Yoka admitted. "Meditation is great, but so is dancing, or gardening, and I do not see why the two can't be combined."

She took another moment to steal a glance at the young woman. She was beautiful. lithe. mysterious. A name like R and a promise of death.

Yoka liked her.

She laughed again, the corners of her lips twitching upwards into an easy grin like a shark.

"I can assure you that I am quite hard to kill," Yoka said. She tapped her own head. "It's all my stubbornness. But no need to worry, R, i'm satisfied with something other than hot stuff to call you. You'd think on a magical island you wouldn't have to worry about cat calling, but it still exists, and sometimes from actual cats."

Since she said she had only been on the island for a few months, Yoka made a guess then, "Are you a student at the academy? Or just moving here for the atmosphere?"

She didn't meant that in a sarcastic way. Many people did come here to be at home with their abilities.

Sitting still, she figured. Necessary, but still irritating, which is why R was almost always seen moving, even a little bit. Never in complete stasis. "Mhmm," R commented, nodding. She seemed to be looking into the woman's eyes, but she was actually studying the woman's face. Her bright red lips. Her sort of elegance. And a coolness underneath that seemed to speak mystery insistently. The sharkiness of her grin, so sincere yet so dead-eyed. The lithe little laugh.

Hm. She could also be very useful. She seemed to have an elegance, a sharp sort of grace to her. Yoka, and a slight challenge.

Yes, she could see herself liking this woman.

"Well, to actually kill such an elegant shopowner would be a crime in more ways than one, if I can say." The words slipped from her lips easily, as did the smile that spread across her face. "Well, on this island anything is possible, hm? SO it isn't that hard to believe, if people can manipulate light or turn into creature beyond imagination. Although its much more normal at the Academy, mostly, though the classes certainly are different. I guess because of the diversity."A shrug. "I don't know if it's just the college, or more freedom, but I feel powerful in the Academy. Like I'm supposed to be." Another smile, as she leaned back her fingers tapping idly on the table behind her.

Yoka was surprised that she could relate so easily. She took a sip of her drink, which for all intents and purposes looked like and smelled like and even tasted like champagne, but was really just a cider. Yoka was not a big drinker, especially not on a night like tonight. It was a celebration, but she needed to stay alert. She was never certain who was watching.

"I felt that way when I came here," she agreed. "Admittedly, the outside world was a little bit different, then. There were different expectations on the roles and the place of a woman. But here? I could be whatever I wanted. I could own whatever I wanted. I didn't have to play pretend, to please anyone else...unless I wanted to."

She did have to agree about the classes. Yoka had finished a MA not too long ago. She'd been expecting more magic, more flash, more pizazz.

"There's a lot more paperwork than I anticipated, though," she admitted. She remembered what she needed to fill out to get someone to come and cast some high-level security spells for her. She regretted not going to law school instead.

"Do you have a direction or area of study in the academy?" Yoka asked. She was the kind of person to make snap judgement, to go on her gut feeling and re-evaluate later. But that didn't mean she wasn't up for collecting information.

R glanced at the flute of champagne the woman held in her hands, while talking to her. It was a welcome focus point - she hadn't really related to someone like this in a long time. Of course, that was happening more and more often, these days... Though, with how much she could relate, she took another glance at the champagne. Would someone as careful as Yoka really drink true champagne at an event?

Well, if it walked like a duck and quacked like a duck....

"You've been on the island for a long time then, I take it?" she asked, still idly tapping on the table. "I've wondered what regular, non-school life would be like here. Lord, only a few more years. It must be freeing, lively - certainly less restricted than a school life."

"Do you have a direction or area of study in the academy?"

Se was gathering information, R realized. About her. She must have made an impression. It never hurt to gather some information, then again. She replied with a nod and a sigh, like she had been studying all day. Which, if you counted the shadow-travelling, she had, in a way. "I study in the Magical Arts Department, with a focus in Stealth Magic." She shrugged. "It's been a tough area of study, but it's proving to be really interesting."

Yoka was quite comfortable talking about how long she'd been on the island and, well, the fact that she wasn't human. She knew many on the island still tended to pretend they were. Human forms were useful. They enabled her to get around in the world. For the students who intended to return home after their study, it made sense.

But for Yoka, this island was her home now.

"Yes, well over a hundred and fifty years, although I don't spend all my time here," Yoka explained. "I have properties in the states and a few in Europe, and I like to check on them from time to time."

As to what life was like living on the island...?

"Certainly less restrictive," she agreed. "I'm sure you'll get tired of hearing this from well-meaning folks, but..."

Yoka put on a serious face, like she was pretending to be an older, whiter man. "Those years will fly buy, kiddo."

Yoka rolled her eyes.

She couldn't hide the flash of interest in her amber eyes when the young woman mentioned stealth magic. She also caught the sigh, and Yoka had no reason to think it was anything other than the sigh of someone who was studying all day.

"That sounds considerably interesting," Yoka said, and indeed, the interest in her voice was undisguised. "What drew you to that area of study? This is my last school question, I promise."

She'd added the last part with a smile and another sip of her drink. Her long nails looked like claws on the glass. Yoka was a predator on the hunt.

Properties in Europe and the States.... Huh. Who would have known that a woman like this owned properties outside of this island - though, R caught herself, really, was it too much of surprise? She was almost ashamed of her profiling abilities. A woman like this, acting this way? Of course she'd have property elsewhere. From the look of it, she noted as well, this wasn't Yoka's first time owning, probably curating a business. Like she'd said, she'd lived here a very long time.
"Oh, understandably," replied the young woman offhandedly, silently glancing around, re-evaluating the scenery with the new perspective on just who Yoka might be. "It must kill you to not visit your property once in a while."
After all, property was yours, and usually yours alone, right?
Again R was subjected to Yoka's advice - to which she provided a playful-seeming wince. "Ah, I knew it. I knew I shouldn't have dominated the world at my age." Her attempt at a joke, as she leaned back onto the table, her gaze slipping back to the woman's lips - still the iconic red - as she rolled her eyes. R had to admit - this woman knew her profiling - or at least, how subtle she thought she was. She though she'd fooled her with the "sigh of a schoolgirl" act, but there was no hiding the spark in Yoka's eyes from R.
"It is," she agreed casually. "Learning about optical illusions and everything... It really does help. What draws me in? Well, let's just say - there's a little fun in the dark." A wink.
