Lochlann arched an eyebrow when she gasped. He gave her a slow smile and another gentle laugh.
“I don’t mean for this to come out the wrong the wrong way,†Lochlann started, “But you act like you’ve never had a friend before. I think it’s just hard to believe because you’re so much fun to be with.â€
He reached behind him and groped around for the picnic basket, searching for the strawberries. When he found it, he popped the top off and grabbed a handful to place on his stomach. He munched on one while offering the container up to her. Lochlann was quiet for a moment, content to enjoy the sun, the good company, and the strawberries.
“I don’t usually feel comfortable about people knowing my secret,†he said. “But….I don’t mind so much that you know. I feel like I can trust you.â€
He squinted and then said, “But I don’t think I’m going to go up a tree again for a little bit….â€
He took another strawberry.
“….at least not until we go looking for the hopoee.â€
