"Was this permanent? Oh my god, I'm going to be in such big trouble with the school." Marcus paced around the bench. What would they say to his parents? Was he going to get expelled?

Too many questions. What also worried him was Lochlanns' description. He tutored a Cannibal. Is human meat an actual cuisine on Manta Carlos? Did he accidentally eat it at some point?

Yes, there were many questions.

Lochlann exhaled and blew his bangs away from his face.

Since his surroundings were completely blank, Lochlann decided to make inventory of what he had. He stuck his hands into his pockets. The contents included:

wallet (1)
flask (1)
cigarettes (1 pack, 4 cigarettes remaining)
lighter (1)
phone (1); on 20% battery
receipt for library books
tramadol (2); 40 pills

Lochlann chewed on the inside of his cheek. He wondered if he had cell service.

Lochlann flipped open his phone. Marcus number was still saved in it. He typed a text message and hit sent, unsure if it would go through, but it was worth a try.

I just disappeared. Or I died. I'm not sure which one.
If you get this I'm probably not dead.
Or maybe my phone just works from the afterlife who the fuck knows.

His panicking state disturbed by the vibration of his pocket, Marcus looked at his phone.
1 message from Lochlann

He stood up straight, surprised by this information. Lochlann could still send messages! Quickly he sent one back.

You somehow appeared in the book. There's a picture of you, as well as some Text.
Marcus deleted this part, who would Lochlann react if he found out that Marcus knew about his cannibalistic tendencies? Best to just not mention it

Are you alright? At least we can still communicate.

Well, if messages could escape the book, then it was also possible that he could too.

Lochlann's phone buzzed and he pulled it out.

18% and one new message.

Okay, so, judging by the message he wasn't dead, and Marcus hadn't mentioned anything about Lochlann being missing for years or something, so he assumed time was still moving onward as normal. He was in the book then.

"Do you think it's safe to smoke in the book? " Lochlann texted back. "Also, My phone is dying."

Lochlann sat down on the paper ground. He was still trying to assess what he could do with his limited inventory. Maybe he'd ask Marcus if he should try to light his surroundings on fire. But that seemed pretty hard given that there was nothing there.

Smoking? I'm not sure. Marcus keyed into his phone. It shouldn't surprise him that Lochlann smoked. You could try it, I guess.

With Lochlann technically safe, he calmed down a bit. Though there was still the issue of getting him out, of course.

His mind drifted back to the book. At least he now knew why it was special. "Was it possible I could do it again?" Marcus asked himself.

In his head, he went over Lochlann's absorbance into the book. It began with the contact with the book, But it wasn't instantaneous. Maybe about ten seconds actually passed before it happened?

Unsure, He looked around for something he could try it on. Not too far away, he saw a trash can. That might have something, He thought. Pulling out a Soda bottle, he pushed it against an empty page. Fortunately, it went as expected, disappearing as an image faded into view on the page. One mystery down, he thought, happy that he figured it out.The ability could be useful one day.

Lochlann didn't immediately respond after getting Marcus's message, deciding to preserve his battery life while he could. Lochlann pulled out a cigarette, flicked the lighter over the edge, and lit up.

Everything seemed to be okay. He didn't seem to be dramatically running out of oxygen and there wasn't really a breeze, so smoking was pleasant. Lochlann exhaled and looked at the empty space around him.

"oh!" Lochlann said, looking as a soda bottle emerged into the book. It was empty.

Lochlann pulled out his phone and risked another text.

Are you sending me trash or is this where garbage goes to end up? because neither is good for my self-esteem right now, he wrote. He tried to find an emoticon to show that he was laughing and accidentally sent the fried shrimp.

Time elapsed: two minutes.

Sorry about that, I was testing something, and that was the first thing I found. Marcus responded, confused. Why the Shrimp?

As he sent the message, a few droplets of water landed on the screen, Causing him to look up, it was beginning to rain. Protecting the book, he began to make his way to some nearby shelter, leading him directly outside the Library.

How does it feel to be in the book? He sent off. He wasn't going to get him out anytime soon, it seemed. He needed to know more about this book first.

Lochlann laid on his back and exhaled the smoke up into the empty space above him. Lochlann chewed on the inside of his cheek. The next drag on the cigarette made the inside of his mouth feel scratchy.

He texted, 'Do you think you can send a phone charger in here or i might be sending you my last words very soon."

Although there was nothing to really plug it into. Lochlann glanced at his phone again as it went off and he considered.

"it's very empty," he texted. "It's sort of like when you're dreaming and your brain hasn't filled in all the pieces of the dream. Only less like the doctor's office and more...white I guess."

He could almost trick himself into thinking it was peaceful. Lochlann savored his cigarette in this space while he tried to figure it out. He had some magic as a fae but Lochlann had never, ever used it.

From his spot, Marcus watched the rainfall into the courtyard. It was soothing, sort of, so much that he almost didn't notice his phone vibrate.

Looking at the screen, he thought for a moment, then replied. I have a battery pack, but I'm not sure if the adapter will work. I'll send it either way.

For the second time, he was going to deliberately send something into the book. Taking the Battery pack out of his bag, he pushed it onto the page, and he watched it disappear. Did the Lochlann page change at all? Marcus thought, turning the page back to His double pages, unknowingly ripping the page of the soft drink bottle. The image had him smoking now, as compared to the static standing image from before. It must change as the person themselves change, He wondered.

Due to his ripping the page, the bottle reappeared in his dimension, falling from the height Marcus held it at earlier. However, it went unnoticed thanks to the rain.

The battery pack appeared a moment later much like the soda bottle did.

In a rare moment of athleticism, Lochlann caught it in one hand as it fell towards him. Sweet, he thought, and then, I can't tell if it's good or bad that no one saw that. Lochlann plugged his phone in and, thankfully, it worked.

"Thank you," he texted.

He took another exhale on his cigarette. He took a deep breath, then exhaled, then closed his eyes. Okay. He was doing pretty good so far. Normally, by now, Lochlann would have been panicking.

He popped another one of the tramadol, swirled it around the inside of his mouth, and then dry swallowed. Since he was alone, he took a rare moment to stretch out his bad leg and rub it.

He texted, "So I'm pretty calm right now but I guess now is a good time to let you know that I don't like feeling trapped. And this is kind of the definition of trapped. At least to the point where I'm completely dependent on you to get out of here which is why I'm not being a dick."

Lochlann had no choice but to trust Marcus.

he reached out for the bottle to at least kick something around and--

it was gone. Just gone.

Which meant....was he going to disappear next?

The panic started to set in.
