Regina almost smiled for a second. It was because of that sound Finch made - the birdlike cooing. Right now, she hated how endearing he was. Like a beloved character from a children's show, dispensing the moral of the story at the end of the episode, here was Finch: muppetlike body, cartoonish mannerisms, treating her like a child.

And Regina, who was too young to know her first birthday, hated being treated like a child.

"What, so he should know better, but I can't? Because I'm too young, for..." gritting her teeth, she grabbed aggressively at her pillow, almost attacking it. "Too young for anyone to even love me?"

She sat back against her bed's headrest, sulking.

Ah, and here he was, on unsafe and rocky ground. No one was going to look at Finch and think ah yes, he's attractive, let alone I want to sleep with him. It was a safe bet (and a sorry state of affairs) that Regina had infinitely more experience than he did.

"Having sex does not mean he loves you," Finch said, perhaps a shade more blunt than he probably should have been. "And if you equate the two, you'll only end up in trouble."

Regina was angry and confused. "I'm a demon of lust! I hatched knowing how this works. Like, I know rape happens, but we both agreed to do it, so that's love."

She spoke like this was the most obvious, basic thing in the world. And besides, how would he know!?

Is what she wanted to ask, all pointed and rhetorical and mean. But she didn't want to make more people hate her, and she probably would've just made a fool of herself anywat. Teratophilia was popular around here; she would be shocked if Finch didn't have romance in his life.

Finch let out a squawk, shaking his head back and forth. "No no," he said. "Just because you agreed doesn't make it love." He wasn't sure how she'd gotten that idea, but then he didn't exactly know what her whole... demon of lust thing entailed. Maybe they got a twisted around version of sex ed?

Who knew.

"Think of it like... holding hands," Finch said. "People who are dating hold hands. But holding hands doesn't mean you're dating someone. Just because you had to hold hands for a gym activity doesn't mean you're dating them."

He hoped simplifying it down would help things a bit.

Shit, she hadn't thought about it that way. Wasn't she supposed to just magically be an expert on this stuff?

Regina was getting the terrifying feeling that, maybe, she didn't actually understand these things, and she was wrong about all of it. Maybe people were right to try keeping her away from it.

"But this is different though," Regina protested. "It means something. People don't just do it for no reason. Right? " She was slowly curling back up into a ball, agitated and scared and confused.

She looked... nervous. She was shrinking back on herself, looking even more upset then she'd been when he first arrived. Back then she'd just been annoyed. Now she looked... Well, something else Finch was having a hard time putting into words.

"People do it because it's fun," Finch said. "And an enjoyable thing to do. But if you want it to mean something, you have to talk to the person first, and make sure it means the same things to the both of you. Aldo should have talked to you, but he didn't."

If he'd known what she was thinking, he might have said things differently, but as it was all he could do was make sure she wouldn't do the same thing over again.

"But we did talk! Just..." she trailed off.

The first time Regina had spoken to him was to berate him and swat at him, for killing one of her bees. In his defense, he thought he was protecting her at the time. She later decided that made it forgivable, and she got in touch online and apologized for being so hard on him.

Then they started talking about what she was, and what that meant to her, and how frustrating it was that nobody got it. But Aldo seemed to get it.

At no point did either of them say anything about what the sex would mean. She just thought it was implied. And she still wanted to think it was implied, because that meant she didn't have to reevaluate as much.

Regina wouldn't say anything else for a while. She was too busy fighting the idea that it meant so little to Aldo. That she meant so little. And it was pissing her off that Finch would imply that. Didn't he see that they loved each other?

"Just not about that," Finch finished. He wasn't even attempting to do the stern-parental-figure voice. No, he'd given up on that, his tone of voice back to normal with a note of concern.

He let her sit on the idea a little bit, and then, without prompting, got up off his chair, scooting over to the window to peek out it. No birds in the trees. Unfortunate, and he knew her bees wouldn't like the cold and the snow, so he left it closed before turning back to her.

"Do you have any friends who are ten or eleven, Regina?"

Ten or eleven? Did she really look that young? Or act that young?

Regina had been doing such a good job, of not letting herself think she was gross or weird or broken or stupid for acting the way she did, or wanting the things she wanted. She saw herself as pretty close to the age of consent around here, for all intents and purposes. She was used to thinking the school and everyone else just didn't get it.

The idea that she seemed 11, that she should be associating with people that young, just made her feel sick at herself. She felt like a kind of barrier had been broken inside of herself.

She managed to shake her head, as her answer to Finch's question. But mostly she just hid her face in her knees and started silently crying sweet, sticky tears like watered-down honey.

Finch didn't really know what she was thinking. What she was thinking wasn't what he'd meant at all, but the situation was awful enough as it was that he wasn't surprised when she curled a bit more and started to silently cry.

He could tell.

Well, more of he could guess.

"Most people would say you were fourteen or fifteen. If you had a lot of friends who were ten or eleven, they'd think that was strange. They'd think 'why are you hanging out with people so much younger than you'? People feel the same way about people like Aldo. He's old enough that he should have friends his age, and people would look at the two of you as friends and wonder 'why is he hanging out with someone so much younger?'. Not because it's bad to be young, but-"

Finch couldn't do it anymore. He let out a hacking cough, ruffling a bit as he tried to pull himself back together, clearing his throat several times before trying to continue.

"It's not bad to be young, but people stay with people of the same maturity as them. Being good friends with someone who's less mature than you gives you a leg up over them, and that can be bad."

Like it was with her and Aldo.
