Regina sniffed and took a few breaths, trying to calm herself down again. She seemed around 14 or 15 according to Finch, not 10 or 11. That was... Better?

But she already felt disgusted at herself, and realizing that she had misunderstood where Finch was going wasn't enough to help her. The damage was already done, she was already starting to take seriously her most painful thoughts about herself. She was already thinking about how she was literally less than a year old. How could she even call herself 14 or 15? But she couldn't exactly pass as a one-year-old either, so maybe she just didn't belong with anyone. Maybe the people she trusted the most, in that way she valued so much, were only taking advantage of her.

At least the strange noises Finch was making could distract her from these thoughts. Or at least for a few seconds. She was looking at Finch again, the whites of her eyes shot through with amber.

"You think I'm gross, don't you?" He probably did. That was probably what that noise meant. She hid her face in her knees again.

Finch cocked his head like a bird in response to her question, an action that would no doubt be immediately clear to anyone who'd ever so much as spent a few minutes watching any bird.

Curiosity.

"Gross?" Finch said, making another small squawk noise. "I do not understand the question. Why would I find you gross?"

He simply didn't get it, but at least he had the presence of mind to not just assume she meant physically. He could understand that much. People who looked different so often struggled, and bugs were rarely considered aesthetically appealing.

But then birds often were, and he'd lost that, hadn't he?

Regina couldn't tell if Finch was genuinely confused or just being polite.

"Because I keep letting people do stuff like that to me." Her voice cracked. "Like what Aldo did. You think I'm disgusting for having people do disgusting things to me." Even if Regina didn't really think it was disgusting, other people probably did. She knew that on some level.

It was becoming clearer to her as she thought on it more. That was her main way to get people to love her, and it didn't even make people love her, so therefore nobody loved her. Maybe she didn't even deserve love.

"I don't see why it's disgusting," Finch said after a moment of consideration. "It's unfortunate, because they do things without talking to you. But it isn't disgusting. It shouldn't be happening, but that doesn't mean it's disgusting. "

He'd said the word disgusting a lot, and he coughed, clearing his throat.

"If someone stabbed you, would you say that it was disgusting? Of course not! It would be silly to do so. What happened to you was bad, but it doesn't change who you are."

Regina wasn't convinced of what Finch was telling her. She had too many emotions about this, all conflicting with each other. She wasn't sure what to think, or how to feel.

But she appreciated Finch for saying it, all the same.

She wiped a few stray tears out of her eyes and leaned back again, looking at Finch.

After a while she would ask, sniffling a couple of times: "so if I'm not in trouble, why did you want to talk to me again?"

She was obviously upset, but he'd expected that, and he was perfectly fine with it. He wasn't crowding her or wiping her tears or anything like that. In his head, he was giving her space, keeping enough distance that she could be comfortable.

"To make sure you understood what happened," Finch said, bobbing his head as he spoke. "And to talk about it. And because you shouldn't be alone."

She was still young. They'd put Finch with many of the 'older' students, with Regina being one of the youngest on his floor, but they were still children to him.

"I still don't understand it, though."

There was a lot she didn't get about this, stuff she barely felt comfortable talking about with anyone. But most of the damage here was already done, she realized. Finch knew she was having sex with people. He knew that she was dumb, and bad, and that she didn't even understand the domain of her own sin.

It already couldn't get any worse. So why not talk about it?

"They told you how old I really am, right? Like, how long ago I hatched?"

Finch made a wobble with his hand to indicate sort of. His hand, unlike his head, looked entirely human. The hand of a small human male. A normal, human hand.

Once upon a time he'd pondered just wearing a bag over his head and calling it a day.

"A year? A bit less. You're very young, yes yes."

Regina sighed. She hated that people knew. Even if they were supposed to for their job.

"I hatched knowing about this stuff," she said. "And I knew I wanted to do it since, really early. But whenever I'd ask other people if they wanted to, they'd tell me stuff like, I shouldn't be asking 'cause I'm too young, and I'm not supposed to be like this. But what am I supposed to be like? How do they know? I'm probably not even supposed to be."

She shifted on her bed. "And before you say it, that wasn't a bee pun."

Finch had completely, absolutely missed the bee pun until she pointed it out. So he was straight faced (or as straight faced as one got in a mask) up until she mentioned it.

Then he let out a croaking laugh.

"You are you," Finch said. "Not anyone else. Even if you're eager to do things, you still must obey the laws. The laws say no, so you must follow them..."

There was another small, croaking laugh behind Finch's mask, but he didn't elaborate on it's reasoning.

"But you should find someone who you can talk to about it. Someone who knows that sort of thing." Aka, not him.
