Elias was not a talented wizard. That was no secret. He went to his Power Classes, he practiced, he did everything he was supposed to, but even then it felt like he was progressing at too slow of a pace. Still, he refused to stop trying. When an opportunity arose that could help him get better, he took it. When he found the flier advertising after-school tutoring, he grabbed it. And brought it home. And spent a few hours staring at it, trying to decide whether or not to go.

It was the perfect opportunity. The teacher himself was a telekinetic college professor. He would probably be able to give Elias some pointers and maybe even some one-on-one lessons. But that was the issue. Did Elias really want one-on-one lessons with a college professor? One-on-one lessons with a telekinetic who was far more skilled than he was? Elias was a runt compared to him (Compared to most people with powers, actually, but that wasn’t relevant.). Then again, if he would just bite the bullet and take the course, it could really help him improve. That was too tempting of an offer to pass up.

The next day after school, Elias made his way to where he was supposed to meet Mr. Fafnir, arriving outside of his office door. He clenched the flier in one hand, the other resting on the doorknob. After he opened this door, there would be no turning back. He took a deep breath and pushed it open. A swirling void stared back at him. Before he could even open his mouth to say anything, he was pulled forward and into the portal.

Maldrid's office was located in the middle of the mountains of Manta Carlos. It was in his lair that he chose to meet with his students and anyone wanting to meet with him about things related to the Academy. He enjoyed teaching and so he would often be here in his office so his students knew where he was when he wasn't lecturing. The portal he had set up in the Academy was to help solidify to people that he was an expert with trans-dimensional travel, even if this portal didn't lead away from this plane. Plus he liked how flashy it was.

At the moment he was looking through a mess of old tomes on the ground of his office. Many were opened and tossed lazily around the room. Old parchment manuscripts filled the spaces that the books didn't. Maldrid, himself, reflected the mess by leaning back casually against his desk with his bare feet in front of him. His students would be familiar with this and wouldn't consider it odd. It, however, didn't make for the best first impression, especially when he was eating his dinner at the same time.

This time his meal was fast food. Maldrid was so happy in the middle of the 1950's when they started becoming a thing. Pounding your food with lots of sugars, fats, and salts made for a delicious combo. The way his system worked made it all the more addicting. He was lucky that he was so active at the same time. Even with the portal, he liked flying to work. Since Manta Carlos had its fair share of magical creatures, no one thought of it. Maldrid did make sure to shift back into human form a distance away from the academy. He didn't want many people to that knew him to learn he was a dragon.

As he was taking a large bite from his hamburger, the portal in his office arced some electricity in a deceptively violent manner, letting him know someone was entering. Let's see who this is, shall we?

Elias stumbled out of the portal dizzily, promptly falling face-first onto the floor. He let out a groan as a bolt of pain and nausea shot through his body. Yet another travel method to add to the list of things that triggered his motion sickness. Luckily, he managed to refrain from releasing his lunch onto the floor, but the sudden portal-teleportation-whatever caught him off guard--Was this part mentioned in the flier?

Looking up slightly, he noticed a mess of books and papers strewn across the floor. There was also a desk, as well as a pair of feet...and there’s the teacher. Elias scrambled to get back on his own feet. Standing up straight, he met the teacher’s eyes. “N-nice to meet you, sir, I’m Elias and I’d like to be your student!” He put his hand against the nearest wall to steady himself. “I’m a telekinetic in high school and I’d be grateful if you could teach me your ways!” It wasn’t the introduction that Elias rehearsed, but it was good enough.

((OOC: So sorry this took me so long! :arnold:))

IC:
Maldrid blinked a few times at the newcomer. Just how often did this kid go through portals? Then again, Maldrid was a little eccentric and made the transition through it be disorienting on purpose. A normal portal was boring. However, the kid wanted to study under him, and Maldrid was all too happy to oblige.

"Great," he motioned the ground next to Elias, "Go ahead and sit."

Maldrid took another bite from his hamburger and scribbled a few things on a paper next to him as he did so. It made him look scholarly, but he wasn't really writing anything noteworthy. He had to keep up the appearance of a professor that was in control for his first impression. Even if his unkempt appearance and study didn't help. But darn it! there had to be a rhyme to the reason.

Maldrid kept eating and waited for Elias to regain his composure. He wasn't planning on having a high schooler come along, but this would be an excellent opportunity to try out an idea he had. One that had been festering in his mind for a long time. Maldrid hoped that this kid would be up for a little bit of excitement today. He also hoped that whoever this kid's parents were, that they'd be okay with it. Though, better to ask forgiveness than for permission if things didn't go the way he predicted.

((OOC: And you think your reply took you a long time?))

Elias practically collapsed onto the floor, letting out a loud breath of air. Oh sweet relief! He hardly even noticed the fact that he wasn’t offered a chair, but the ground. Everything was still slightly spinning. He was kind of confused.

As he waited for the professor to finish writing whatever it was that he was writing, Elias took another look around the office. There seemed to be no organizational method in place. The books thrown haphazardly across the floor and the fact that Mr. Fafnir was barefoot could verify this fact. Around the same time that he realized this, he also began to doubt his choice to come here. Mr. Fafnir was a college professor, though, he reminded himself. He had to be a professional. This office was messy, but that didn’t mean it was a reflection of the teacher’s character. Elias’s own bedroom was an absolute wreck, so he was in no position to judge.

Still, it didn’t help Elias feel any less uncomfortable, especially now that it was dead silent in the room. The only sound he could hear was the scraping of pen on paper and the muted munching of hamburgers. A sense of dread started to set in. Elias’s mind buzzed with ideas of what he would do wrong, or when he would mess up. Was he already messing up by staying silent? Now thinking he should say something, he started to panic even more. He didn’t want to say the wrong thing and give off the wrong impression, but as the monster of anxiety clawed at his brain he became increasingly more desperate trying to figure out something to say. His eyes flew to the closest object, one of the manuscripts on the ground.

“Wow, these are a lot of books. Are telekinesis—Wait, um—Are they...What, what are they...about?” Elias picked up one of the books while he was speaking and was now dangling it upside down. His arm was sticking out at a stiff angle, so he crossed his other arm over his stomach to look more casual.

Obviously now the poor lad was being intimidated with how Maldrid conducted himself. Crap! It's not working! he thought. Maldrid, a little annoyed at himself, wanted to calm the boy down. With a patient smile he said, "Relax a little, you're not auditioning for something. You were in the moment you asked."

He scratched his scalp and looked around at the study. "Well, these books span a lot of subjects. That one, though, is a book of love poetry written in French. It's really bad, borderline pornography." Maldrid chuckled as he gave a joking smile.

If he couldn't keep a scholarly "proper" college professor look, then he'd abandon that altogether. That didn't look to be helping Elias out at all. So he adopted his more casual, and more real, mannerisms. Besides, for what he had planned, there would need to be a lot of trust. Like, a lot a lot. It would be best to show Elias that he was trustworthy... ish.

"But telekinesis, huh?" He leaned back again. "I know a good bit about that, I was born with it. About how skilled are you with it now?"

“Oh, erhm…” Elias reddened, setting down the “borderline pornography” book of poetry. When he looked up at Mr. Fafnir again, the air around the professor had changed. He looked more casual, less professional. Elias didn’t know whether this was a good thing or a bad thing.

Finally, they moved onto the topic of telekinesis. Elias opened his mouth and closed it again. Standing in front of someone who was leagues ahead of him in skill, he was embarrassed by his lack of talent. Although, he did plan on improving by coming here. The teacher at least needed to gauge his current skill level.

“Not very,” Elias said slowly, “I’ve had it for a few years, and I think an instructor could help me get better.” To emphasize, he looked down at the poetry book. He furrowed his brow in concentration. The book...did nothing. He leaned closer. Still, the book wouldn't budge. Oh wait, the incantation, he remembered. It would be weird to just silently pull out a spellbook, he thought. "Oh wait, the incantation," he vocalized first. Then he reached into his back pocket only to find it empty. Oh no. An image came to mind of his spellbook sitting on his desk at home. Now how was he supposed to get a lesson? He needed to think of something, and quickly, before Mr. Fafnir noticed anything.

Under his breath, he muttered something that might have been the correct incantation. He went back to staring intensely at the book. He was about to give up when it began to shake. Then, it started to rise a few inches off the ground, swaying about unstably. “Oh, um, this is about all I can—eahhh!” Elias was interrupted when the book jerked to the side and hit him in the shoulder before falling to the ground. His face reddened again. "So...yeah." At least he got the incantation right.
