Cabel noticed the disappearing act she was doing and arched an eyebrow, but he didn’t say anything about it.

”I’ll wait outside,” Cabel said, and then he stepped outside of her apartment to wait. He didn’t care if she’d be a while, but he hoped she wouldn’t. Cabel had never been picky about relationships or sex. It was something he could have at any time, so he wasn’t used to having to give in to the other person. After all, if someone owed him money but couldn’t pay, and he happened to be horny…well…

He couldn’t explain his fascination with her.

Maybe it was because she was a unicorn. Maybe not. He couldn’t tell.

”Do you often turn invisible? Cabel asked through the door. ”I don’t mean to pry, that just seems like it’d be super handy. You could get into so many locker rooms after volleyball practices…….have you?

”I’ll wait outside.”

Oh thank god. It didn't seem like he was going to make a big deal about her vanishing into thin air in her apartment, and she watched as he left before throwing off her pajamas and going into her bedroom in just her underwear. She could just hear him from there, as she rummaged around her remaining clean garments and eased into a long high-waisted skirt and and a halter top. She turned in front of the mirror.

"Yes," she answered as she pulled out her ponytail and brushed her hair, carefully separating her black hair to one side, and her caramel hair to the other. She was so used to doing this that it only took her two passes to get her hair perfectly split. "There was one time I got hit with a soccer ball in the face and I was so embarrassed I ran into the locker rooms."

As she spoke she twisted her hair into two buns on opposite sides of her hair. "Except I had been so mortified that I'd run into the boy's locker room by accident. I was so stunned--I was too scared to try to leave because I thought I might accidentally bump into someone."

Her hair finished, she slid her feet into flats and grabbed her bag, her keys, and her wallet, opening the door. "I guess we should get some noodles then, huh? Lead the way."

"So it only happens when your embarrassed?" Cabel asked, curious. "I don't mean to embarrass you."

Really, Cabel was thinking about how much easier things would be if he had someone invisible to do deliveries for him. Admittedly, many of the more affluent businesses had security against multiple layers of magic, but Cabel had other ways of doing deliveries there.

Of course, he supposed he really shouldn't be mixing business with pleasure.

When she stepped out of the room, he checked her out and gave an approving smile, though it's not like she need his approval, he just felt like he wanted to give it to her.

"So tell me about yourself," Cabel said, chewing on the inside of his cheek."What sort of books do you read at the library?"

Aeon held her bag close to her side as she walked down the steps of her apartment and onto the sidewalk. She looked left and then right, as if trying to get her bearings, before ultimately turning right and walking towards downtown. So. This was how her first date ever was going to go. A boy she didn't know all that well more or less falling into her apartment and taking her to get noodles. Well. At least if things go south she had an assured way to spear him and run.

You could spear anyone with anything if you're determined enough. And if you have a long, sharp horn protruding from your head and the legs and power of a horse.

Nice.

"At the library I read a lot of books about flowers and plants," she said, looking around quickly to make sure she wasn't lost, which had happened the last time she tried to get to this ramen shop. "I'm a botany major, so... I really like reading about plants."

"A botony major?" Cabel asked, bounding after her like a puppy.

He was full of energy which would become apparent the moment they stopped walking and he was still tapping his foot, bouncing his knee, or fiddling with the phone in his hands.

He had the air of someone running solely on caffeine fumes and ambition which, admittedly, was Cabel's preferred breakfast.

"I have never met a botany major," Cabel confessed with the same embarrassed fervor as though he was telling her he'd never eaten dark chocolate or driven a car with a stick shift.

"What are your classes like?" Cabel asked her, jogging besides her even though they were walking. His guitar was still flung over his shoulders, hooked to his back like a backpack. "Do you do a lot of reading for all of them, or do you get to...plant things and stuff?"

Aeon watched quietly as Cabel bounced around as if he was a puppy. Every part of him seemed to be moving or jittering in some way, and it was odd. He seemed so cool and collected while he was in the tree strumming.... but now. He was like a puppy. It almost looked cute if... if his face wasn't covered in those shades.

Those fucking shades.

In all honesty, he looked like he'd sat down and had waaaaaay too many cups of coffee and maybe sat down to too many jelly filled donuts. Part of her wanted to sit him down and make him take a deep breath.

Deep, deep breaths now.

But the more pressing matter was if he was supposed to be drinking caffeine and eating sugar so soon after his concussion.

"Uh," she said, thinking. "A lot of classes are just talking about the different types of plants... and we also go to the greenhouses and tend to the plants...."

She paused, waiting for the cars to pass before crossing the street. "We also give plants to the alchemy program."

"Are there a lot of magical plants?" Cabel asked her. He bounded after her when she started to cross the street and he was still distracted trying to read the bumpersticker on a car that had passed, but he caught up quickly.

"And do you keep them in a seperate green house from the other plants? Are there any plants that grow in weird stuff? Do you know, in Polish mythology, there is a plan that only blooms in the midsummer and if you find it you will get....I don't know luck or marriage or a firebird or something. Is that plant real?"

He was asking ten billion questions and there was an expression of almost boyish wonder on his face as he asked.

That face faltered and became serious when she mentioned the alchemy program and now Cabel looked troubled.

"All of the plants?" he asked. "Or only the magical ones?"

He was asking so many questions! She honestly wasn't sure if he was asking because he was interested or if he had had much too much caffeine that morning and she had been the only person who he'd spoken to whose first instinct hadn't been to punch him and call the police.

That seemed rude.

But she supposed that she would answer his questions, mostly because it seemed rude to NOT answer his questions, but also because she had never seen someone take this much of an interest in her before. It was both engaging and unnerving in a strange... pleasing way.

She adjusted her bag on her shoulder before answering.

"All plants have some sort of magical property. It's just easier to use the magic in say, Moon Bells than a fern."

Aeon checked the street they were on. They just had to keep walking straight.

"We keep them all in the same greenhouse unless they need special growing conditions. There's some plant that can only be grown in the blood of the innocent. As for that polish flower, probably? I don't know if I've ever seen one."

Her eyes scanned the store fronts, but even she could sense the shift in his mood, though the cause of the sudden tone shift was really anyone's guess. "Uh.... all of them, unless they're dangerous." She replied softly. "Why?"

Cabel was pleased with her answers.

He nodded, his gaze so fixated on her while she spoke that it was amazing he didn't trip and fall over one of the cracks in the sidewalk as they walked.

"Do the magical properties change depending on when you grow them?" Cabel asked. "I always wondered if hensbane was stronger planted under a full or new moon, but it's hard to tell what's just old wives stories and what's real."

He shrugged and said, "My whole world view has been thrown off since coming to this island, you know?"

His shoulders fell just a little when she mentioned she wasn't sure about that Polish flower, but then perked back up. Maybe he would find one for her. He'd found a god damn unicorn by falling off a bookshelf, surely he could find an enchanted flower on an island full of unique things?

"I guess I never thought about where they came from," Cabel said. "I mean, it's possible to do alchemy in a pinch with cooking spices if you're desperate, but the results are shitty. The plants in the program are all pretty amazing, but they don't always allow us to have some of the more....exotic ingredients."

Cabel matched her strides by almost jogging to keep up with her. Though he was a little bit taller, Aeon's legs where longer and allowed her to cover more ground. The result was something like a corgi trying to keep up with a grey hound.

After a moment, Cabel decided he was going to ask. He couldn't tell if she was joking or not.

"Where do you get the blood of the innocent from?"

"Do the magical properties change depending on when you grow them?"

She thought about it for a long moment and nodded. "Yes. A lot of plants straight up won't grow unless planted on the full moon, or they wont bloom until the new moon."

Aeon looked up. For a moment she wasn't sure where they were. The unicorn spun in place once, twice, three times before she realized that they had to have just walked right past it because she was too interested in answering questions about plants. She could feel her legs vanishing. Thank goodness her skirt was long enough to hide that.

"Uh," she said, turning around back to the noodle shop. "Secret of the trade I'm afraid."

As they walked back, she was pleased to see they had only overshot by about a block.

"What about you, though? What do you study? You were in the plant section when you fell off... are you an Alchemy major? Or maybe Potion Making?"
