Running Into Bad People

It took just a bit for Vidi not to be affected by Caspian's stutter, and a little more not to suddenly be nervous for the reaction he'd gotten from her. It helped that the bright glow from her gloves distracted him that moment at the very least. The demon straightened up, allowing Caspian to take her hand back while he placed his own behind him to a stance he had yet to get used to.

Vidi tried to keep his expression neutral--an act he was more familiar with--as he waited for her to find her bearings. At her request, Vidi nodded politely, before taking the lead towards the entrance. For a moment, Vidi had to remind himself about how he should be more... erk, mannerly. He held the door open for her before following after then taking the lead to an empty table.

An employee would have appoached them as soon as they settled, handing them a little menu for the pair. Vidi would have let Caspian choose for herself for a moment -- if she even needed to, because he found her particular choice of drink was in there with a little more variety to pick from. His was already decided before he even got there but he would have let Caspian choose first.

Vidi had himself distracted, idly looking over the menu card that he would have barely noticed the runes on Caspian's gloves forming something coherent to read. He could still see the glow at the corner of his eye but chose not to prod for now. It was only after when he heard Caspian raise her voice did he let himself look up and meet her gaze.

The hellion seemed to stifle a laugh; she called it a bad joke, but Vidi wouldn't have disagreed anyway. "For one, you might was well call him that," he replied, clearing his throat to ease the laughter off. "He's more of a bodyguard, tutor, and also temporary advisor but everyone I'm pretty sure everyone's convinced he's my babysitter."

Before he could have said more, another staff approached them to take their order. He seemed not to show much of a reaction at Caspian's panic and he did the same at the waiter's evidently faked smile, choosing simply to stare back with apathy as he spoke. "The usual," he said as a challenge. He was sure they were a new wait staff; he would have recognized every by how frequent he'd been there. After seeing the baffled look on the waiter's face did Vidi only continue, his voice just as cold, "A latte macchiato, iced. That would be all."

The staff looked indignant at the response but said nothing after the complementary "Please wait for your orders to arrive." Vidi didn't even bat an eye as they left, only keeping his attention to the girl who sat across him. "Did you lose something?" he asked casually.

Vidi stared at her for a moment, for most people, the look he had was something people would think as a judging face. He was gauging the situation, in truth. A couple of month ago, that would have been a problem for him, now... well. In a way it still was, because he didn't really like the idea of taking advantage of the family.

"I don't see anything wrong with that," he blurted out, referring to having to pay for her. It wouldn't be a loss anyway. "I'll pay for the whole thing, it's fine," he shrugged, leaning forward to the table, right as their drinks arrived. Vidi nodded at them; a familiar face this time. Good. He didn't want to deal with the other one again.

"Don't sweat it; just think of it as my thanks," he said, sounding rather flippant than he should. Giving him an excuse of getting away from Razon earned its own reward, if Vidi were to be asked and god was he just happy to be out of his site for the moment. "We can look for your bag later; if someone found it, just hope they aren't trouble."

Vidi watched her gulp down her drink while he sipped his own, savoring the creamy sweetness of the macchiato for himself. That was, assuming he could given the... distraction. He tried not to laugh as he set down his cup. "I hear that a lot, but I've always been more of a latte person," he said.

Humming at the comment about the time, Vidi turned towards the cafe windows, taking note of the glare of the sun from outside. He wasn't the outdoor person, but the outdoor has been more appealing than the pressure they were giving him. Not that he had said anything about it verbally at all. His thoughts were distant for a moment until Caspian had spoken again, pulling him back to the present.

His lavender eyes looked back at her, eyeing her just quietly before speaking. "Mhm, not at all. You can get another glass of iced tea if you want," he offered, picking up his cup then taking another sip of his drink.

"While were at it, you wouldn't know why those men were after you, would you?"

Vidi quietly observed her as she spoke her piece, his eyes just glued to the glow that drew him in. He might have looked distracted by it if anything, but the way Vidi's attention worked was almost always unexpected. Absentmindedly, he turned his cup around, letting the sound of crushed ice tumbling together fill his ears.

"Not everyone likes talking about their sad lives," Vidi began, "On one side, we like poking fun at it to make us feel better about it. That's how some of us cope." There was no punchline. They were as honest as he could be. Nowadays, poking fun at his childhood was part of his escape.

"What you said is fine if you don't want to talk about it," the demon told the girl as he leaned back into his seat. "So what do you like talking about, then?"
