A pirate? Really? Pirates like that... well, didn't quite exist anymore. The golden age of piracy was long past, and the pirates of the modern age were little more than thugs, desperate for money. There was no glory in it, only desperation.

"Really?" He couldn't quite bring himself to believe it, but he took a moment to try and wrap his head around it. The island was weird. "I guess... I don't suppose you like... got lost in time or something and are from like, seventeen hundred or so?" Considering how bizarre the island was, it wasn't actually out of the question, even if it was mostly asked as a joke.

Grant chuckled. "No, no, a'course not." He waved a hand dismissively. "Late sixteen 'undreds." He corrected Nicolas, a grin on his face.

"I wasn' lost, per se. Stayed in th' same spot." The pirate shrugged, as if what he was saying wasn't that big of a deal. And to Grant, his displacement from time wasn't a huge deal anymore.

Almost dead on.

Oh.

Well, not quite the answer he was expecting, but he let his surprise turn into a smile. "Well, didn't think I was quite so dead on. Was mostly kidding, but I guess there are a lot of people running around the island who have stories that are just as weird, if not weirder than... uh, getting stuck in time."

"Names Nic, by the way." Better to get introductions out of the way early, now that he knew what kind of weirdness the captain was involved in.

Grant chuckled, giving a guilty shrug oto Nicolas. "True lad, that there are. This island attracts th' strangest o' folks."

The pirate smiled holding a hand out for Nicolas to shake. "Th' name's Cap'n Grant Mackenzie, friends call me Grant. A pleasure, Nic."

Grant was quite liking his new companion, this was a nice conversation.

It was so nonsensical, so bizarre. He had been brought to the island by a sea monster, and he'd met more and more bizarre people each day. The whole island was mad. "Like a magnet for the weird. I suppose. How'd that happen, anyway? The whole... losing time thing." Not that he was especially keen on immortality, but he wasn't going to pass it up if there was some easy answer. He doubted it was easy. It was probably some stupid 'it just happened' thing, just like almost every other thing on the island.

He liked Grant, although he wasn't quite as sold on his parrot.

Grant frowned for a split second at Nicolas' asking of how his...condition, but his grin replaced the frown nonetheless. Grant never did really like talking about why he still walked this planet.

"Now now lad, That information be in th' past. It wouldn' be right to dredge it up." Grant tried to diffuse the situation. He didn't particularly enjoy his curse, and he wouldn't wish it on anyone.

It wasn't like he could have known - the whole supernatural business wasn't something he was at all familiar with, and he was still stumbling his way through.

"Well, can't blame me for trying if there's a way to get easy immortality." He said with a shrug. "Although I'm starting to wonder just how many ordinary people there are on the island." He'd thought that maybe half were, but he was starting to suspect that the number was lower. Much, much lower.

So low he'd yet to meet anyone other than himself. Not everyone talked about what was weird about them, but it was extremely obvious when they were so familiar with things that it wasn't their first time hearing about the supernatural.

Grant frowned at how lightly his new companion was treating this subject. Immortality was nothing to joke about. Grant's visible eye took on a stony appearance, leveling with his new red-headed friend.

"Lad, I wouldn' be wishin' this curse upon me worst enemy." He said, not a trace of joking in the normal jovial pirates voice. "Though, there don' appear to be many normal people 'ere. Probably because of th' school."

Grant glanced up at the spires of the school in the distance.

Probably. He winced, looking a tad more serious. "Sorry. Like I said.." Or had he said? Didn't really matter. "Don't know much about all this supernatural stuff. Being immortal sounds neat to most people." Did the pirate even know that? Or was this place so far divorced from the real world that he didn't realize that people would go crazy for the chance to live forever?

"School probably brings them in I guess. Seems to make up a big chunk of the island." There seemed to be more students than non-students at times.

Grant frowned, crossing his arms. "Jess because they think it's 'Neat' doesn' mean that it's a good thing lad." Grant shook his head. Some people didn't understand the ramifications of immortality. It annoyed Grant, honestly.

"That be true, we be gettin' a large influx a' student's lately." He commented, shrugging. "New school year, an' all that."
