Cleo

Cleo nodded. "So, drafting just lets you pass people like that?" It seemed a little ridiculous to Cleo that simply by following close behind someone, you could essentially launch yourself forward past everyone. Sure, Ral had done it, but that was different.

She perked up at the mention of strategy. No doubt plenty of teams would be willing to take the plans of their competition, if only Cleo could somehow get her hands on them.

Turning her attention back to the race, she soon found herself glued to the TV. Finally there seemed to be a break in the action. "Alright, I have to ask, who are the top teams? Who wins the most?" Cleo asked, glancing towards the race, which seemed to be approaching the final laps.

Cris chuckled briefly at the comment. She constantly had to remind herself that Manta Carlos had a much wider range of personal experiences, a lot of which included magic and not technology or science.
"Well there is science behind it that explains it, but in short yes it can. But it does take skill to time correctly and stay that close to an opponent."
"So ASTRAL doesn't really have like a championship or anything of the sort. It is very loosely governed and races can show up anywhere. Each quadrant, planet, region, or however you wanted to divide it up has their own stars."
Cris finished off her drink and ordered another one, noting the rare break in action on the TV. Small breaks happened, especially approaching the end as teams began posturing to make final moves in the last lap.
"It is when those stars meet that the excitement builds. That excitement brings fans, fans bring money, money brings betting, and all of that together brings a bigger payout for the teams. Even that leads to bigger racers joining. As far as I'm aware, we, Manta Carlos and the Starlight Observation Station, only have one team currently based here. The team consists of Alyx, Kek, and their AI, Cambrissa-9. Very exciting team to watch."

Cleo nodded, a bit surprised and even a little disappointed there wasn't a championship or any greater reward than whatever they got for winning. And yet, that didn't make it any less exciting to watch.

"Mhmm, Kek was the one at the Grey Raven, correct?" She asked as she took another sip of her drink. Kek had been the one to tell her about betting on the races, and was part of the reason that Cleo even got into ASTRAL racing in the first place.

Casting a glance back towards the race, it seemed things were starting to pick up as they approached the finish. "Speaking of Alyx.." Cleo said, as Alyx appeared to be making a little run to try to win.

"No championship doesn't mean there aren't races that teams don't strive to win. The rules for ASTRAL just make it hard to come to an agreement on which race would be the championship or how people would qualify for it, what would be allowed on ships. It's all very homegrown."
When Cleo mention Kek, Cris hesitated and blinked a few times before snapping back to it. She had heard rumors of the team coming down to Manta Carlos. That would make meeting them much easier.
"You've....You've met them?"
Before an answer could be had the screen began moving quickly, lights and explosions riddled across it that drew Cris's attention back to it. As Cleo brought up, it appeared they were indeed making their move for the lead. Streaks of smoke flew out from their ship in all direction as missiles whizzed away and exploded all around them. It was far more than they had ever carried before.
Looking closely among the smoke and fireballs you could see a single ship moving deftly around wreckage at high speed being chased by several other ships seemingly trying to shoot them down until the ship containing Alyx, Kek and Cambrissa-9 emerged from a fireball unscaythed and crossed the finish line in first.
"They did it again."

Cleo

Cleo nodded when Cris asked if she'd met them. She was pretty sure Cris had met Kek as well, but she wasn't sure about the rest of the team. "Well.." Cleo began, before turning her attention back towards the race as it approached the end.

Suddenly the screen filled with explosions as Alyx, Kek, and Cambrissa came across the line to win. "Yes!" She cheered, before seeming to remember where she was. "I mean, good for them." She said taking a sip of her drink.

She raised an eyebrow when Cris said they did it again. "What do you mean, they did it again? Do they always pull ridiculous stunts like that to win?"

Seeing Cleo's excitement made Cris smile. The feeling was understandable. Seeing someone you knew succeed was exciting, but then throw in the excitment of ASTRAL racing and it was even more so.
Her mind was pulled to thinking about the team coming down to the island. Wait...was the Kek she met the Kek? How did that slip by her? This investigation was really taking a lot of her attention.
"Well a lot of time, yes. Alyx is a very flashy pilot, and their AI, Cambrissa-9, seems just as animated."
From what Cris had seen, the team did things very unorthodox, but that was what set them apart. The unpredictability gave them an edge do it was hard to find a pattern in what they would do.
"And now that you mention it, I actually think I have met Kek. I didn't realize that was Kek Volok."

Cleo

Cleo nodded as Cris said that Cambrissa and Alyx were flashy. Cambrissa she could definietly understand, given what she'd seen at SpaceCON. But seeing them actually racing was a whole different beast entirely. They almost seemed too over the top.

She raised an eyebrow when Cris mentioned meeting Kek. "Really? I would have thought it was obvious." she said, taking another sip of her drink. She hope it was like whisky, and tasted better after letting it sit for a while. It wasn't.

"So. Outside of watching Alyx pull wins out of nowhere, and drinking toxic waste, what else have you been up to?"

"I try not to make assumptions until I have more than a name. Being a detective has rubbed off on me."
Cris let a small laugh come out before focusing back on Cleo. The race was basically over as other races started to filter through. The excitement was pretty much over.
"Well, have been trying to take some advice and get out to 'loosen up' some. But work pretty much keeps me busy. Especially lately."
Cris had some investigations that had come up that she was either fully involved in or at least consulting on, and she had to be careful how much she divulged in a public setting.

Cleo

Cleo raised an eyebrow when Cris said she was a detective. "Oh really? Any big cases you happen to be working?"

Cris had been snooping around the Garner's, if Adryan was to be trusted. So Cleo has a suspicion she knew something about the recent vampire attacks. Something they didn't. And even if she didn't, any information Cleo could get regarding the workings of the police would be very valuable.

Cris chuckled a little bit. The vampire was used to people asking if she had a 'Big Case' or if she 'had a breakthrough' on something. She didn't mind, however, as people were more just interested and didn't really understand the day to day workings.
"There's always something going on on the island. Even if some farmer is just covering for some weird pet that they are worried will get taken."
She cleared her throat and took a more serious tone before continuing.
"That being said, I am not at liberty to discuss much for obvious reasons. Questions should be directed at out PR representative."
