Cleo

Sports bars were places Cleo tried to avoid whenever possible. She was perfectly happy in a regular bar, or even a club. To her, putting a bunch of rowdy sports fans in the same place, and giving them alcohol was just asking for trouble. And yet, here she was, watching one of the TV's which was showing the past weeks ASTRAL race.

Of course, this was the first race she watched, and happened to notice it by accident. So she was hopelessly lost as to what was even happening in the race. 'Alyx Assath' being the only name she even recognized. Letting out a loud sigh, she took a sip of her beer, before casting a look around to see if there was anyone who could explain what was even happening.

Eventually, she spotted a familiar wheelchair bound cop. She wasn't keen on asking Cris for help, but it seemed like her only option at this point. And maybe she get Cris to leak a little about her current investigation. "Cris!" Cleo called out as she made her way over towards her. "I didn't think I'd find you here, how have you been?"

rsz_8557290492bf86de.pngASTRAL races were a guilty pleasure of a certain MCPD detective. Unfortunately, not a lot of places showed them, deciding to show other, more popular on earth sports. This bar was the exception. Cris had managed to convince the owner to put the races on TV for her, and they had began to grow in popularity.
So one of her weekly stops was here to catch up on a few races. Ordering her usual heart apple cocktail, Cris was enthralled in the current race when she heard her name called out. Looking over, the detective saw a familiar face she hadn't seen for a bit.
"Oh Cleo. Yea I come here to watch the ASTRAL races. How have you been? Come to watch as well?"

Cleo chuckled when Cris asked if she was watching the races. Trying. Trying to watch the races would be more accurate. Truthfully, I haven't the faintest idea of what's even happening." She said, glancing towards the TV and letting out a sigh.. She knew there was no way she'd be able to make money from betting on ASTRAL races if she didn't know what was going on.

Suddenly a lightbulb went off in her head. "Actually, do you mind if I watch with you? Maybe you could even answer some of my questions."

Cris blinked a couple times as Cleo asked if she could join. She wasn't used to people actually wanting to be in her company, but it was only a moment before Cris nodded and motioned to the available chair.
"Please. I would enjoy that."
Cris moved over to the side slightly so Cleo could take the seat and still see the screen that had the race on. It was currently a planet based race. These were some of her favorites as they added an extra layer of intensity with gravity.
"I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about ASTRAL. I'm far from an expert, but I am a fan."
The detective almost seemed excited to share one of her hobbies with someone. Especially one that was just making its way to Manta Carlos. In fact, she even heard a team was trying to make the space station their base of operations. If she could only manage to meet them.

Cleo grinned as Cris gestured to the open seat next to her. "Perfect." She said, casting a glance back towards the half empty beer she was leaving behind as she took the open seat, and ordered whatever Cris happened to be drinking, she didn't think sports bars did cocktails, but at this point anything would be better then what she had been drinking.

After spending a few minutes watching the race, her drink finally arrived, and she took a sip. Almost immediately her face looked like She had bitten into something sour. It tasted weird, or at least it did to Cleo since she'd never had a blood apple before, let alone cider made with them.

"How.. How do you drink this?"

Cris raised an eyebrow as Cleo ordered the same drink that she had. When her reaction came, Cris covered her mouth with a hand and chuckled. It was apparent that Cleo had never experienced anything made with the special ingredient from her reaction.
"Well I am a vampire. Perhaps you would enjoy something like a Long Island Iced Tea. This bar doesn't specialize in cocktails, but they still do a few of the mainstays."
The detectives eyes were suddenly drawn back to the race as an explosion happened. She frowned a bit as she missed what happened but immediately gave a slight smile as the replay showed a ship launched missiles backwards as an opponent was passing to propel them forward more and remain in the lead.
"So what questions do you have?"

"Hmpf." Cleo huffed when Cris suggested she try a Long Island ice tea. Now, she was determined to finish it, no matter how bad it tasted.

She blinked when there was an explosion on the TV. Turning her attention back to the race she was surprised to find out that one of the ships had missiles that it was using to launch itself forwards. Or at least, that looked like the idea.

"Well frist of all, when did they get missiles? And why don't they shoot them at each other?"

Seeing Cleo not order another drink, Cris merely dismissed it. Everyone had their reasons for what they did. Maybe it was pride, or arrogance, or any number of other emotions that would drive someone to sit through something they didn't enjoy when an alternative was available.
"So, each ship is highly customized. HIGHLY. Most don't even resemble the original ship that it was built around. They are custom to the crew and how they fly. What you just saw was a clever play by both ships. The one, Vrolkuns is the pilot, was trying to pass the other, flown by Ral'Girt."
Cris paused a moment and took a sip of her drink. The pause allowed Cleo to sort out the names with the ships and what happened before continuing.
"Vrolkuns knew that Ral's rear missiles were fixed, or only had a certain firing angle, so they came in at a larger angle to avoid being hit. Ral, being as clever as he is, still used to the missile, but detonated it just behind the ship, using the explosion to accelerate and cut Vrolkuns off."
The tone of her voice seemed to get more excited as she explained what happened. It wasn't uncommon for crews to break out new strategies and equipment in a race, but a lot of them still had signature things they did and could be studied.
"It's almost like a high speed chess game."

"Huh." Cleo said as she listened intently to Cris explanation. "So Ral used it to launch himself forward.. And by keeping the missiles positioned at the rear, he can save them to be used as a boost if he needs them." Cleo said, thinking out loud. She was beginning to see why ASTRAL racing was so exciting.

Taking a small sip of her apple cider, she turned her attention back to the screen, only to find the screen had shifted, with the one ship tailgating the other, before suddenly darting to the side and slingshotting past them as well as the ship in front, taking the lead.

"That.. How could they possibly pull that off?" Cleo asked, trying to hide her excitement.

Cris looked back to the screen when Cleo did. Watching the scene unfold, Cris felt herself almost wanting to cheer. She made sure to hold it back as the rest of the pub didn't seem to be as into the race as she was. It was still being introduced and most didn't know what they were watching.
"That's part of what is so exciting about these races. This being planetside adds new dynamics that good pilots and teams take advantage of, such as being able to draft, which you can't do in a zero gravity environment."
Cris took a good sip of her drink and smiled a bit. She was enjoying actually having someone here to share in the thrill of one of her hobbies.
"The skill varies widely from team to team. Watching post race interviews is interesting as some teams don't give many secrets away, while others willingly give information out, knowing they are going to change strategy."
